Sorry if this has been asked or covered before. This is my first post, and a question I haven wondered.

Maul is a Sith by religion right? And also, do his tattoos and horns have to do with the Sith as well? Or are they just something he did?

I'm sure this has been asked before, like I said this is my first post. If this has been covered before, would someone be kind enough to give me a simple answer?

I'm not sure. I've always assumed that Maul was raised and trained as a Sith from birth by Sidious. As for his appearance, I think he's an alien of the same species as one of the Jedi Council members - it might be Eeth Koth, although I'm terrible with these names. I can't even remember the name of the species - it might be Iridonian. The horns are his natural alien anatomny, anyway, but as for his facial tattoos, I don't know if they're natural or not.

My friend and I were discussing this thory, although I'm sure it's not true, since the Sith have been gone for years. Is it possible that Maul is a Sith (species) and not just a religious member?

This is from the SW official site databank. It's under the EU section, but it's the best history you're going to get:

No one is quite sure how Darth Sidious came across his young and deadly apprentice. He was raised from an early age to be a weapon, tempered by harsh, abusive training to become an incredible warrior. Once a Zabrak from Iridonia, Maul abandoned all trace of his former identity when he took on his Sith name. So complete was his devotion that he even endured the agony of having intricate Sith tattoos applied to his entire body.

So he was an Iridonian Zabrak, but those tattoos are Sith designs.

Yes he is a true Sith, born and raised! Not like Dooku or Anakin...

But he isn't a Sith race. Oh well, Maul is still awesome.

And besides, we know also other Zabraks. Eeth Koth and Agen Kolar belong to the same species as Maul.

Maul is a Sith and now as for his Tattoos and his horns.
The Tattoos are Sith Tattoos. All Sith before him had Tattoos on thier foreheads. Maul on the other hand Tatooed his whole face.
As for his horns. They are a part of his race which are known as the Zabrak.

But do keep in mind that the Zabrak tattoo themselves...so it's not just Maul. Eeth Koth had facial tattoos, also. They just weren't as obvious (pencil thin). You can see them on head shots of Eeth Koth.

So while Maul's tattoos were of Sith design, tattooing is seemingly a tradition of the race/species.

Also, check out SW: Galaxies. IIRC, when they first described the Zabrak, they mentioned about everyone having tattoos (I think as a way to tell which race/group/family each were from, but it's been a looong time since I looked at the website myself).
