With Zaz's blessings, this is a thread to discuss the popular ABC series, Desperate Housewives.

The usual spoiler policy applies for discussions of new episodes.

So... who's ready to air some dirty laundry? :p

I had been meaning to do one of these for some time but I was hesitant after my Grey's Anatomy thread went over like a rock :p

I think the show's demographics and the board's demographics don't quite gell.

I do think its pretty good though. I always thought it was ballsy of them to make a TV series which is effecitvely just a drawn out dark comedy.

I did think it faltered a bit in its second season. We got a lot of answers but half of the fun of the series in the first place was the questions. I think they tried to offer up some new ones but no one was really interested. Season 3 looks like its off to a good start though. Bree's new beau alone raises plenty of questions least of which is his connection to Mike [face_thinking]

I was also surprised to see ol' "almost wolverine" Dougray Scott on the show.

I was rather bummed with the Third season primere. I really loved the first and second season, but the primere for the third seemed a bit weak...

That may have been because I forgot to add it to the index; which I will do ASAP...

Actually I'm pretty sure its already in there.

Like I said, I think it has more to do with the fact that, like DH, even though its an insainly popular, highly rated series its skews a bit older then the boards do. Like how we don't have any J.A.G. or Matlock threads ;)

    And I love Matlock! :p

Drawn out dark comedy? [face_thinking] I can see that in S1. But S2 with the Bree/George/Andrew and Gabrielle/baby plots were a little... unfunny.

Yeah I think thats kind of why I didn't really like season 2 that much.

Plus season 1 had the genualy interesting mystery of Mary Alice's suicide and they couldn't really follow it up with the mystery of the Applewoods. So it seemed like they kind of ended up rushing that whole thing and wrapping it up to move back to some of the dangling plots of Mary Alice. It could of been planned that way the whole time but thats kind of how it seemed to me.

Weezer? you start a JAG thread..and I'll be there every day.

I wanted to get into Desperate Housewives..cause it sure looked funny. I missed the pilot..and I am of the theory..you miss the pilot..you miss everything..that's also why I never got into CSI. I wanted to..but missed the first episode

Season 1 was brilliantly dark comedy. Very entertaining.

    Season 2......sucked.

I kinda fell off of the bandwagon after that. I watched the first half of the season 3 debut and just got...bored.

Show is entirely carried by Marcia Cross and Felicity Huffman. Whenever they try to focus on Eva Longoria or Teri Hatcher I lose interest fast because they just aren't anywhere NEAR the talents of Cross and Huffman.

I DO always like to see Kyle Machlachlan get work, though, and with Brenda Strong and Mike Ironside getting appearances, i'm convinced that someone involved is a STARSHIP TROOPERS fan, which i fully support.

Loved the season premiere, but maybe that's because I took a hiatus of the show after the first few episodes of S2. According to EW, the first epsiode may seem a bit weak because of the series creator wanting to 'clean' the show after the supposed S2 stinker. Hence the first episode's name: "Listen to the Rain on the Roof" and the running theme of 'cleaning' the dirty out. This Sunday's episode looks promising with wedding bells ringing....

I stopped caring when it forgot it was a satire, and I was only mildly interested before that. Felicity Huffman is good, though. :)

I was an on/off watcher of Season 1, but my mom eventually hooked me onto Season 2, so that's where most of my (very good) impressions of the show come from. I thought the Season 3 premeire had a lot of entertaining moments, although I'm really sick of Bree's storylines:

    1. Falls in love with crazy guy who murdered his last wife
    2. Someone comes a knockin' to tell her that she makes horribly stupid choices.

Go back to the mental hospital...

I have to agree that if S3 is about Bree repeating the same mistakes in S2, I will be a little turned off. It's unrealistic for a character that was as badly burnt as hers not to have learnt a few lessons.

I actually find Eva L's character Gabrielle entertaining. G and Carlos have good chemistry and an engaging, dynamic relationship. Her character went through the most realistic growth arc S1-3.

    Sunday bump. :)

So does anyone have any ideas on how we should manage the discussion? I'm inclined to do a discussion on past Seasons, particularly as I just got Seasons 1 & 2 last month. [face_dancing] So I was thinking of a discussion of each episode for a few days, until we meet up with the new Season.

Even my fiancee agrees that the Bree stuff has just gone way too far.

(I caught most of this past week's episode. My partner claims she just keeps watching the show hoping it'll get good again, but we spent the whole episode complaining about the unbelievability of Bree's situation after EVERYTHING she's been thru, as well as the lack of talent of Eva Longoria.)

I also agree that the Bree/psycho!boyfriend-fiance-husband story line is getting old!!!! *shudders* There's always a stretch of unbelievability when a character simply refuses to learn from her mistakes and grow. Personally, I would have preferred Bree and Karl to hook up and both characters to become more stable. Bree as a single character has had far too much drama surrounding her - the show always works best with one stable centre.

I don't think Eva Longoria is talent-less. That opinion, I'm afraid, is more based on prejudice against the fact that she's pretty. She's a very good comedic actress and she makes people care a lot for her character (Gabrielle). Only an accomplished actress can play the role of a woman cheating on her husband in one season and yet make us feel angry at said husband when he does the same to her in the next.

    *Sunday Bump*

The last episode was stupid. I think I only laughed about three times :( Susan's character is going down the tubes with the whole 'i found the perfect boyfriend BUT there's something wrong with him*. Also I'd like to see Edie's character do something other than steal other people's boyfriends (it looks like Mike's next).

See, this was the first time i'd actually laughed at anything in the show, this season. That bit with Lynette bribing the other team's 13 year old pitcher was kinda funny.

And Longoria isn't working for me. Still can't say i care about her. Still cant' say i've seen any talent. She's just annoying.

I agree that Edie needs to do something else other than go after Susan's lovers. I mean, she was supposed to have been over Mike since S1. What gives? Or is it revenge for Susan breaking up her and Karl? Wasn't the house-burning enough? ::shakes head::

Meanwhile, what do you think of Julie's new boyfriend?

Oh, it's definatley revenge. some people have trouble getting over things and hold grudges for what seems like forever.... Edie appears to be one of those lovely people. I actually am enjoying this season thus far, but am really annoyed with Susan. She was one of my favorites the first season, but is quickly becoming my least favorite. Oh well.

Susan was supposed to be the lead housewife for a long time but her stories were never as compelling as the others. I mean, Bree had her marriage, then crazy boyfriend/husband-killer, then aloholism, and Andrew. Lynette had her monsters and vampire, and stressed out life, while longing to go back to a job that she did better than her husband, then juggling between that job and the kids back home, then managing working in the same office with her husband. Gabrielle had her gardner, her husband in prison, the quest for the baby, her husband's infidelity...

What did Susan have? The idea of a true love? The quest for her father which turned into a 2 episode comedic storyline?

If he turns her into a bad girl, like Edie hinted, that would just be way too predictable. We don't need another Danielle; there are already too many emo teenagers on Wisteria Lane. [face_plain]

I would predict that Julie would turn him into a good guy but I have a bad feeling that the show won't go that way. A rumour I gleaned from television without pity about the show creators "messing" with Julie's character to make her more interesting.

Why does someone have to be bad to be interesting? :(
