    Hello everybody.

I enjoyed AotC, not as much as many here, but it was still a mostly enjoyable movie. There is one scene though, that I absolutely hate. The scene with Dex's diner.

First of all, this scene is rather useless and unneccassary. They could have just had Obi-Wan recognize the dart, or Yoda.

And it is obviously supposed to be like a diner from the 50s. This pulled me straight out of the gffa. I like to stay in the gffa while watching a SW movie. Not to mention that annoying droid with a jersey accent. :p

So, in short, I hate that scene. Anyone agree?

    No. Liked it.

It's an homage to American Graffiti.

    Nice.

Sorry you didn't like it. That was one of my favorite scenes in the film!
I thought Ewan did a great job here.
Anyone else think Dex sounded a little like Harry Carey ( former Chicago Cubs announcer)

Well, I guess some people are just more accepting of things not belonging in the gffa. I'm not, though. :p There was not a 50s decade in SW! So there should be no 50s diners! :p

Star Wars has always had that real-world element so that anyone and everyone could relate to it.

    YodaOfTheSith - I agree. It's awesome.

I wanna hear Dex's version of "Take me out to the Ballgame"!

To say that it was unnecessary is erroneous. I think we'll find that Dex gave Obi-Wan a lot more information than we realized.

I liked it, and the audiences in the theatres I've been to all seemed to react favourably.

The only thing I don't like is his name. Bad memories of a nickname I used to use. ;)

I liked it. It showed another side Of courascant and another side of Obi-Wan.

I thought Dex was cool, although I am struggling to picture him announcing a Cubs game.

"Holy Cow, Obi-Wan, that's a Kaminoan saber dart. Kaminoan spelled backwards would be...Naonimak. Hey, let's take a time out from the action to enjoy an ice cold Spaceweiser. Hoo boy!

Not only was it a great scene, but it also serves a purpose. If Obi-wan recognizes it, then he has no reason to check the archives, thus never knowing it was erased.

Did anyone else notice that Dex has a tattoo on one of his arms that looks something like an anchor?

I think that this is to help his credibility as an "informant". The anchor would imply that he was once a mariner/sailor and might have knowledge of far off places.

Sorry, I thought the scene was great too...one of Obi-Wan's best. It fits perfectly with Obi-Wan's gumshoe detective story line. He looked for the answers in the obvious place first and didn't get them. So, he went to one of his trusted sources, who has been around the block a time or two. And, like LordVT says, it leads to him finding out that Kamino was erased from the archives...thus, the plot thickens. Just more interesting, plain and simple.

Another element I like about it, is that it shows that Obi-Wan does gets out of the Temple now and then, and befriends some of the local people. It ads another layer to his character, that he's not just a stuffy Jedi. I like the thought of Obi-Wan, or any Jedi, hanging out with the locals and having a little bit of fun. They shouldn't have to be so serious all the time.

Finally, I don't see why it seems so far fetched to some that in a GFFA, filled with 10s of thousands of star systems, some elements of design, music, art, etc., could be much like(or exactly like 8-} ) our own. And, yes I noticed Dex's anchor tattoo! :)

I liked it too. :D I like it when the droid waitress says "Dex, someone to see you, Jedi by the looks of him!" My friend said he saw Sebulba in AotC. I said I saw a dug and on third viewing I am sure the dug you see in the Coruscant chase sequence is NOT Sebulba. I also noticed a dug in the diner, again, not Sebulba I am pretty sure. The diner is ace! I'd go in there for my lunch if I was Obi-Wan.

I would go just to hit on the hottie sitting by the door (over Dex's shoulder when he is at the table). What's not to like?

Ironically, Dex put in the second best acting performance after Obi Wan. He actually spoke with life and personality! I thought he was great.

    So was Sleazebaggano.

There was not a 50s decade in SW!

Oh, and 60s style kitchens are acceptable? (Lars homestead)

And Asian style costumes and Rennaissance and Baroque style buildings are? (Queen Amidala's gowns and Theed)

And kimono-like tunics are? (Jedi robes, Luke's tunic in ANH)

    Etc., etc.

Star Wars is inspired by real life. So you can attach to it and find it familiar.

And Dexter's Diner is cool! :D I really liked that scene - it showed a different part of Coruscant, and also a nice friendship between Obi-Wan and Dexter. Ewan did a great job acting that scene out. It was natural and flowing. Very nice. :)

I only bought one AOTC action figure and it's Dex. I hope he returns in Episode III!

I saw nothing wrong with Dex's diner. It was another unique and creative way for Obi-Wan to get information. It showed that they are not all-knowing. There are some regular everyday creatures and people who know more about certain topics than the Jedi and their Archives do.

Yeah, I might have left the scene with Shrek -- er, Dex -- on the editing floor.

Obviously, many disagree with me. To me, it seemed like Lucas was using a CG character for the sake of a CG character and doing a little homage to "Graffiti" for the sake of the homage, as opposed to a creating a scene that was really necessary to propel the story forward.

(Before people throw rotten tomatoes, let me say that I am and have always been a total Star Wars geek and that I *did* like AOTC. I just didn't think this scene was exactly "great storytelling".)

Loved it, one of my favorite from the film. Additionally, I thought that Ewan showed real acting chops during the scene, especially since he was probably all alone in front of a green screen.

They show instant rapport between one another and you could tell there was a great friendship there. They've kicked back a few and enjoyed a few adventures together in the past.

One thing I would have LOVED to have seen (heard) in the scene is if Dex would have called him Ben rather than Obi Wan. Would have been a great tie to ANH.
