Watching the PT and OT together made me wonder if Anakin's brutal defeat at the hands of Obi taught him humility?

Prior to his duel with Obi he is talking about "his Empire" and that he could "overthrow the Emperor", "don't make me kill you", etc. All of this makes for a very over confident and arrogant Anakin/Vader lusting for the top position in the galaxy.

In the OT Vader is an obedient lap dog to the Emperor and only in ESB when talking to Luke does he show any resemblance of the ROTS Vader that wants to be in the highest position of power.

Do you think that his loss gave him doubts about his ability to take on the Emperor? After losing Padme what did he still want to learn from Sids?

    Did Anakin learn humility?

Yup. He learned it good he did, no limbs left, and forever being the Gimp to Palpatine. Turned into a cripple at his prime by a lsess pwerfull teacher whom he always wanted to get the best of. Better yet years later when he strikes Kenobi down the joke was on him as he dissapeared, what a letdown that must of been to his evil sith ego. Hell, even when he finally destroys the sith he dies right away and isnt alive to enjoy all the glory and compliments of fullfilling his ultimate destiney.

Is it even possible for a Sith Lord to feel humility?
    I don't think so IMO.
Humility is a disposition to be humble; a lack of false pride.
Does that sound like Vader? lol

I don't think he learned humility until ROTJ. In ANH, he has admitted that he was arrogant to think that he was Obi-wan's superior. But after twenty years, he has gained the control needed to fight him. But he learns humility as well as compassion from Luke.

What about his saving Padme being the only reason for "needing" Sids and that reason was gone at the end of ROTS?

Also such a difference in his character from PT to OT... for the most part he seemed content being #2 and showed little desire to move into the #1 slot in the OT which was very different from the Vader we saw during the last 30 min or so of ROTS.

Quite simply, when he lost his limbs and became encased in a walking iron lung, he also lost much of his posturing when it came to the Emperor. After that he wasn't satisfied with being #2, but he could no longer take on the Emperor by himself. (heck, ESB was all about trying to use his own son to make him #1)

Even if succeeded in turning Luke and overthrew the Emperor, who do you think the new Sith Master will be? Luke! Vader would ironically end up being second to him anyways.

i doubt he learned humility until ROTJ.the only reason he was sidious lap dog is because he was too weak to overthrow him by himself,he had to wait until an oportunity (luke) came around, his aprenticeship to palpatine in the OT has nothing to do with humility but with weakness

vader would eventually end up dead or number 2 if he used luke to kill the emperor but by ESB he is still much stronger than luke so he could be emperor for a few months :p

Humility? Anakin Skywalker? I don't think so.
He wants to learn as much from Sidious as he can, so one day he can take over.
Vader only bends the knee in front of Palpatine because that is expected.

I don't think Sith believe in humility. They would see that as a weakness.

Humility after that fight, thats the wrong word, he was young and arrogant, He beat himself in that fight. He was not really a true Sith i don't think until, that suit was on, meaning i do not think Vader was crying after he killed jedis and rebels, the way Anakin did on Mustafar. I think more than anything he knows he just made a dumba$$ move by jumping legs first into a lightsaber. By ANH, Like darth sinister said he was ready to fight Kenobi, even though he was not as powerful, he was a true Sith and would not have made a mistake like he did before.

Humility? Nothing I saw indicates anything other than just pure hatred. Humility isn't what kept him alive according to the novels... again it was his hatred. And I concur that he didn't learn any until ROTJ. Even when he was subservient to Sids it was out of fear and his greed, or passion for power that kept him "loyal".

Anakin didn't learn his lesson on Mustafar. Even after discovering he broke Padme's heart and caused her death, Anakin's pride and hatred raged on. The only time he expressed any honest humility was at the end of ROTJ and even then it is ironic because he is telling Luke, "you were right about me - I am good" which doesn't come across very humble either.

Anakin is just a tragedy and it's painful to watch.

You won't give the guy an inch :_| . i don't really think at the end of his life when he was dying after sacrificing himself to save his son that he was being arrogant. all the rest i agree. but the guy was being sincere there. IMO.

I know he is being sincere, but I'm just laughing at the implications of his statement. Luke was always stating there was good in Vader, and Vader's final show of humility was him admitting he was good. It's just funny.

Im thinking the fact that Anakin says, "you were right about me." has just a little something to do with that it was the end of Star Wars, and Star Wars is the story of Anakin Skywalker, just a guess.

I often wonder if Luke would have thought differently had he know the whole truth of what his father really did.

But, again, I'm just pointing out some silly humor about Anakin making positive statements about himself at the end of it all. I know he was just reassuring Luke and commending Luke for his insight.

I realize we must accept that Anakin is completely reborn in the last 5 minutes of his life.

Better late than never. [face_laugh] Anakin is an admitted slow learner.

Luke was well aware that Vader killed alot of people, he almost killed him. If he knew Anakin turned to save his mother, i don't think it would have changed much.

Would it have changed much to know Anakin's turn killed his mother? Yeah. Information like that would have seriously laid doubts in Luke's mind about trying to convert Vader back to the light. But Luke was a little lost on the depth of what was happening. He thought he could take Vader home to Leia and be a happy family. Luke didn't really understand what "save" meant - Anakin had to explain it.

Anyway, Anakin was completely humiliated on Mustafar, but he wasn't actually humbled until his last breath on the DS2.

i mean that there saying even is Anakin's last breath he was being self centered but its the end, and Star Wars is the story of Anakin. And i agree ETC Anakin was not humbled on Mustafar he knew he did that to himself, and because of his dumba$$ move he would have to wear that suit.

Luke had compassion. Something that he inherited from his mother. Luke could look past everything that his father did and everything that he had ever been and forgive him for it. Even breaking his mother's heart and having an unintentional hand in her death, Luke would forgive him. Because he believes in the good man that he once was. The same goodness that he could feel when they were in each other's presence.

I agree with that and probably should have chosen different words for the thread.

It is interesting to see such a different Vader in the OT... more controlled, less ostentatious and a little less proud (well at least in the Emperors shadow)
