R2. (sorry hit the enter key :p )

In the final scenes of ANH, where Vader is shooting at Luke, did Anakin/Vader eventually realize that he was shooting at R2 and destroyed it, Padmes droid, the droid he customized ? He found out about Luke, did he find out about R2 ? Your thoughts about if it had any effect on him ? I think it might have.

He probably didn't pay much attention to it, as that part of his life was gone. Vader does not want to remember his past with Obi-Wan and on Tatooine, etc. He was more concerned about finding his son Luke.

I don't believe Vader knew he was chasing his own son in the trench. Even if he did know, he had no way of knowing R2-D2 was assigned to Luke.

Vader didn't care in the trench. In there, Luke was the pathetic Rebel who had to die. R2 was just a bonous. No more droid to help repair his ship.

Theres millions upon millions of R2 units in the galaxy. You wouldn't even know it was R2 unless looking at the serial plate or testing him out.

Plus, it's been a good 20 years since Anakin's life. He's too busy intrigued by Lukes use of the force and trying to stop him from blowing up the death star.

I don't believe Vader would make the connection. It's like asking if Vader knew R2-D2 was the one with the hidden plans stashed.

No, not at that time in the trench, but later. Vader did find out that Luke was the one who blew up the Deathstar. Interesting if Vader knew R2 was with him.

I don't think they'd go as far as finding out what droid he was using. They're common in space fighters, I think they were just more focused on finding out who did it.

How could he know R2 was with him? Even if he could, I doubt he would care about a droid.

Honestly, I doubt that Vader cares. He's sort of been turned into a cuddly teddy bear by the prequels, but if he doesn't care whether individual people live or die, a recurring theme throughout the OT, then why should he care whether a droid does?

I think if he did care enough to find out about the common R2 unit, then he would probably be interested. Heres his son, who he thought died with his wife 20 years ago, with the droid he modded and recieved as a gift from said dead wife 20 years ago. He'd want to know how Luke came across R2 and then when he finds out about 3po in ESB he'd be even more interested.

But Vader isn't going to waste his time to find out what droid he was using in his fighter, he's more occupied with finding Luke.

Are you sure R2 was a gift? I assumed Anakin/Vader just stole him, as he always does with droids in the PT. :p

Well as much as I hate to refer to any other source than the movies themselves, In clone wars Padme sends R2 to meet him at a landing pad after hearing about his knighthood. R2 plays a message from Padme, and r2 is put into Anakins starfighter.

Vader probably saw thousands upon thousands of astromech droids during his life time. He probably wouldn't have even remembered R2-D2 twenty years later. Unlike on our Earth, droids are a dime a dozen in the Galaxy Far Far Away. You wouldn't recognize your old microwave oven if you see it in a junk yard twenty years later. All the R2 units look the same anyway.
