Did anyone ever wonder why ewoks are little wookies?

I mean, what was going through Lucas' head.(WOK-E//E-WOK)

 

Cute and cuddly attracts kids and sells toys. But really, I don't know, but it's the best answer I can come up with.

 

Originally, it was conceived that Wookiees would be in Return of the Jedi. He decided to cut them in half and change the name.

No. Because they aren't . They come from different planets, live in different ecosystems, and are not in any way related to each other.

The ROTJ land battle was meant to be wookies vs. stormtroopers. Lucas wanted a technologically primitive culture to bring about the Empire's final defeat. By that time, however, wookies (through Chewbacca) had been established as a technologically advanced race- flying spaceships, shooting guns, smuggling. Therefore, GL made wookies smaller, with shorter hair, and called them ewoks.

 

There weren't ever supposed to be Wookies in Return of the Jedi.

Originally, ANH was to have a simultaneous Wookie ground battle going on during the Death Star attack, but Lucas had to jettison that idea due to lack of time and money. He had already come up with a great Wookie costume, so he made Han Solo's side-kick a Wookie just so he could use the costume in the film. In the original Wookie concept, the Wookies were a primitive tree-dwelling race, but when Lucas made Chewbacca a co-pilot, he established the Wookie species as being technically savvy.

When he got to ROTJ he had enough of a budget where he could go back to this idea for a Wookie ground battle, but he had to come up with a new race that could be considered primitive.

When you get right down to it, Ewoks are just smaller Wookies. To me, the idea that Ewoks are more marketable seems silly, since Lucas would have sold the same merchandise if they were Wookies, it's just that the toys would have been taller.
