Hello all, I'm new here and I hope I'm posting this thread in the right place, if not I'd be happy to move it to another forum. Onto the topic:

I've heard a rumor a couple times over the years that Carrie Fisher helped George Lucas with a quick, uncredited script polish before filming began on The Phantom Menace. Unfortunately I can't for the life of me recall where I read this, and it's driving me crazy. But there is a bit of evidence to suggest it might be true: starting in the early 90's Carrie Fisher started doing uncredited script polishes and re-writes, on such popular films as Sister Act and The Wedding Singer, among other films. It seems for a good portion of the 90's she was even getting fairly steady work as an uncredited script doctor. Carrie even did some official work for George Lucas in 1993, on his Indiana Jones Chronicles tv show, where she was credited for writing an episode of that series. Unfortunately I've done some digging and have not come up with any evidence to prove the rumor. I even recently read Michael Kaminski's insightful book The Secret History of Star Wars, hoping he might provide some insight, but there's no mention of her in regards to TPM.

Has anyone else ever heard this rumor of Carrie Fisher doing an uncredited script polish on Phantom Menace before? Or does anyone know for certain if it's true?

That was probably just another one of the billions upon billions of rumors when all we had was just the title of movie to speculate from.[face_plain]

She was certainly one of Lucas' friends who read it, along with Darabont and probably a few others. In the Omnibus BBC documentary before the release of the film she excitedly mentions "I've read it. And I can't wait to see it 'cos I know George does better than what's on the page, if thats possible."

I imagine Lucas showed it to her to get her thoughts, and knowing Fisher she probably wasn't shy in offering her opinions. Whether she actually went that bit further and formally helped him out with it in any way, I don't think anyone but those two would be able to confirm or deny.

Yup. The rumor--important distinction--that she helped has never been substantiated. She read it, but so did a lot of people. It doesn't mean they did a writing pass. Fisher is a script doctor, so everyone assumes that if she read it she must have done some work on it, which is a mistaken conclusion. Maybe she offered her thoughts on it at least--or maybe she didn't. Maybe she just said, "Good job, George, I can't wait to see it when it's put together." Or maybe she gave a couple of really obvious, shallow suggestions, and maybe Lucas completely ignored them. Who knows. Basically, this is pure speculation unless some specific evidence surfaces.
