I'm referring to the "no one could have survived that fall" line. Is he making excuses due to the possibility Obi-Wan is still alive, giving him a chance to escape? Or was it merely robotic Clone rationalisation?

The Clones were completely loyal to the republic and the Supreme Chanceller and nobody else. As far as a soft spot, as long as Obi-wan was perceived to be on the side on light, and useful on the battlefield, then yeah, they would have that soldier to soldier relationship.

But his loyalty to his chain of command meant that no matter what Obi-wan did he was instantly the enemy.

As far as the fall command, a soldier is simple, that was a massive fall, jedi or not he's dead.

he was sincerely interested in making sure he was dead...the Jedi were respected and revered as resilient warriors by the clones...oh and Cody didn't make that line : "no one could have survived that fall"...that was a subordinate clone that said that

Cody and Obi-Wan were definitely friends before Order 66. But Cody is the one that gives the order to "blast him", and I'm pretty sure Cody is also the one who asks "did you find Kenobi?" It's the clone trooper he says that to that responds, "sir, no one could have survived that fall". So it seems as though Cody is really still following his Order 66 directive here, and his men have been unable to find Kenobi and have made the assumption that he died. True, Cody does then tell them to start loading their men onto the ship, as opposed to continuing to look for Kenobi, but I don't think he's doing that out of any remaining friendly feelings for Kenobi.

However, it's always interesting to me that the blaster cannon misses Kenobi. Of course it could be simply that it missed, but I wonder sometimes if the clones responsible for taking that shot intended to miss him. They could even be the same ones who want to just call off the search for Kenobi later. And who knows, maybe Cody is with them on that, all on an unspoken understanding level.

in the ROTS novel it's stated that the creature Obi Wan is riding on absorbed the blast at the last second to protect the Jedi

^ Yes, and it struck me as kind of silly to think that Boga could realize what was happening in time and be able to somehow position herself to take the brunt of the shot like that.

well The novel does say that the Boga and Kenobi were joined in the force or that their bond was strong due to the force...Obi Wan refers to the creature as a "friend"

Eh, the ROTS novel makes it pretty clear that Obi-Wan and his iguana had some telepathy-type stuff going on. Don't find it that hard to believe that a Jedi master of Obi-Wan's calibre has lizard wi fi. :p

    Oh it wasn't Cody? d'oh
Anyway, I think you guys are right that he was just making sure Obi-Wan was dead.
    Thanks for your feedback.
On a similar note, what do you make of Sidious's line "The time has come"? How aware were the clones that killing all Jedi was a possible scenario. The way they respond is almost robotic.

    Order 66 information from Wookieepedia

The clones were definitely prepared that they might be called on to execute Order 66 in event of emergency regarding issues with the Jedi command.

As far as Cody and Obi-Wan, they were friends, but Cody was genetically modified to obey any order, so he shot the cannon anyway. The fact that the clones had befriended the Jedi, was one reason the clones were able to take the Jedi by surprise. The Jedi sensed no animosity from the clones before the clones fired on them, because there genuinely was no animosity. The clones were simply following orders.

That's how I saw it, too. Flick the light-switch, and Palpatine's little toy soldiers march to a different tune.

In typical fashion, the O66 page's stance on Palpatine's appearance conflicts with the one on the Palpatine page.
