Did Luke attempt suicide at Bespin?

This is in reference to the scene where Vader defeats Luke in combat, reveals to Luke that he is his father, and tries to convert him to the dark side.

Did Luke see far enough ahead to know he could escape Cloud City and be rescued? Or did he just get lucky while attempting suicide? When I originally saw the movies years ago I thought Luke was attempting suicide rather than be turned to the dark side by Vader, and just got luckly by having something break his fall beneath the city.

Was that a misconception on my part?

 

He was trying to kill himself. He rather had died than join the dark side.

 

Yeah that was most certainly a suicide attempt that went wrong.

 

Yea it's a miracle also Luke didn't pass out or even suffer sheer terror anxiety attack during the fall..knowing he was about to die.

 

They kept it ambigiuous as to how Luke survived the fall. Did he use the Force to make a last ditch effort to save himself, or did Vader sweep him into that vent?

I like to think that Luke intended to kill himself, and Vader saved him in the nick of time.

 

Damn never thought about that before, I guess ya he did try and kill himself. I mean what would you do in that situation?: Your father is 2nd in command of the most evil thing in the universe. Your family and friends (mainly Obi-Wan) lied about how your dad died. So that is a buzz kill....I would've tried to kill myself.

I guess when he was hanging for dear life on those antenna his plea for Obi-Wan and Leia was a last ditch effort. What a wuss!

 

I thought that he was sucked into the vent because it was a garbage shute... I don't think the Force saved him there, I think it's just a suction thing that pulled him in.

 

Wow, I never even thought about it one way or another. I guess I just thought he no longer cared what happened to himself and its like the Force's will pushed over to that hatch

 

I like to think he trusted in the Force to save him because he closes is eyes and acts as if he's about to meditate before dropping.

Ok,first off,here's what I would of done if I was in lukes place after Vader got done with his speech:

nah, I think Luke indeed try to kill himself....on thing that did make me laugh though, when Luke drops Vader still has his armed reached out, then he slowly lowers it as he watches Luke fall....even though you cannot see Darth Vader's face, he has that "Oh crap!" look on his face,um, I mean helmet mask thingy.

And I also believe Vader used the force to save Luke's sorry suicide butt.Vader obviously loves his son, as shown in Return Of The Jedi, so it is way within limits that he saves him! ^_^

 

I think that Vader somehow knew that Luke was going to survive the fall anyways. Also, I think it should've been somewhat obvious that Luke survives...because Lucas wouldn't show him falling, and falling, and falling, only to have him go *splat* at the end =P

 

Yeah I guess he did try but I was surprised that DV didn't try to go and get Luke himself. DV probably would have gotten to him first if he hadn't left.

 

I think he did attempt suicide. As others have said he'd've rather died than join the Dark Side. It's interesting that DV preferred not to go after Luke, he'd've found him hanging there easy enough. I wonder if that's the reason behind Luke's line in ROTJ about DV not being able to destroy him before, and thus not being able to kill him now. (Paraphrasing here, don't remember the exact quote, sorry.)
