Did Luke know Obi-Wan before ANH?

We all know that he must've indeed heard of him, judging from how he knows of ol' Ben Kenobi. But, had he met him beforehand? I always heard rumors and the like of how Obi-Wan might've saved him from things beforehand when he was little and such, but does anyone know for sure?

The answer is yes....they knew each other. Luke just didn't know at the time that Ben Kenobi was actually Obi-Wan Kenobi.

 

The very fact that Luke recognizes him right off the bat in the film ("Ben? Ben Kenobi? Boy am I glad to see you!") is proof enough that he knows him to SOME degree.

There is some EU that discusses it but I am not an expert.

I believe that most people in the area knew him as an old hermit who lived out in the wilderness.Luke and his friends probably saw him a couple of times a year when obi wan got some basic supplies from anchorhead. I read something once that obi wan resuces Luke and one of his friends when they got lost in a sandstorm and when he returned them to the farm owen went mental.

 

Of course he knows Ben Kenobi, but not as Obi-Wan. I believe it is like one of those Uncles or Cousins you meet as a little kid, but don't see him for 10-15 years, but the only way you really know of him is how your parents talk about him. For Uncle Owen, I'm sure he never said anything positive about that "crazy old wizard!"

 

They met briefly every so often.

 

They had to know each other. When R2 says he is the property of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke wonders if he is related to Ben. He says he doesn't know an Obi-Wan, but Ben lives beyond the Dune Sea. So that would lead me to believe that he does know Ben.
