Artoo has his lightsaber, so it's a good thing Jabba accepted his gift.

The answer is no. Luke knew Jabba wouldn't give up Solo anyway, so Luke used that for his reason to take Han. C-3PO and R-2D2 were used as a ploy and Luke wasn't presenting a serious offer to Jabba.

Really? Hmmm..... I thought that it was a serious offer, just simply that Luke probably had some way planned of getting them back if it worked.

I think it was all a plan. Remember in TESB he started using the Force to see the future. With his skills accelerating, he saw some of it and used them in his plan. 'Always in motion, the future is' says Master Yoda. Which explains why everything doesn't work out perfectly, but when he and Han are taken to the barge, everything else is "fine".

It was a setup. Artoo and Threepio were a McGuffin.

Why the ruse? Luke had no trouble incapacitating the guards and getting into the palace UNARMED. If he'd had his lightsaber with him couldn't he have just started the ass-kicking earlier? Are we supposed to believe any of Jabba's goons could have taken his lightsaber away? And wouldn't Jabba have assumed that someone coming in and presenting himself as a Jedi would have a lightsaber? Jabba doesn't find out that Luke DOESN'T have a lightsaber until Luke grabs the pistol.

Come to think of it, how was sending in Leia and Chewie supposed to help the plan? They just ended up being two more people for Luke to rescue. At least Lando successfully infiltrated the place, but couldn't Lando working from the inside and a lightsaber-armed Luke have done the job alone, then defrosted Han after the palace was cleaned out of bad guys?

Or did Luke think Leia would actually manage to sneak Han out of there non-violently. And if that worked, what about Chewie, Artoo, and Threepio?

A Jedi uses the force for knowledge and defence, never attack. Even though it was more than likely Jabba wouldn't be reasonable, Luke had to offer that option.

Had Jabba let Skywalker into the palace or sent one of the droids back to Luke with an invitation to negotiate, the events after the holographic message would never have taken place.

Mostly the droids even being in the Jabba sequence was just a plot device. Realistically, Luke would naver have sent in droids with sentimental value for fear of them being destroyed. TESB and ANH are much better when it comes to characters doing things in a logical chain of events. Then again, I would have relied on R2 to actually acomplish the mission and 3PO to be witless enough to pull off the illusion that everything was in order in Jabba's house.
