During the fight between Vader and Obiwan you see for a fraction of a second Kenobi looking at the stormtroopers that are guarding the Falcon and then they moved closer to the fight scene. I always believed that obiwan used a jedi mind trick on the stormtroppers so that they would leave their post... which helped Luke and the others escaped.
Do you guys think that Obiwan actually used some kind of mind trick on them ?

I never thought of that. Good observation! Let me see what the novel says.
    .........
It says that the stormtroopers were interseted in the lightsaber fight, and wanted a better view.

If I remember correctly (I'm too lazy to put my tape in and fast-forward to the spot), the stormtroopers starting running over first, then Obi-Wan glances over when he sees them. Most-likely, the stormtroopers happened to see that their head honcho was fighting someone and ran over to see what it was all about, and possibly provide assistance should anything get out of hand.

You should watch the tape again spacehunter24, we actually see Ben looking at those stormtroopers and then, their "leader" seems to take the decision to leave the falcon and get a closer look at the fight...

Okay, I checked it out. I'm not sure it was intentional to try to convey that Obi-Wan was doing anything like that, though. It looks like it was just a slight editing mistake, because we see Obi-Wan start to turn his head, see the leader motion for the others to "come on," then cut back to Obi-Wan turning his head again to look then back to Vader.

So if you want, I guess you could say it was Obi-Wan doing some kind of mind trick to get the Stormtroopers away from the Falcon, but I don't think that was the intention.

No mind trick....the very duel we are talking about is what Ben planned to use as his diversion.

I don't think he used a mind trick. He didn't need it.

hmmm.. very good observation, although i think if he had used a mind trick or the force in any way we would have been clued in.. perhaps he turned and looked at them cuz he saw them running over.. and the scene kinda plays out that we see him look over and go "hey what's he lookin at" .. then our question is answered when we see the stormtroopers run over... him using a mind trick is possible though... very interesting...

I doubt that Obi-Wan used a mind trick during that duel.

Take a look at Akira Kurosawa's "The Hidden Fortress". The Akizuki General fights the opposing Yamana general. What do the opposing soldiers under the command of the Yamana general do? They stand back and watch the fight. None get involved. It was just general versus general. Finally, The Akizuki general beats the Yamana general, even then, the Yamana soldiers leave the Akizuki general alone.

Some may argue that stormtroopers did not have values similar to Japanese feudal-era soldiers. Perhaps they had similar values! Don't forget that stormtroopers are also clones. George Lucas confirmed this. Perhaps as part of their conditioning, they are taught that if Vader is going one on one against a Jedi, all they do is block off the Jedi, but let Vader do the fighting and let him get the killing strike.

I always thought he was using a Mind Trick in that scene, which I felt was a nice subtle touch to things.

Ben couldn't have planned where the duel would happen- it was Vader who chose where to wait, so Ben couldn't have counted on the duel being a distraction.

So, when he sees the troopers are still blocking the Hero Trio from the Falcon, he throws a quick Mind Trick at the lead trooper, who starts his men over to watch the battle- Ben throws another glance either to double check, reinforce or trigger Han's "now's our chance, go!"

But if Ben meant his mind trick to be the diversion all along, why did he even need to duel Vader? He could have just walked into the docking bay, mind-tricked the stormies, and hopefully avoided Vader all together.

Ben needed to confront Vader! He had to "become more powerful then you can possibly imagine" to help Luke.

I don't think he could have avoided Vader, though that might have been his optimal hope for a best-case scenario. Once Vader showed up, Ben didn't have any choice- otherwise Vader might get Luke.

Perhaps Obi-Wan didn't perform the mind trick (he didn't need too) But I'm convinced he closed the door on Vader before he could help out his doomed stormies.

Hmm never noticed that before... interesting. Sure I'll go for the mind trick argument, WTF. It would make Obi look more powerful and with that Obi bashing thread goin' 'roud lets give em a hand for his efforts :)

"He could have just walked into the docking bay, mind-tricked the stormies, and hopefully avoided Vader all together."

"Ben needed to confront Vader! He had to "become more powerful then you can possibly imagine" to help Luke."

Incorrect. Lucas killed off Ben's character because he did nothing else for the rest of the original script. Plus, it was a great way to provide drama about the stakes involved, and motivation for Luke's character.

Because ANH was so popular, Lucas had to create another Jedi Master to train Luke, and thus Yoda was "born".

"Once Vader showed up, Ben didn't have any choice- otherwise Vader might get Luke."

Ben's only other choice was to kill Anakin - the "Chosen One". Obviously, this couldn't happen because it was Luke's destiny. Therefore, once he saw Luke was safe, Ben sacrificed himself so that Luke could get away (and so he, himself, wouldn't be taken prisoner.)

"But I'm convinced he closed the door on Vader before he could help out his doomed stormies."

Ben doesn't have any power that close to Vader, and it was Luke's shot that closed the doors.

Luke's shot? I don't remember this. How could his lazer shut the door? Me thinks Obi had somethin to do with it.

Ben doesn't have any power that close to Vader, and it was Luke's shot that closed the doors.

"if you strike me down, I'll become more powerful than you could possibly imagine"

Ben has way more power than Vader. Escape was not his plan and Vader fell right into his trap. Vader is a pon, while Obi guides events in the galaxy from his grave. I didn't see Vader doing any of that......

Well Luke really shot the door down after Han proposed im to.

Regarding as to wheter Obiwan used a mind trick as a diversion on the stormtroopers, hopefully Lucas will provide details and comments on that on the upcomming DVD verion of ep.4

"Luke's shot? I don't remember this. How could his lazer shut the door? Me thinks Obi had somethin to do with it."

" Well Luke really shot the door down after Han proposed im to. "

Specifically, Luke shot the controls to the door, after Han told him to. Whether this makes sense to you or not, it is in the film.

Kenobi has no power around Vader or the Emperor. - "If you go, you must face him alone. I cannot help you."

(I have a great theory to explain this, also :D )

"if you strike me down, I'll become more powerful than you could possibly imagine"

"Ben has way more power than Vader. "

As I wrote in If you strike me down I shall become more powerful then you can possibly imagine what was Obiwan

Kenobi did become more powerful than Vader could possibly realize, because Kenobi could come back from the dead.

That's pretty powerful, if you ask me. [happy.gif]

Then again, too many people confuse "power" with fighting. In that respect, Palpatine was not very "powerful", since the only person he fights is Luke (and he waited until Luke tossed the lightsaber.) [wink.gif]

This goes along with my theory that Vader was actually more powerful than Palpatine.

I agree with you that Obiwan became more powerful when he "became one with the force" but that didn't do no good to anyone...guiding Luke to Yoda ? well he could simply had told him !

so what's the use of being a force ghost ??
My though was that Ben gave part of his force power to Luke when he died but nobody seems to agree with that.

Obiwan was able to console Luke on Dagobah with out drawing imperial attention because he was a ghost. He knew that he couldn't do much any more as an old man.

"im getting to old for this sorta thing"

What would Ben do besides attract attention? Nothing, he was extremely helpful as a ghost though.

Plus, don't you think its better that Yoda trained Luke in person? If Obi had trained him there could have been complications as with his training of Anakin. Thats just speculation though.....

Kenobi was there "for knowledge and defense." He aided Luke, and sent him to Yoda to be trained.

Otherwise, Luke would never have used the Force, or found Yoda.
