the blockade in Naboo and go to Coruscant?

I doubt he did, because why would he put her in so much danger if he wanted her to leave to Coruscant?

But, then I wonder, if he wanted her to stay in Naboo, then how would he have become Supreme Chancellor? How would her signing that treaty get him into power?

    anyone?

He did not care either way.
Perhaps he meant it to happen.
He knew the Federation would be forced off Naboo.
So he knew something like that was coming.
It did not matter for him, he was already Chancellor.

Palpatine planned for Amidala to somehow get a word to him to plead to the Senate, although I doubt he cared how.

I think Palaptine didn't expect her to escape, but wanted her to sign the treaty, and he would be able to point to her being held captive to the senate as leverage for his "sympathy vote". The fact she escaped and arrived on Coruscant was actually an unexpected boon to Palpatine, cause he realized he could manipulate her into calling for Valorum to be replaced, and not have to do it himself, or sway some other senator to do it for him. And it added even more to any sympathy vote Palpatine would have gotten.

I think Palpatine didn't care whether or not Padmé signed the treaty and that it benefitted him for her to be on Coruscant, because she moved for the vote of no confidence.

If the treaty had been signed it would possibly have caused Palpatine harm because the invasion of the Federation would have been legal, and there might not have been a sympathy vote for him.

Also the Trade Federation wants the treaty signed more than Palpatine... Palpatine used the Federation to invade Naboo in order to create the sympathy vote. Which is why in AotC you hear Dooku tell Obi-Wan that the Emperor betrayed the Vice-Roy.

With all due respect, I beg to differ. If Amidalla were forced to sign the treaty, the senate is smart enough to know that she was coerced into doing it. Though legally they could not do anything about it, they could make Palpatine... a respected member of the senate, and now out of power..... chancelor. Who better to reign in the Trade Federation?

Just a thought. but really it could have gone any way and Palpatine would still become chancelor because he has clarevoyance in these dark times.

No, I believe Amidala escaping was not in Sidious's initial plans, but it worked out to his benefit. In her escaping and coming to Courscant, he was able to manipulate her into placing a vote of no confidence in Chancellor Valorum, and in turn, play the sympathy vote angle to be voted the new chancellor.

i think that if Padme didn't come, he would've placed the vote of no confidence himself, or waited til Valorum's term was up, and run for Chancellor.

I don't believe he would have went ahead and placed the vote of no confidence himself. As we know, he never does anything that places himself in bad light. By him doing this it would have brought too much attention on himself.

it is palpatine who wants the treaty signed, not the TF. this serves 2 purposes:

    1. its proof that the TF has occupation of naboo. palpatine can use this to gain the sympathy vote from the senators that he doesnt already have influence over.

    2. the confederacy of independent systems starts with naboo and the trade federation. because of the treaty, naboo will legally be controlled by the TF and can be forced to secede from the republic.

of course, things didnt go exactly as planned. but then palps is a pretty resourceful guy.

I think the original plan was to allow some knowledge of the invasion to reach Coruscant, but when Amidala escaped and showed up on Palpatine's door...he used this turn of events to his advantage. He now had a "face" to use to draw in the sympathy vote for Supereme Chancellor. Discrediting Valorum may have been "plan B" or "plan C" or plan "W"...who knows what lengths someone will go to get elected.

I can't really say much since I don't think Sidious and Palpatine are one in the same. But I'll say this, I don't think Sidious wanted Padme to escape since he knew Palpatine's plan so he tried to kill her off in which he failed. So Palpatine became Chancellor and now Sidious had to go for something different: The Clone Army and he used his real name, Sifo-Dyas, to order them.

Palpatines plan was to secure the office of Supreme Chancellor by sympathy vote if Amidala signs a treaty on Naboo or escapes to Coruscant and votes no confidence. This is achieved in the first half of the story. Then can anyone answer these questions?

    1. Why does Palpatine care if Amidala goes back to Naboo?

    2. Why does Sidious warn the TF of her return to Naboo.

    3. Why does Sidious still insist on a treaty being signed when he has already secured office.

    4. Why does he send Mual to Naboo, this makes no sense.

I'm pretty sure he didn't mean for Amidala to escape, but he turned it to his advantage.

He didn't know what else Amidala and the Jedi might do, and he did want Naboo under the control of the Trade Federation, so he sent Maul to help out the TF. That didn't work, but it was the minor part of his plan - the main part had already worked.

I don't think he meant for her to essape either. He wouldn't have sent Maul had he meant for her to. No, he had a different plan. I suspect his original plan would have allowed him to move things much faster. Because of the outcome of TPM, sure, he was able to take over the galaxy, but he had to wait over ten years to do so. I suspect he had a faster plan in mind.

He really doesn't care. I've always thought if you watch the scene in Palp private chambers with Amidala very closely, at the end when Padme leaves you can see his frown/look of dispair slowly melt into a slight grin. Whatever eventually happens to Padme only will reinforce his standing in the senate by garnering sympathy over any losses on his own planet.

At the point he becomes chancellor, he still has to play along with the trade federation. In his mind, the outcome on Naboo is not as critical as he as already achieved his goal of Chancellor. He realizes that by stringing the trade federation along, either outcome could be benificial.

If the TF kill the Queen, Jedi, and control the planet...that would just accelerate his future plans showing that the republic needs to have an army to counter the TF threat. If the TF are defeated, he needs to move along to Plan B (the separtist movement) to once again try to prove the need for a republic army.

He knew it were to happen. He was just trying to terrifey the Viceroy of the Trade federation. He did want the queen to sign the treaty but he knew Nute Gunray would fail.

It seems to me, that Palpatine/Sidious seemed to take great care in studying people. He had to have served on the senate for a number of years prior to the Naboo/TF incident, and he is also the master manipulator, so he would have had plenty of time to gain knowledge of Padme's character, the inner workings of her circle. It is a possibility that he knew exactly what she would do in response, and was stringing the TF along from the beginning. Though, logically, it doesn't really work out if you take the whole movie into context. Still, he does seem to roll with the punches, and more than likely, that is what he did here, working every angle to his benefit.

I should clarify my above statement a bit in saying that he studied Padme as an up and coming politician before she was elected Queen. He has seemingly manipulated everything to suit his goals and desires and as I see it he either knew she would react in the way she did when the TF tried to get her to sign the treaty, or he completely underestimated her strength, and then had to adjust his plans as needed. That seems like a stretch, so I am leaning towards the idea that he knew she would escape and come for help, knew she would have to go back to her people when the conflict was not resolved in the Senate (After he got what he wanted), and then sent Maul there to kill her when she got back. What he did not count on was Maul getting killed by Obi-Wan. I think h e assumed maul would be the victor and that is probably where his plans got thrown off.
