Maybe this has been discussed before, so please close this thread if this is the case.

Anyway, I was really wondering if Palpatine is/was able to affect Anakin's dream wherein he sees Padme dying.

The reason I obviously ask this is because we full well know now that Anakin's turn to the dark side and becoming a Sith is that he wants to keep her from dying. And so Palpatine tells him he possesses the knowledge to sustain life.

One could possibly think that Palpatine played a hand in this somehow affecting Anakin's dream life to make him believe that Padme could die, and obviously this opens the door for Palpatine to bait the hook for Anakin to pursue this power.

Maybe it is just Anakin through the Force seeing Padme's future that she will die, but clouded wherein he does not see he is at the foundation of her death.

Anyway, just wondered if this was a possibility on Palpatine's part to affect Anakin's dream, especially if he had been confiding in him about their relationship.

    Darth Sin!

I used to actually think that Palps was manipulating his dreams ever since he met him, from his mother to everything else.
But it is not covered or mentioned in the film so it is one of those things that is up to the eye of the beholder.

i don't think so, but he certainly "tells" anakin how to deal with those visions. probably from an early age...

I think anything is certainly possible. Sidious has a lot of insight into what's goingto happen, and he is the universe's ultimate manipulator of events. I think it's a good theory.

    I have thought this too.

In ESB think that Vader does the same to Luke when his friends are at cloud city. Maybe Palps teaches him this after ROTS

Excellent point Bill Brasky. I've always thought, too, that Vader manipulates Luke through the Force to get Luke to come to Cloud City. Otherwise, how could it have been a trap for Luke if Luke didn't know they were there?

Vader knew Luke would be searching the Force, same as he once did with Padme.

Vader's manipulation to lure Luke is a bit different - it's not by influencing dreams by some special power, rather, he tortures Han Solo so that Luke can feel his friend's pain. It's a bit of a stretch in that instance to see how Palpatine could somehow make it so that Anakin dreamt of Padme dying - it was the Force trying to tell Anakin something, however, he drew the wrong conclusion.

But still a central theme that the Dark Side/Sith manipulate events through the Force to get what they want.

He didn?t have to affect Anakin?s dream. He dreamed that she would die and she did die.

I find this a little similar to what happened in the Matrix Reloaded. Neo dreamed that Trinity would die. He made every effort to keep her out of danger but that actually created the very situation that lead to her death. At least Neo was actually able to bring her back.

I do firmly believe that Anakin's propensity to dream - indeed, his entire ability to sleep - is being curtailed and controlled.

I am put in the mind of another "chosen one" of lore, who did not sleep for forty days.

It is under sleep-deprived duress that a man is most suceptible to persuasion; that he is most on trial; that he is least himself.

Did anyone catch in the novel how after the opera, Anakin goes to meditate as hinted at by Palpatine, only he does it in the temple (the nexus of Force energy) and uses the Sith technique in an attempt to find a way to stop his dream? After this he becomes more moody and even thinks things and wonders where that is coming from. Creepy.

Hmmm...I'm not sure if the Vader/Luke thing is the same as Palp/Anakin. Yoda stated that Luke would see things through the Force, and he saw Leia and Han in the Sky City. I'm not sure Vader was affecting Luke, plus Luke wasn't dreaming, he was concentrating through the Force.

However, I do have a feeling Paply might have been effecting Anakin via dreams.

Though, if Palps told Vader how to manipulate one through dreams, wouldn't that mean Vader would find out about Palpatine doing that to HIM with his mom and Padme' dreams..eh...if I was Vader and he'd told me that...I would have been Pi$$ed! LOL

There is no "evil spirit" mentioned in the screenplay, novel, or graphic novel Howell. And Lucas himself, whom you have so much respect for, said Anakin is responsible for the bad choices he makes.

It sounds like Order 66 is a complete surprise to the jedi. That's why they die. Plus, the sheer numbers of Clones would make it impossible to mind trick every one of them...

Yes their Force powers do tend to be

Exactly! I do agree Ani's a tragic character (depending on the use of that word), but he is responsible for his actions. I don't know why people keep trying to make excuses like he was a dumb, brainless puppet. Yes, he was manipulated, used, mislead etc etc..BUT someone who is clear about what is right and wrong would stop and say ok, you (Palps)make sense and you've never steered me wrong but geez, I am not going to kill children who are totally innocent. The Jedi killings you can argue about b/c in Ani's mind they wronged him or rejected him or have turned bad and are a possible danger to him. I wouldn't argue that, but someone could.

Plapatine has been manipulating Anakin ever since he became a Jedi:
And you young Skywalker, we will watch your career with great interest...
I wouldn't be surprised if he sent him thease visions somehow.
I do not think Padme would die if Anakin didn't fall to the Dark Side. Anakin asked Palps for help after this nightmare. The suggestion Palps gave him considered his turn to the Dark Side. Palpatine would be a logical reason for Anakin having this dream.

I want to jump in here.

Palpatine put in nicely in TPM: WE WILL WATCH YOUR CAREER WITH GREAT INTEREST, YOUNG SKYWALKER.

I think it's a very good thought that Palpatine has known about Skywalker from early on.

I started a thread the other day about this and it was shut down.

In the novel and hopefully in the movie, Palpatine tells Annakin of a Sith who could create life and also stop death.

I was wondering if perhaps Sidious knew of this and either used this Sith to create Annakin or did it himself after learning the power.

There have been allusions to Palpatine being "like a father" to Annakin.

Or perhaps Annakin was born of the Force entirely.

But you're right, Palpatine, I think, influenced Annakin's dreams. He could have the same thing with his mother and very well done this with Padme because Palpatine, despite the big secret of the wedding and their love, knows they are together.

He seems to have deep thoughts regarding everyone. So if he can control the majority of the senate and Jar Jar Binks at the same time, then why not affect Annakin, who honestly is not thinking very clearly after losing his mother. He has a maturity problem.

If palpatine can cloud the vision of the jedi and manipulate his own appearance it stands to reason he is manipulating anakin's visions.

I think it is a great plot move too... otherwise it seems like anakin is just a pawn of fate... a choice of duty vs love that seems unfair.

With Palpatine foreseeing padme's possible death he could manipulate the scene from both sides... just like he has done with everything else.

(side note... good to see you around DS)

So Palpatine is also the cause of Anakin dreaming about his mother dying ?

    No

This was a VISION Anaknin SAW THE FUTURE

In the form of a dream

I dont think palpatine had anything to do with anakin's dream's about his mother but by telling palpatine about those previous events he gives palpatine a tool he can use for leverage.
