I was reading the ROTS novel last night when I came across something interesting. When Obi-Wan and Yoda were watching the footage of Anakin destroying the temple. On the recording Anakin said the holocrons are now back in our possesion Master. And Sidious said Now we can both learn all the secrets of the Sith. Does that mean that Sidious only threw the I know how to create life or was that just to get Anakin to turn. Discuss. If this has already been discussed the mods can lock it up or I will.

I also read that last night, but what gets me is when Vader is lying on the lava shores, Sids goes to check him out, and wills him to live. I get the feeling that in the novel, Vader actually did die, but Sids willed him back to life...

Maybe he can alter things to a degree...

I also wonder if Padme was killed by Sids. Think about it, Sids never goes to see Padme, Obi-Wan and Yoda never talk to him either. When Vader asks about Padme's well-being, Sidious says that Vader killed him...how would he know this? The Dr.'s don't know why she's dying...maybe Sids altered teh midichlorians in her body to kill her...which would be untraceable.

When Vader starts to force rage around the room, Sidious smiles behind his back, right after he tells him of Padme's death.

    Makes you wonder.

I think a lot of ROTS is just to fuel the fans.
It's all very up in the air. You can take from it what you want.
I rather like the fantasy that Anakin was created by Sidious and the bible-like reading is massively wrong. The last film in the saga is very open..

That's interesting Darth. I never thought about how Sids could have actually manipulated Padme to die because that's the only way he was going to keep Vader.

In the novel Palpatine tells Anakin that Plagueis the Wise learned the ability to use the force to manipulate the midichlorians to create life. He then says, certainly if life can be created where none exist, it would be possible to sustain a life that already exist. I didn't take this as him saying he could bring someone back from death or keep them from dying but that the knowledge and ability is definately there.

When Anakin pleads with Sidious' to help him save Padme' from dying, Sidious says, only one has achieved this but together... this tells me that he's referring to what I referenced above; I never took it that Sidious' was going back on his word/story.

I do think he can "will" people to live, as he did with Anakin on Mustafar. But if he caused Padme' to die, wouldn't he be willing to do this to others as well? Wouldn't that be a skill he would use freely? I'm not sure about that one, but it does sound plausible. We'll have to look into that one.

i think when the medical droid told obi-wan she lost her will to live, that was the audience's cue to know how she died.

as for sidious saving anakin...its possible i guess.

now that i think about it, why did he save him? he could have killed him and gotten somebody stronger.

is it that he knew anakin would be weaker, so sidious wanted someone to be his whipping boy?

No! Once he had brought Anakin to the dark side, he than admit that only one was able to attain this ablity; that being Sidious master. It was then, that once he had declared Anakin a Sith lord -- he than told him only together can we discover a way to create life.

I think Sidious is more powerful can we can possibly imagine [face_whistling].

When he finished off Master Windu he cries out "Power.....Unlimited Power". Here are my unsubstantiated theories of things Sidious did, either directly or indirectly:

    Created Anakin
Arranged kidnap of his mother and gave Anakin visions of her danger
Kept his mother alive until just after he discovers her in order to maximize his anger.
Gave Anakin visions of Padme dying in childbirth as a means to tempt him to the Dark Side
Killed Padme so as to remove her as a distraction for Anakin/Vader.

I also like the idea that Sidious kept Vader alive on the shore of the lava river.

After seeing RoTS I became convinced that Sidious had played a far greater role in events than maybe even GL realises :D

I think what happened was that the Cloned Emperor touched Leia's stomach while she was pregnant wtih Anakin (Solo) and they thought that meant Anakin was cursed ... or something like that.

Why does everyone thinks Sidious smiles after he tells Vader that he killed Padme, he clearly doesnt. But he was laughing at Vader's 'NO' because I sure was

I think Sidious did not know how to create life. It was a load of bantha poodoo made up to make Anakin turn. He even admits it in the book/movie. He says to Anakin that the power was only achieved by one, maybe together they can find a way. I think maybe the Plageus(sp)story was at least partially made up as well. It is not a coincidence that Sidious tell Anakin this story about keeping people alive the day after Anakin has a dream about Padme dying. Either Sidious sent the dream or felt the dream in the force.

The only person who knew how to cheat death and create life was Darth Plaugeis. Palpatine told Anakin that Darth Plaugeis taught his apprentice (who Anakin figures out is Palpatine) everything he knew. That was a lie so Anakin would turn in order to get those powers; Palpatine never learned how to do those things. So yes, he threw the cheating death and creating life story out there to seduce Anakin.

My roommate gave me the Dark Empire I graphic novel for my birthday (they like me, they really like me!!) so I just looked this up since I have had time to read it cover-to-cover just yet. Yes, Palpatine touches Leia's stomach while she is pregnant with Anakin Solo and says, "At the appropriate age, I will displace the personality that dwells within...take on its young jedi body with my own." But then he seems to change his mind and tries to convert Leia, but Leia instead brings Luke back from the darkside and the three of them (Luke, Leia, and unborn Anakin) are able to turn Palpatine's storm against him.

...er...I don't know what that has to do with anything but there's the EU clarification.

Back on topic: IMHO, I think he may have known how to manipulate midichlorians to create life and he just presumed that maintaining life or cheating death would be the natural next step of that knowledge, but he never found it. I'm pretty certain that Darth Plagueis didn't have the ability to cheat death either. I am of the opinion that the "one" who found this ability is the Whill whose journal Qui Gonn discovers and passes this knowledge on to Yoda and Obi Wan, because it's clear that the path to cheating death is selflessness so the Sith are, by their nature, unable to accomplish this.

i like the palpatine EU on the OS as "the" story. so sidious could save his own life, but not others, like plagueis. sidious couldnt help anakin save padme, but they could work together on it.

also, it seems that sidious understands that he cannot live and rule forever, although he will try. sidious seems to care about the sith order, i thought. thats why he says to yoda that anakin will surpass both them and the sith tradition will carry on beyond them. i was surprised that sidious can think beyond himself, but i guess he can. does that sound right?

ya, for others that story is summerized on the EU OS.

Creating life and prolonging it to stave off death are merely extreme effects of the same power. The two are linked. After turning Anakin, he admits he does not have this power, and that only one has. At the end of the film, the only one who has figured out even a variation on this power is Qui-Gon Jinn. Obviously, Sidious doesn't have the power to prevent death, or achieve any kind of immortality, and neither did Plagueis--at least, not if one goes by the missing Qui-Gon dialogue. According to Sidious, "my mentor taught me everything he knew." But not that, which indicates Plagueis didn't know. So why should someone who is unable to prolong life still be able to miraculously create it?

I dont think he did know hot to. After defeating mace Windu he says "To cheat life is a power only one has achieved but if we work together im sure we can discover the secret" That tells m ethat he doesnt know how to prevent those he loves from dying or create life period!

In an early draft, it was said Palpatine DID create Anakin, and tells him after the duel with Windu. I remember it's in a published book. The Making of?

Sidious is SMART, but he's not ALL-POWERFUL. He's a MANIPULATOR. He bends everything to his advantage.

He took control of the Trade Federation. He blockaded his own home planet of Naboo to gain a sympathy vote for his election to Supreme Chancellor. He made a move to have Padme assasinated (by Zam Wessell through Jango Fett through Count Dooku) for originally opposing the creation of his Clone Army. He initiated the Clone Wars on both fronts, as the leader of both the Sepratist and Republic armies. He sapped power from the Senate for himself, corrupted the Chosen One, turned the entire galaxy against the Jedi Order itself, and effectively destroyed the Old Republic in order to replace it with his own invincible new Empire.

He didn't create Anakin; the Force did that, as a "counterweight" to destroy Palpatine's plans. He didn't plan on the Queen escaping the Naboo blockade, and didn't know that she had escaped to Tatooine; Darth Maul traced the ship there and went to seek them out. He didn't use mind control on Queen Amidala to force her to vote against Chancellor Valorum, or on the hundreds of Senators to force them to vote him into office, or to give him their legal powers; they did that all on their own, with his encouragement. He didn't arrange for the capture and death of Shmi; the Tusken Raiders did. He didn't give Anakin visions of Shmi and Padme dying; those naturally came to Anakin through the Force. And he didn't kill Padme; Anakin did all by himself, by turning to the Dark Side.

But Palpatine manipulated EVERYTHING to his advantage. He saw the emergence of the Chosen One as a potential threat to his plans, and immediately adapted those plans in order to take that threat into account, converting a potential Jedi enemy into an even stronger Sith ally. He saw the corruption in the Republic and the Senate, and took advantage of that to get himself more legal power. He gave Anakin his own private "lessons" on the side, and then strengthened their friendship by telling him exactly what he wanted to hear about everything that he was struggling with in his life. He recognized Anakin's fear, and used that weakness to his advantage as often as possible. Palpatine was a GENIUS. He set the stage, adapted his plan as needed, took extremely well-calculated risks, and did everything possible in his power to reduce his risk of failure to an absolute minimum. But Palpatine wasn't anywhere NEAR being as all-knowing or all-powerful as many people might like to think (although it is to his credit that so many people might like to think so). He was simply a very intelligent, and incredibly deceptive Sith Lord. Omniscience and omnipotence may indeed have been his ultimate GOALS in life....but he wasn't there quite yet.

My personal opinion on this issue: Plagueis DID have the power to create and sustain life through the Force. He created Palpatine to be the "ultimate Sith Lord" who would finally be able to bring about their revenge. The Force responded in a like manner by creating Anakin to be the Chosen One who would undo their plans and restore balance. Plageuis intentionally withheld

Wow Master Jedi that was a well thought out point. Everything you said makes perfect sense. One thing that still gets me after Palps admits that he doesn't know why does Anakin still stick with Palps.
