I'm a new user here but I'm 19 and have been a Star Wars fan since my mom had me watching them when i was 4, but anyway I was just watching AOTC and the part right after Padme's assassination attempt where she's talking to Chanc. Palpatine and before she dones, Palpatine finishes her sentence. Thats when Yoda gives that suspicious look, after Palpatine finishes her sentence. So I was thinking maybe Yoda sensed some of the Dark side or maybe just some force power in Palpatine, and it made Yoda think like "wait a minute, how can he read minds". (even though what Padme was sayin might have been easy to finsih for anyone, I don't know) Just a thought.

I thought that too. I think Yoda could sense something, but he pushed it aside not thinking their Chancellor would be a Dark Lord. In EPIII I think we'll see Yoda blame himself for things he had noticed but just pushed aside in the past. He underestimated the Dark Side's true power.

Man, Iv been sayin that since my second viewing of the film. He takes the words right out of her mouth. If you think about it, the sentence is not that easy to complete. "..The situation is that serious" from "I do not think". She could have been getting ready to say a million other things. Yoda was suspicious and cut an eye at ol Palp.

I noticed that as well. I think the reason Yoda didn't do anything is because to people in the movie, people who don't know about Sidious, it's completely absurd that the Dark Lord would be Chancellor.

    welcome to the boards :)

yoda was definitly suspicious of palps, and i think george should have followed up on that suspision, and made more out of it than the breif glance.

i have just re-watched the scene in question and while I agree that Yoda does sense something I do not believe that it is Palpatine's inherent evil nature. Rather I believe that he senses the impending union between Padme and Anankin. As most true fans know Yoda's control of the force allows him brief glimpses into future events and I believe that this is what he is sensing as alluded to in Star Wars Insider Issue 7. Also many true fans still believe that the Palpatine Sidious connection is merely a Lucas red herring.

It's possible, but I don't think so. Palpatine possibly just finished her sentence, because it was fairly obvious what she was going to say, even if she said it slightly differently.

Also, if the PT has taught us anything, it's that Palpatine is exceedingly good at hiding his identity, or else he wouldn't take the risk of being with Yoda so much. I believe Yoda was just thinking over the situation at hand, and what should be done next.

I think Yoda sensed something but, he wasn't quite sure what he sensed.

Yoda, knew what Padme was going to say before she finished it. However so did Palp, THAT caused some suspicion, he did not sense Force, which is what caused his suspicion.

i think that right at that moment when Palpatine finished Padme's sentence, Yoda sensed something, but it wasn't enough for him to understand it. I think Palpatine realized his mistake. Right after Yoda gave him that look, you see for just a split second, Palpatine looks down in Yoda's direction. I think he covers up quickly enough for Yoda to not really know what he sensed.
by the way, welcome to the boards!

I dont think Yoda sensed the dark side in Palpatine. I think he was just suspicious as to why Palpatine intervened, and showed a bit of mistrust because Palps is a politician.

Perhaps jolly ol' Palps got a little laxed on his shielding of the Jedi's perception? ;)

The only thing Yoda sensed, or better smelled, was that someone farted. He knew that politicians were dangerous, but this stench was truly sinister...hence the "Smell the dark side here, i do!"-expression on his face. Mace obviously wanted to say sth about this matter, but was too intoxicated to even stand up for quite some time.

Yes, according to the script, he is giving Palpatine a suspicious look.

He wonders why Palpatine thinks Jedi should be involved to protect the senator - just as Padme and Bail do. Does Palps know something that they don't? Surely bringing Jedi onboard is a little OTT?

Perhaps by Ep3 Yoda realises that Palpatine wanted Jedi involved because he knew there was a good chance that they would track down the killer i.e Jango, and eventually discover the clones. It's then that Yoda wakes up and smells the coffee. "Done up like a kipper, we have been!"

This explanation seems to be most likely IMHO.

You can't read too much into an explanation - the movies still have to be made for the average fan - and I believe the average fan would see Yoda's look and think "now why is he so suspicious?"

It would have been even better if Yoda had done the look when Palpatine suggested that Obi-Wan (and consequently Anakin) look after Padme's security.

They were neatly manipulated by Palps and they didn't even know it.

I think the average *viewer* might wonder this, but not the average *fan*. Most people just going to see these movies just to have a good time would probably just think Yoda was looking back at Palpatine when he starts talking. The average fan would probably catch Yoda's expression and would understand it.
