I know I did (and I'm not a child). I think he was scarier than Vader. Don't get me wrong, Darth Vader is a better villain and character, but there was something terrifying about Maul. Maybe the fact that he was on his own, like some kind of deranged psycho. Or that he never spoke. Or that he looked like something out of Dante's Inferno.

    Anyone agree? Disagree?

    ****, yeah.

And I was 27 when TPM came out.

I thought Vader was pretty damn scary when ANH initially hit theaters--keep in mind, I was only five--but by the time ROTJ came and I found out he was Luke's father, I wasn't afraid of him anymore.

No. I was scared of Vader as a kid though. :D

I also find Yarna D'al Gargan scary. :p

I think he would have scared me quite a bit of I was a kid when The Phantom Menace came out. I think it's the eyes. I read somewhere once that none of the cast or the crew would look the chap who played Darth Maul (I've forgotten his name [face_blush] ) in the eye when he first got into make-up, as he looked to intimidating, and I don't blame him!

Not really. I fing gentlemen villians such as Tarkin and Dooku scarier.

That baby Ewok did scare the bejeesus outta me when I was a kid, though.

I loved (and still love) Darth Maul. Yeah, he looks freaky, and like Oakessteve said, had I been a young kid when TPM came out, I think I would have been scared. I know some people wished Maul had had a lot of lines in the movie, but I like that he said next to nothing; it made him vastly more intimidating. It's a good thing they replaced Ray Park's voice though. I don't think anyone would be intimidated by his fairly thick British accent. ;)

The only thing that keeps Darth Maul from scaring me, even to this day, is remembering what someone said about him once (don't remember who)... "He looks like a Cherry Coke can. Was Lucas thirsty when he made him?"

The rejected design for Maul -- the "Sith Witch" design with the long red tendril-hairs and blue skin etc. etc. ... now THAT was some scary stuff.

Didn't look very Star Warsy though. I'm glad it didn't get picked. Maul is cooler.

Ya gotta love a villain who was conceived as a cross between Satan and Bozo the Clown!

I'll never forget it. I was subscribing to the Insider at the time. And the one with just Maul's face on the cover came in the mail. I brought it in and my roommate was standing next to me as I opened the plastic wrapper thing. When I turned it over and saw the cover, we both reacted the same.

    "What the **** is THAT?!"

It really creeped us both out. I normally kept the magazine on the coffee table in front of the TV for a few weeks so people could read it. I kept finding the magazine face down, so people did not have to look at Maul's face. LOL!

I thought that not only was Darth Maul the most intimidating physicaly but he also had one of the most aggressive fighting styles of the time. All in all I was very happy that GL tried to make a scary Darth, too bad he bit it in the end.

He didn't really scare me, but he gave me chills, especially when he confronts Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon and removes his cloak, showing off his horns.

Dude, just imagine. You're walking down a dark alley, you turn a corner and see Maul, just looking at you, not saying anything. He seems like the kind that would just kill you for fun. Dooku or Palpatine wouldnt kill you unless you were inportant, or got in their way. You wouldn't be worth their time otherwise. Maul would kill you for making eye contact with him.

I wasn't scared of him, but I found him very interesting as a character (still do). Very intimidating yes, and probably not a guy I'd like to meet in an alleyway.

Did anyone else get the vibe of an extremely religious person in maul, or was that just me?

Scary, no...as a child, perhaps. Then again, I really liked DV as a child, too. ;)

No, I found Maul a very cool, but dangerous character who's untimely death allowed him to keep his mystery.

    I was too old to find him scary... but if I was Qui-Gon or Obi Wan, I'd have tripped the guy next to me and ran away like a little girl... 8-}

lol, strilo, that's pretty funny. As for my views on Maul, I found him to look kind of rediculous. Not scary or intimidating. Powerfull, yes, but he never held the presence of Vader of the Emperor. His fighting style was great though. Very aggressive and "free" styled. He rally never appealed to me all that much though. He looked "over done" will all the makeup and the horns looked silly. His perforamce was decent though, I just wasn't scared or ever too interested in him. Dooku is much more interesting to me.

I was more Scared of Darth Sidoues then Darth Maul. Vader Never Sacred me. In Return of the Jedi, The Phantom Menace, and Attack of the Clones, Palptine/Sidoues is really Scary. Even when they play his theme Music. Darth Maul was Scary, but not as Scary as Plaptine.

EDIT Darth Maul did in fact gave me the chills, but not as much as Darth Sidoues. It was pretty cool when Nute Gunray was Scared and Terrofid by Sidoues. I like the fact that Dooku told Obi-wan how the Dark Lord of the Sith Betrayed Nute Gunnray. It makes The Phantom Menace more Darker and saying Qui-gon was my Apperctice. That go me more of liking The Phantom Menace.

That's how I feel. That interogation droid freaks me out way more than Darth Maul.
I've always liked Darth Vader and he didn't scare me, because he turns good in the end.
I just think Darth Sidious is plain evil, but he doesn't really scare me.

Maul didn't scare me because I was 14 when TPM came out, but he sure did scare my nieces.

They were 5 and 6 at the time.... :)

Darth Maul was very intimidating though, just the way he looks at people and the way he paces like a tiger before he shanks Qui-Gon.

by the way, I believe this is the first time I've posted in a month.... its good to be back :)

    damn work....
