The scene where Padme falls out the ship and Anakin wants to go after her during the Dooku chase, but Obi Wan stops him, when you first saw that scene, were you surprised?

Did you think Obi Wan was being cruel or just focused on the mission? Did it come off to you that Obi Wan wouldn't have cared if she had died at that point, or did you think he knew she would be alright? What if it was a river of lava and rock cliffs were beneath them, would Obi Wan said the same thing?

Obi Wan: What do you think Padme would do if she was in your place?!

Anakin: She would do her duty.

    Discuss?

I would have really liked to see Anakin go and save her, leaving Obi-Wan to go alone. There would be an emotional scene between Anakin and Padmé, and Padmé then tells Anakin to go help Obi-Wan while she gets backup. Anakin comes in just at the right time and saves him, and then we continue on with the normal ending with Yoda.

I think he was just focused on the mission. At this point, a large sum of Jedi died, a war had just broke out, and catching Dooku was (in their minds) their best chance of ending the war.

Odds are that if Padme fell into this, she would be dead.

I'm with Obi-Wan on this one. A galactic war is about to start, and the leader of this war can be captured. Without him, the Confederation wouldn't stand a chance. Obi-Wan was looking about the big picture, rather than Anakin's feelings. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

    At first, yes.

But then Obi-Wan was right, all his reasoning made sense. So ultimately no.

I would have liked for him to have gone after her, but, in this scene we get another glimpse of Anakins nature. So, ultimately, I would say no.

I was looking forward to a lightsaber duel, not Anakin and Padme building sandcastles. I'm glad Obi-Wan told him to get his act together and leave his girlfriend for dead.

Hey, I'd imagine ILM could do some pretty funky sandcastles :p

... not Anakin and Padme building sandcastles.

    "I don't like sand castles."

Anyway, this was an interesting thread idea! I did for a minute want him to go save her all heroic-like, but when Obi-Wan shouted "I can't take Dooku alone! I need you!", I realized he was right. Sometimes we have to put our friends below the greater cause... as we learned in ESB.

Watch the conflict in that scene... after just before he was complimenting him, "Good call, my young Padawan!"... from comrades to, just at that moment, mortal enemies...

Not really. I wanted to see a lightsaber duel more so than some predictable love scene.

Anakin was just concerned that clonetrooper was gonna steal Padme.

Not really. I was waiting for a sabre duel.

Obi knew that Padme was going to be all right because he used the force. Anakin isn't a good jedi so he thought Padme was gonna die or something. [face_laugh]

Heck no!!! I was hoping they would just leave her sprawled on the sand. One of my favorite scenes in the movie is when she smacks the ground.

    Good fun!

She fell onto a soft dune of sand. 8-}It's not like she was mortally hurt or anything. Obi-Wan's mind was centered on the ultimate goal of saving lives, as it should be.

Anakin was just a reckless love sick apprentice who had no real concern of the implications of Dooku's escape because duty was no longer top priorty for him. Tsk tsk. :)

    This is a difficult one.

On the one hand, leaving her behind resulted in a loss of focus for Anakin and the duo's ultimate defeat. So its probable that if he had been allowed to go back for Padme, he would have been more focused and both he and Obi-Wan may have not been defeated so. And could have fought together.

On the other, the War had been started and capturing Dooku was of prime importance. To Obi-Wan, Padme could be sacrificed if both he and Anakin could defeat and capture Dooku.

In both cases the war would continue and Dooku slipped out of their hands.

But anyway did I want them to stop for Padme?
Even though I don't feel going after Dooku would achieve anything (and I was proved right), I guess they did what they should have done, considering Padme was not badly hurt and was able to get another ship.

I find it interesting that Obi-Wan stopped Anakin from going after Padme, but had no problem when Anakin saved him instead of chasing after Zam.

His principles seem to depend on whether or not he has solid ground under his feet, doesn't it? ;)

Obi-Wan is truly a flawed (but great and interesting) character.

SaberGiett, Wouldn't soft sand be like smacking into a brick wall going at high speeds? :p Why you tryin to bring me down, man!!!??? :D

JK, Had they stopped for Padme, Dooku would have escaped cleanly and the saber fighting wouldn't have happened.

    Excellent point, Grilled-Sarlacc.

By wanting to go after her, he was not only listening to his feelings (just as Luke would years later), he was doing his duty.

Duh i did say that. But my point was that whether they went for her or not, the result was still the same, Dooku would escape and the war would continue to where EP3 starts.

    BTW G-S good point.

Anakin's priority was Padme, Obi-Wan should have realised this. Anakin was still her protector, and so his instinct was correct. Their mission objectives may have changed but with Padme still in danger she needed their (or at least Anakin's) protection.

OOO, thats a tough question. If it wouldn've been me i would've socked obi-wan and jumped off too Padme.
But on the other hand he had a responsibility to do. and thats what he did. So i cant really go one way or the other.... thats for you to decide

I didn't want Anakin to go and rescue Padme. She seemed alright when she fell and the ground wasn't exactly the most dangerous thing to land on. Obi-Wan wanted to stop the war by catching Dooku, and don't forget their ship was being chased by two other ships.
