I was watching Episode 1 The Phantom Menace and there is a line in the movie where little Anakin says he had a vision that he came back and freed all the slaves, if his visions were so accurate how come he didn't do this? any comments please? Thanks

He said he had a dream. It wasn't necessarily a vision.

I think it was more of a boy's wishful hoping than a full blown Force-vision. Anakin didn't like being a slave. Anakin Skywalker was a selfless, kind, forgiving young boy who didn't like seeing people suffer. Anakin probably wanted to stop slavery then so others wouldn't have to endure what he and his mother had to.

Seei feel he did have a force vision, Qui Gon Jinn even says "He can see things before they happen, It's a Jedi trait" I bet this was something that just got left out or forgotten about.

I think maybe he was seeing a possible future for himself. Like Yoda says: "Always in motion is the future." Anakin got visions of possible futures throughout his life and never really figured out how to best handle them. This was just one of his earlier ones, and the young, untainted Anakin enjoyed helping people, so it's natural he would have it at that age and bring it up in conversation.

The suggestion has been made that when Anakin finally defeats the Emperor he has freed the entire galaxy from the slavery and tyranny of the Sith. So what he said was true, from a certain point of view.

Qui-Gon was talking about Anakin's reflexes.

I realize he was talking about reflexes, but the fact he says "He can see things before they happen" tends to make you think he can see all sorts of things before they happen. IMHO

Technically, we didn't see any slaves on Tatooine in ANH. :)

Well, he did come back and freed his mother from the Tuskens. Too late of course.

Yes, but we find out later in ROTJ that Jabba the Hutt still had some.

RolandofGilead said: "The suggestion has been made that when Anakin finally defeats the Emperor he has freed the entire galaxy from the slavery and tyranny of the Sith. So what he said was true, from a certain point of view."

Bingo! That is my #1 explaination: The galactic celebrations at the end of ROTJ depict the freeing of the 'slaves' of Sith oppression throughout the galaxy. But there are other possibilities. And we know from the OT and the PT that visions and dreams are not always what they appear to be. They can be metaphors for some future event.

In AOTC, Anakin returns to Tatooine to find his mother. He frees her from the Sand People. When he left her as a child, she was a slave. We can go even deeper. Shmi, like her son, was freed by her own offspring before dying. Shmi was freed physically by Anakin, Anakin was freed philosophically, morally and physically (from his mask) by Luke.

And my long shot -- Jabba held Tatooine in virtual slavery. Luke, as Anakin's son and a Jedi like his father before him. destroyed Jabba and his cronies. By lineage Anakin returned (genetically) to Tatooine (through Luke) and freed those enslaved by Jabba.

I really thought that line meant something in '99. Will Anakin come back and free the slaves in Episode II?

Then Lucas bases Anakins turn on a dream of Padme dying, and he is obsessed with this, but what about freeing the slaves before that having those same dreams? This is just another plot point that I think Lucas developed in Episode I & II, that got thrown by the wasteside in Episode III.

It is funny cause I love when everyone defends Lucas for throwing in subtle set up plot points in Episode I & II that make more sense after Episode III, but no one talks about how this one was never explored, and now that line by little Ani means absolutely nothing.

Hmm, maybe it does. Anakin didnt have any Jedi training at that time. Maybe it means untrained force users dreams / memories dont really mean much, ie Leias memories of Padme. :D

Good point. When I first saw TPM and heard Anakin say "I want to be the first one to see them all", I got extremely anxious to see him turn to the darkside in Ep 2 and then hunt down jedis one by one and exterminate them from star to star until only Ben and Yoda are left. I thought that was gonna be how it went. Order 66 was LAME.

I agree with CJedi72. I think it was something that got left out in the sloppy race to get the films done asap. I thought they were going to make more of that in Ep. II. Have Anakin pull a Spartacus or something and rise to prominence in a slave revolt, and begin to move away from the Jedi at the same time, but instead, they tossed that idea out and went with the dream thing... which, can anyone explain how that's a more effective plot device? They cut Portman's part down so much, they never even explain what the nature of this danger might be other than "nightmares and childbirth complications". Pretty lazy screenwriting, like RTF 101 junk a kid would go with. Slavery and it's consequences would have been a much more interesting theme.

Fun movies, but plot holes galore!

I think it's supposed to be ironic, since he ends up enslaving the whole galaxy.

I agree, i think it's a plot hole/mistake, the fact that he says "I had a dream that i came back HERE and freed the slaves, means he meant Tatooine....IMHO...but hey i still love the movies, just starting a discussion to get some opinions other then my own..peace

Yes, ever since the release of SITH (as it became apparent he wouldn't free the slaves) I have taken this sentence to mean the entire galaxy. He did COME BACK (from the dark side) AND FREED THE SLAVES (of the entire galaxy). I think this is what it means - whether Lucas intended something else before is a question. But as it stands it means he came back from the darkside and freed all the slaves in the galaxy.

    Beautiful isn't it?

Yes, but Tatooine was not within the borders of the Republic/Empire. So technically, Anakin's actions didn't free the slaves on Tatooine, but could be construed as freeing the slaves within the Empire.

Anakin Skywalker: I had a dream I was a Jedi. I came back here and freed all the slaves.

Anakin never came back to Tatooine after the death of his mother. Never. Not in the EU and never again in the movies. Yes, saying Anakin freed the slaves by overthrowing the Emperor is a valid arguement however, if we want to take things literally...then no. Anakin never returned and helped free the slaves.

Remember, he never came back and freed all the slaves. Saying his come back from the Dark Side is not how I think the line was intended to be taken.

He says, "...come back here..." which implies Tatooine.

I think that the visions show what could happen given the events as they are at that point in time. Like any vision of the future, if you believe that the future is not set, then his vision is one of a possible future. If he had not turnedto the darkside, Anakin may have one day returned to Tatooine as a delegation to bring it into the Republic, thus ending slavery there.

As it turns out, he becomes Darth Vader, so that possible future no longer exists.

I believe George actually said this in one other the commentaries, maybe ROTS or ROTJ, I'm not sure. But it's the way I see it.

At least there was the whole "Remembering her mother via the force" deal that gave that some credibility, plus there was a scene that got cut out of Padme staring at Leia for an extra moment......
