We all know that Jedi have to construct thier own lightsaber as part of thier training and the lightsaber design is supposed to reflect who they are. However one of the most important aspects of the lightsaber has to be it's functionality as a weapon; however it looks. If you look at all the designs there are difference in lengths, buttons etc. If you look at Qui-Gons Saber it is long and simple, as someone described it the katana of lightsaber handles. Obi-Wans is similar but it has the 'ball' end thus reducing the length of the hilts grip and then there are Obi-Wans ANH and Lukes ROTJ which have the thin top and the cylindical end that reduce the grip even more, althougth it is possible the end of these two sabers could be used as a grip. And of course we know some sabers have buttons and some have the big switch. These are just some of the popular examples but if you look at pictures of lightsabers there lenghts etc do vary.

So I was wondering, in the Star Wars universe, is there a significance to why they choose any particular style, lenght etc. As I said a lightsaber needs to be functial so you would think a long siple hilt like Qui-Gons might be the obivous choice. Do you think any of these difference hilt designs would give advantades or disadvantages? Making a Saber that design reflects who they jedi are is important but surely not the only factor.

Also a quick question does anyone know in regards to Obi-Wans ANH and Lukes ROTJ if you are supposed to hold the saber just on the grip or if you can use the cylindrical bottom or grip it high up near the thin top of the saber.

In The Star Wars universe Obi-Wan changed his saber to the ANH styles so there must have been a reason for this, plus it did last him 20 years and even after it was battered and damaged it still seemed to work perfectly.

Most Jedi base the design of their lightsaber hilts off their masters', or some other Jedi mentor that has had a profound effect on his/her life. :)

Just take a look at Luke's in RotJ and compare it to Obi-Wan's in ANH. ;) :)

Ken Kenobi- And you have a nice day ;)

Yeah, althougth I stil thnk Obi-Wans is better than Lukes. I wished they made Obi-Wans Ep II the same as ANH. The gold and bronze they added makes it luke unblanced. The Black/grey was badass.

If you'd like to talk about fighting style you should go to saga and check out the personality characteristics in lightsabre styles thread. We've talked about colours and a bit about hilt designs. I just direct you there because if I post it here I'll just sound like a broken record :p

A lot of Jedi build there handles to fit there hand and such.Just like Anakin built his to fit perfectly to his hand. Even though he might not have know he was doing that, since he was in a dream state.

One interesting note is how lightsabers are usually built by the apprentice to resemble that of their master as a show of respect, yet Anakin's looks nothing like Obi-Wan's, which suggests he doesn't respect him.

I would imagine it's like picking out a pair of shoes - you want to be able to walk in them but still have an interesting enough look that fits your style.

And like other's have said: function, fighting style, and mentors have an effect on the choice as well.

I've always thought of building a lightsaber a bit like buying a house. In the end the one you pick (in the case of a house) is one that has the right 'feel' about it. I think when a Jedi picks parts for a saber, he goes on gut instinct, the parts he finds himself inexplicably drawn to.

Just an opinion of course, its slightly different to house hunting in that they have to build it from scratch, rather than picking one out of a large collection though.
