In the Genndy Tartakovsky cartoon Kit Fisto uses lightsaber his under water to fight battle droids.
In Splinter of the Mind's Eye, Luke uses his father's lightsaber under water to fight off a 'Lake Spirit.'

But i remember a sceen in the Phantom Menace novel where Qui-Qon repremands Obi-Wan for letting his hilt get wet and subsequently damaging it...

    My questions are:

    1. Are there any other instances in the EU other than what i've mentioned of people using lightsabers under water?
    2. What is the OFFICIAL stand on under water lightsaber use - do they work or not? If they do, what are their limitations, if any?
    3. Was the scene in TPM novel actually written by Lucas in his script, was it filmed, what are the chances of seeing it on the blu-ray sega box set next year? (PS, when is the box set due? Do we have a date, a month, a season?)

    Thanks guys!

Lightsabers turn off if you go into water in Jedi Knight 2, but worked underwater in the previous game.

In the latest version of the Star Wars RPG lightsabers don't work underwater normally but can be upgraded to do so. You were limited on how many upgrades a lightsaber could have so waterproofing wasn't a no brainer despite being one of the more useful options.

Waterproofing it would seem like a no-brainer though. Really, the Jedi weren't crazy prepared enough. Kit Fisto was of an amphibious species and probably wanted his weapon working underwater. Who knows when he'd need to kick ass beneath the waves.

Treis Sinde uses his lightsaber underwater in the Legacy comics when he is on Dac. I am pretty sure that in order for a lightsaber to work underwater, it has to be modified in order to work properly.

Yes, they do, and a lightsaber weapon is the most savage, painful
    creation employed?

I think the TPM Novel may have been a bit of a fluke. Lightsabers have been used under water in the Marvel comics run (not real continuity I know), a few times in the current Dark horse comics runs and Lukes lightsaber got soaked in Splinter of the Minds eye. Kind of silly that Jedi would be issued underwater rebreathers but thier weapons not able to take it.

Sabers shorting out underwater was also a plot point in one of the Jedi Apprentice books, IIRC, and I think that a couple of sourcebooks have stated that lightsabers need to be configured to work underwater without shorting out.

Would not lightsabers paraboil who ever is near by while under water?

Not necessarily. Lightsaber strikes don't boil skin upon direct contact. Burn, yes, and cauterization of the veins. Plus, we don't know quite how hot a lightsaber is to the touch. The specific heat capacity of water is such that it can take in quite a bit of heat without raising the temperature as fast.

Then again, these are Jedi, so a wizard did it.

Not that it's an any way, shape, or form canon, but this question comes up and is a crucial factor in my latest Star Wars lightsaber film "RIVALS" . It features my personal view on the matter.

I think there was a Young Jedi Knight book where they used lightsabers underwater too... something about being trapped underwater on Mon Calamari and using their sabers to cut through the ice or something like that. I forget if they were literally underwater or not, its been years, but I think they were all underwater at that point, so that's another example of lightsabers working.

It might not be an automatic feature, but considering how many dangerous situations a Jedi gets into, waterproofing a lightsaber sounds like a good idea. And not sure lightsabers ever produce much heat. During all the close combat scenes we've seen, its not like we see people sweating by getting close to a lightsaber, and can't think of an instance of anyone using a lightsaber for warmth. As a light source, occasionally, but not a heat source, I think. But its a fictional science, so whatever.

Well, lightsabers don't heat up the air nearby. In SOTE and the ANH novel, Luke holds his hand a couple inches from the blade and feels no heat whatsoever. It's only when the blade contacts a solid object does it transfer heat.

Per the EGttF, waterproofing was common for Old Republic Jedi, for reasons of rain as much as underwater combat. Kamino, Jabiim and Mon Calamari are cited as battlefields causing this. The fake sciency jargon for this feature is bifurcating cyclical-ignition pulse, a principle that requires two crystals. :-B

That's a different type of lightsaber, however. One that could work underwater.

The scene was in the script and it was filmed:

I think that after this incident Obi-Wan modified his new sabers so that they did work underwater, but I couldn't say specifically where it says that in an EU source. Obi-Wan uses his saber underwater on Kamino in TCW without trouble though.

I don't know whether the scene will be included on the new set or not. I suppose it depends on how extensive the material they include is and what else they have to put on there. This lightsaber scene is really just a bit of dialogue cut from the full scene so it might be too short to count as a deleted scene. If they're going to include a lot of deleted material though, maybe it will be included. I don't know when the new set is coming out but Lucas himself said 'next year' so it could be pre-Christmas 2011 considering when he said it.

I always think that scene is on the TPM DVD deleted scenes and every single time I am severly disappointed.

Granted I only watch the deleted scenes once every few years, but still...you'd think I would remember already.
