In TPM, the Jedi had no clue as to if the Sith that was killed was the Master or the apprentice. I was wondering if the Jedi maybe assume that, since Dooku left the Order right around the time of TPM, if Maul maybe had been his student in the Sith ways?

Or, perhaps the opposite, that Maul lured Dooku away from the Order and helped train HIM in the arts of the Sith.

I thought Dooku left the Order after Qui-Gon's death?

I don't know; I haven't read anything that directly STATES that, but it could be possible.

If this is the case, it's still possible that the Jedi may wrongly suspect that Dooku was already under Mauls influence; or, if they believe Dooku trained Maul, they may even go so far as to believe Dooku was already under the sawy of the Dark Side without their knowing, and had Maul kill Qui-gon for some reason {possibly as an excuse for him to leave the Order without really being suspected}.

Of course, they'd be wrong, but whatever.

It's just speculation, and we'll never really know, but it does make for some pretty good discussion.

i think dooku and maul never even met.
its possible that dooku was turning to the dark side before TPM, but i think he only joined the sith lord darth sidious after mauls death, because sidious needed a new aprenctice.

Had Dooku not told Obi-Wan about Sidious, the Jedi might have assumed Dooku was Maul's master given Dooku's age and high esteem within the Jedi order.

This is a very interesting topic there P_S. I know that ousley is very fond of posting the extended dialogue between Jocasta Nu(librarian) and Obi from the novel. In it, as memory serves, she was saying he was always seeking power. So they might think before he formally resigned his commission, he could have already have turned.

And as Yoda says, lie deciet are Dooku's ways now, so I don't think the Jedi believe Dooku's claim that the Senate is controled by the Sith.

Obi-Wan didn't believe Dooku about Sidious, remember.

They might address this once Dooku is dead later on.

YODA: Destroyed both of the Sith are. Resolved this conflict is.
*PALPATINE looks on in glee, as they haven't figured it out.*

Thats a great question. I believe you have stumbled onto something quite interesting here. This is a thread that deserves some serious spec. I must ponder.

I don't think so. I think that Sidious trained Maul and that Dooku discovered Sidious shortly after he left.

I think Yoda knows the Dark Lord of the Sith is out there somewhere and it's not Dooku. Yoda knows after Maul's death the Sith Lord would have to recuit a new apprentice which he did.

"Only the Dark Lord of the Sith knows of our weakness."

To answer the orginal question.......No, they don't.

Thats right Matthew - the confirmation of Dooku as a Sith answers the question to the council - that the Lord of the Sith was not Maul and still at large - and since Dooku was a Jedi at least 10 years earlier, he probably wouldnt be the Sith Master in the councils mind, although I doubt they would completely rule it out. Im suprised Dooku wasnt a Sith suspect in the 10 years btwn the TPM and AotC.

Do the Jedi know that Dooku is a Sith, specifically? Or do they think he's just a Dark Side user? Since the Sith is a very specific order-they don't know he's Tyranus, for example.

I think that it is safe to say that by the time that EpII comes around, it is clear that Maul is understood to have been the apprentice, but it is probably also safe to say that by the end of EpII Count Dooku is also believed to be a Sith Apprentice.....

But I have to believe that Dooku is by all regards a Dark Jedi, following Sidious because of his opinions of where the Jedi order is headed.

Maul and Sidious can definately be considered Sith Lords.
But isn't the way you reached the status of Sith Lord, derived from a Dark Jedi that has lost his path and fallen to the Darkside....?
