is there any reference in any novel or comic to a character's birthday? do we ever read about them celebrating their birthday? do they even know when their birthday is?!

yet another pointless topic for those with nothing better to do...

In one book (not sure which) it mentions Han's birthday and maybe Leia's. I says how Leia got Han a little corellian statue that was suposed to be rare but then she found out it was just a fast food mascot. Han got Leia pictures of Alderaan but I'm not sure if it was for her birthday.

luke's birthday is based off a tatooine year, since he didn't know he had a twin. For awhile thought he was older than leia.

In order to keep track of how old they are, they would at least have to recognize the passing of their day of birth. I don't see why they - or any sentient species, for that matter - wouldn't have 'birthdays'. Now, would they celebrate them with a cake, candles and presents? I don't know about that. Different cultures would probably have different traditions. Some cultures might even feature a sort of 'second birthday' marking a rite of passage into adulthood or something else that has greater importance than the actual day of physical birth. Such rituals were not uncommon in some real-world cultures.
