Do you think Paul Maul'Dib, Mr. Kwisatz Haderach, is arrogant? Does he get it from his mother?

I just read the book Dune for the 2nd time.

I have concluded that Paul Maud'Dib is a very arrogant teenager and needs to chill. Consider the evidence:

    1. How many names can a person have? This kid is Paul Atredies, Paul Maud'dib, Usul, the Lisan al-garib or something, and the Kwisatz Haderach, and then, Emperor!

    2. Paul at 15 years old has a convuluted scheme to become Emperor of the Known Universe, and intends to actually carry it out.

    3. Paul has no problem making himself a religious prophet and using this to take control of the Fremen population of Arrakis and using them to kill the soldiers of the Harkonens, the family his family has a feud with.

    4. Paul states that he has ownership over the Fremen, stating "The Fremen are mine." Oh that is nice. Jeez.

    5. Paul starts a galactic wide religious jihad that kills billions of people?

I have also concluded that he has picked up this unadmirable trait from his mother, Jessica. Here is how she is arrogant:

    1. Jessica ponders on how Paul can "use" the Fremen to achieve their Atredies goal.

    2. Jessica has no issue with exploiting the religious beliefs of the Fremen to further her agenda.

    3. Jessica uses that whole Bene Gesserit however you spell it Voice stuff. Rude.

I also have to say that from what I have read of what occurs in the other Dune books, Paul carries on this tradition of poor parenting, because his son becomes a giant worm who uses his magic powers to live for 3500 years, continuously resurrect and kill Duncan Idaho, and rules the universe in a rather authoritarian and brutal manner.

In this thread talk about how Paul Maul'Dib is the arrogant teenager.

Most of the names are thrust upon him, and most of what happens is actually outside of his control. If you were paying attention you noticed the passages that said that what happened was probably going to happen anyway, only Paul managed to avoid the worst futures.

If you think he is arrogant, he's tame compared to Alia, and his dear son Leto II (the god emperor).

    Agreed.

Paul was afraid of going down the golden path (That his son corrupted yet tamed) had he done so the Bene Gesserit would have held more power than they do now.

I haven't read the books, but the movies always gave me the impression that Paul had his destiny thrust upon him as much as he embraced it.

Still, he does seem a bit arrogant about it. Then again, I suppose knowing various futures could tend to give a person a detached aloofness toward life that could be viewed as arrogance.

To survive, Paul had to accept his future else he'd die.

Maud'dib is perhaps the most humble of his family after his father until Siona's generation in God Emperor of Dune.

He may come across arrogant, but it had to be done for the sake of the universe else all humans would become sloth and never be able to evolve.

For what it's worth, I agree that among Fremen prophets, he was far less humble than Keynes.

Among his own family, I should say he was more arrogant than Alia and Leto II. Because there's nothing really selfish about the Golden Path, while in the former case, that was much more of Harkonnen than her at work. Fat perv.

If you ask me, the harkonnen's were arrogant. But Paul, yes, Paul was arrogant and Leto II (who technically is Leto III) was even more arrogant.

I just started reading these books for the first time this summer. I've finished Children of Dune and I'm planning to start God Emperor of Dune once I finish my school reading.

But yeah, Muad'Dib as a blind guy wandering around in the desert crying about all the stuff he's screwed up = serves ya right

    Warrior_of_Mandalore Strikes Again!
