I wonder if he knows and if so, how it might effect him.

I would assume that he knows. We haven't been shown anything to assume otherwise. I don't know if Anakin would tell Obi-Wan that he's "the closest thing" he has to a father, even if his father had died when he was young. If Anakin believed that his father had died when he was young, or had abandoned him, he might have said that Obi-Wan was "like a father-figure". To me "the closest thing I have to a father" makes it sound like Anakin knows he doesn't have a father.

True. I think it would be wierd to know you came into the world the way he did. At least at the Temple, Jedi don't know thier parents, so, no one asks about his dad.

But then again, Anakin didn't come to the Jedi Temple until he was 10 years old. So he has an advantage over all the other Jedi Kids. Anakin knowing that he has no father might have something to do with his turning to the dark side. Knowing that he was a freak of nature that was born by a Virgin birth could weigh heavily on a kid. He'd be angry at nature for denying him a father figure...and you know the old addage....

We have to assume that he knows. At the same time we don't know what Shmi has told him.

I would say he knows. In nine or ten years time, Anakin had to have asked Shmi where his father was. What child wouldn't?

Shmi could have told him that she doesn't know, or she could have told him the exact same thing she told Qui-Gon.

But I would have to say yes, he knows that he has no father.

I'm thinking of the scene in Life of Brian, where Mandy tells Brian about his father...
"Your father isn't exactly Mr Cohen."
    "I never said he was!'

QUI-GON: Is there a Mr. Skywalker, Mrs. Skywalker?

    SHMI: ... He's on vacation...

    Later

QUI-GON: Hoo wee! Your momma sure does care about your Jedi training!

ANNIE: (Mocking Qui-Gon) Heeee heeee heeee heeee heee!

What about his "dna"...would this be only from Shmi? Or where would the other half come from?

Well, seemingly, from The Force...in the form out a big truckload of force-sensitive midichlorian cells, I guess.

This question actually digs a lot deeper than some of you might think.

This gets to a lot of central issues Anakin has, regarding not being able to let go of his mother and how old he was when he joined the Jedi Order.

He saw how normal families functioned on Tatooine. Moms, dads, friends, etc. Things that Jedi raised in the temple don't see.

Anakin carries these memories and values over to his relationship with Padme. He looks at her differently than other Jedi do because he was raised in more of a "normal" family.

I think he is aware he doesn't have a father and is seeking out that type of approval from father figures in his life, like Obi-Wan and Palpatine. We see this in the nightclub scene and in the one on one scene he has with Palpatine.

Knowing how evil kids can be, I'd say there's a good chance Anakin got teased for not having a dad as a kid.

It does seem that his only real friends are Wald and Kitser.

I am pretty sure Anakin knows he has no father, but have you ever wondered what it would be like to teach sex ed to a kid who was conceived without sex?? I mean, the jedi educate their younglings, I'm sure they get an excellent education, and it's also reasonable to suppose that as a slave Anakin got zero education. He probably isn't even literate, so has a huge amount od catching up to do.

Anyway, learning about human sexuality would be weird and probably somewhat alienating to Anakin. Of course, he surely knows the score; when he tells Padme how awful it is for him not being able to "be with her" I think it's clear he means intercourse.

Anyway, I'm getting off-topic. Probably Shmi told Anakin the same thing she told Qui-Gon.

Can you imagine the "Who's your daddy?" jokes he's had to put up with all these years??? No wonder he went to the dark side and killed all the jedi. They're all the kids that have been picking on him all these years.
But seriously, I'm sure it plays a big part in pushing him towards Palpy. He's looking for approval from one head authority figure and gets affirmation from him (Palpy) in the beginning. Then Anakins all like "Yes Master", "As you wish, Master". He's hooked.

It probably also is what makes Vader kill Palpy and save his son. He never had a real daddy, so he wants to be a good daddy and help his son. Regain favor by doing that. Geez. This is a physchologists dream family.
