Does anyone else actually *like* the hairbrush scene?

Yes, the dialogue would make a Harlequin romance writer balk, and Natalie Portman's demeanor is still disconcerting; however, the now-notorious "hairbrush" scene has some merit. Since the love story of AOTC failed to inspire pathos of any kind, it is left to this scene to properly convey the affection the characters have for one another. More important, it is the only time in the film Anakin and Padme are in the throes of marital bliss. (The melodic rendition of "Across the Stars," and the body language of Christensen and yes, Portman, accomplishes this reasonably well.) If the romance--the impetus for Anakin's fall--is to have any resonance, this scene can not be cut out.

For once, I'm glad Lucas doesn't listen to his fanbase.

If you're referring to the scene on the balcony where the "then love has blinded you?"
dialogue, then yes, it's actually the only "romance scene" out of the entire
trilogy that I like and find believeable. It shows her upper hand and experience
in relationships. It's a very honest scene and they both managed to do it well.

Well, it's a reference to the "Lorelei"-myth, I guess. Standing there, combing her hair and metaphorically causing the "fisher" to be blinded, crash the boat at a rock and drown. Like all the much maligned "corny" love- and balcony scenes, I think it's intended to show what a dream world - far away from their reality, "living a lie", really - this romance is.

Is this the scene where Padme turns around looking like an X-Heroin-Addict turned Crack-Whore? The lines are a little confusing but Hayden salvages some of it at the end. He has to do this in EVERY scene he's in with Portman. I have said it many times before; Hayden has woke his acting game up.

This is probably the only scene I'd remove from the film, or at least alter. NeoBaggins is right about Hayden salvaging it though, it could have been a lot worse.

When I heard that hayden was going to act with her, I knew he was to be trusted, cause I knew they would pratice and act love scenes, and that hair is one of those designs she's had in life.

    I love it

It's that other scene ("Hold me like you did on the lake of Naboo, when there was nothing but out love") that i could definitely do without.

I also agree about Hayden. It's one of his finer moments of the film - he seems so at ease and natural.Certainly the only good thing about the scene.

Portman looks like she's been on crack all night!

she was amazed when she received my birthday gift in 2002, and hayden really has been try to find a female in australia these past few years.

Natalie has had her hair simular to her padme role like sometimes in a ball, or long and curly. that gets me in the heart.

one thing about natalie, she plans to retire from hollywood in a couple of years to come, and live a normal human life as if she wasnt an actress, which is why she doesnt want an actor or a strong man for life.

this was filmed during reshoots - natalie had already lost weight for her role in V for Vendetta.
i like the scene - it's married people who haven't seen each other for a long time - padme is flirty - anakin is continuing to recognize how deep is his love. hayden is so natural here, just does a great job - and padme's "so love has blinded you?" certainly is foretelling.
but tell me more, mandragora. the "lorelei" reference. there are so many metaphors in this film - and even after 24 times there's something i didn't catch.
