Does Chewbacca hate Luke?

I was watching ESB the other night, and I realized that maybe Chewbacca and Luke have some issues. Consider:

- Chewbacca doesn't go help Han look for Luke at the beginning of ESB. Why not? He's covered in fur, so he's really a better candidate to look for Luke than anyone else.

- When Chewbacca "hugs" Luke, it almost looks like he's going to strangle him, but then he sees Han above and decides not to.

- And of course, who could forget during ANH when Chewbacca growls at Luke. That's an obvious example.

What do you guys think? I'm curious, perhaps Chewbacca has some run-in with Annakin in episode 3 and then holds a grudge?

And I think if you think about it, you can see some other examples of this behavior throughout the trilogy. In fact, I challenge you to provide an instance where Chewbacca actually helps Luke.

 

Wookies hold grudges. It all started when Luke tried to cuff Chewie in ANH.

imapilotyourapilot You may have a point however I think there is a deeper issue here... I think that Chewbacca is sexually frustrated, I mean look there isn?t a female wookie anywhere to be found. Think about it.

I'm going to reference the radio dramas in this post so purists may want to cover their eyes.

In the ESB radio drama, it's suggested that Chewbacca couldn't go out with Han on Hoth because he couldn't ride a tauntaun. However, he did go out later on to investigate the probe droid with Han, but I assume the reason was that it wasn't far to travel so he could walk.

In the ANH radio drama, right after Han made the deal with Ben and Luke to take them to Alderaan, he was offered a more lucrative by someone else deal and was going to renege on the original deal. It was Chewie who convinced Han that he should keep his promise to Ben and Luke even though it would be for less money. I don't think he would have done that if he disliked Luke to any degree.

Now, this is not necessarily proof that Chewie liked Luke, but I don't think he disliked him either.

I think the hug Chewie gave Luke on Echo Base was sincerely affectionate. The joke was that he just doesn't know his own strength. I don't think he was trying to strangle Luke. A clear example of Chewie trying to strangle someone occurs later, with Lando on Cloud City.

 

Chewbacca probably didn realize Han had left Echo Base to look for Luke. Even if he did, Chewbacca knew the dangers of going out into the wastes after dark.

Chewbacca was grateful to Luke when Luke was the one who organized the rescue of Han.

 

In fact, I challenge you to provide an instance where Chewbacca actually helps Luke.

Sure -- when the Falcon is escaping Cloud City and Leia receives Luke's telepathic cry for help. She insists on going back to save him, but a disbelieving Lando immediately starts to protest, citing the danger. It is only after Chewbacca explodes at Lando that he backs down and agrees to go back. Then, as the Falcon's co-pilot, it is Chewie's job to hold the ship steady in the delicate task of picking Luke up, which he does expertly. So there you have it, a clear example of Chewie helping Luke and having every intention of helping Luke.

 

Chewie growled at Luke in ANH because Luke tried to put binders(handcuffs)on him. At first Chewie doesn't understand that it's part of a trick to get into the control room,but then Han explains it and he relaxes. Chewbacca may have been a prisoner at one time and that's why he is against someone he doesn't know well putting binders on him.

Chewie didn't know Han left to look for Luke. He was still fixing the Falcon. Besides the fact that he had to care for the Falcon in his abscene I'm sure he would've helped Han.

He arms go around his back, no his neck. I was just a giant hug.

They didn't know each other. And besides, wouldn't you be a little upset if someone you didn't know cuffed you without warning?

 

Chewie loves Luke. How can the Echo Base hug not be considered the ultimate expression of platonic affection between a man and a Wookiee?

You know, for some reason, I really like that scene. It shows a completely different side of Chewie (compassionate rather than aggressive), and it's a rare moment to see such a minor character have a scene alone so that we can really focus on his feelings.

It's a touching scene to me.

VCT-Chewie going back for Luke at Cloud City is an EXCELLENT example of the Wookie helping Luke out. Good thinking.

Also: Chewie was co-pilot of the Falcon when it saved Luke from Vader at the Death Star in ANH.

 

Don't forget when Leia kisses Luke after he gets out of the bacta tank. The fact that Luke is showing up Han, Chewie's life-debt partner, probably angers him evn more than the cuff thing.

Yeah, but doesn't Chewie laugh at Han in that scene? He's got a life-debt with Han, and has sworn to protect him physically, but emotional wounds he's got nothin' to do with. Chewie and Luke are good pals, it's obvious.

 

If you read Heir to the Empire, it states that Chewie had a life debt to Han, which he then expanded to include Luke and Leia, therefore no, Chewie does not hate Luke.

 

He doesn't seem to like Stormtroopers very much for some reason.

When Han refuses to stay and help the Rebellion in ANH, Chewie says something to Han, and judging from Han's response, he was trying to convince him to stay and help. If he didn't like Luke he wouldn't have said anything and just agreed to leave.

 

Chewbacca would not fit on a Taun Taun, so that's why he didn't go with Han. IMHO...

Chewie hugging Luke is like when a dog plays rough and doesn't realize it. Chewie truly liked Luke, that was obvious.

Chewie snarled at Luke simply because he didn't know him that well and wasn't about to be cuffed. If you follow EU, maybe it's because he used to be a slave?
