I got the hardcover of SQ for free a week before I tore through Outbound flight. (I know it's not Thrawn material or The Specter Duology but I'd like to think that SQ still stands well on it's own especially in leu of the upcoming Allegiance. So having read Outbound, does that damper the fun that SQ might be or does it stand alone just fine?

They complement each other - they are meant to do so. Reading them either in the chronological or publishing order is just fine. I personally prefer the chronological. So, OB does not make SQ a moot read.

In my opinion, this is one that can go either way. It all depends on the experience.

If you're one who likes to read in chono order, then it works just fine. You're then presented with a feeling of "I wonder if they'll piece this or that together with this" type of sensation when reading SQ if you read OB first.

However, to read them in published order (SQ first), you're thrown in Luke and Mara's shoes so to speak. You're discovering the mystery with them. You know nothing more than they and that in and of itself can be an added element of fun, and enhance the journey through the book. You find yourself asking the same questions the characters are asking themselves and it is a nice way to make you feel like one of the gang.

But either does work. It's all about the experience you want

I read OBF before SQ. Doing so does ruin one rather big surprise in the latter, but other than that, not much. In any case, OBF was a much better book anyways.

While I agree that they can probably be read in either order, I'm actually glad that I read them in published order. As you said, CD, you're solving a mystery WITH Luke and Mara and there are more surprises along the way, I think. But I really liked SQ, so I think it's worth reading no matter whether you read it first or second.

I think the films should be seen in release order too. I think it's best to see the prequels after the originals.

i read these in release order. i think it was fun that way.. sorta like jeopardy where you get the answer before you get the question.

SQ is still worth it because it's not about Outbound Flight so much as it's about Luke and Mara solving the mystery and dealing with the Chiss. Some of the surprise element is gone, but it's still a good enough book to stand on its own.

It was at the start of my reintroduction to Star Wars that I grabbed the Outbound Flight hardcover and read it. I was not even aware of Survivors Quest at the time. I wanted to read the new Zahn book set in the PT. Later I grabbed a $1 copy of SQ at a used book store and was like "Uhhhh, Outbound Flight was like a Prequel to this! Cool! I rather enjoyed both books but must admit that I did like Outbound Flight more.

I read them in published order, and I agree with those who said that it's more of a mystery that way, even if I did prefer Outbound Flight to Survivors Quest...
