This is probably the stupidest question ever to be asked by someone here, but I have always wondered this- do you ever see the deathstar upside down in A new hope? I have seen pictures where that superlaser is on the southern hemisphere, and i always just assumed someone got the photo upside down.

If it is upside down for part of the movie (maybe when travelling to yavin?) why? What's the benefit of that and how does that work anyway? Like you know how in the B wing fighter, it always stays upright.. does the Death Star have some sort of mechanism like that where if it needs to be flipped 180 degrees.. people dont feel the effect?

I would imagine that being on the Death Star is similar to being on a planet, in some respects. If you are physically standing on a surface within the DS, you probably wouldn't notice that it was moving, unless something happened suddenly.

It's position is always relative to itself in space. It would only be the camera that is upside down when you think you see the superlaser in the southern hemisphere. In actuality, the superlaser stays in the norther hemisphere.

On Yavin when the Rebels are analyzing the plans in R2, the Death Star's North and Southern poles are on the side instead of up and down.

No, the poles are in the same place, the superlaser is shown in the wrong place (on the equator. It's a good thing the Empire didn't change the location of the exhaust port when they made the the final draft of the Death Star plans.

I totally forgot about that. Isn't the superlaser located on the equator? Like in the middle of the trench, I think. And by the way, that trench in the equator, is that where the thermal exhaust port is? I always assumed it was, but i guess there are several trenches. Is there a definitive answer?

The superlaser is in the middle of the northern hemisphere. When the graphics for the briefing were made, they were using concept art that had it at the equator (this is what I've heard, at least).

The trench is a meridian; if continued, it would run from pole to pole. In this case, the briefing graphics are the only source, and they show it to start halfway up the northern hemisphere, with the exhaust port at the north pole.

It only appears upside down when the rebels fly their X-Wings upside down.
