The star killer base had the D'Qar system as their next target after destroying the Hosnian system so did they know they were there or were they just targeting a random system without knowing they were there? Will the rebels need to find a new base or can they stay on D'Qar for episode8?

This thread will be locked shortly. In the meantime, I'll just let you know that this question is answered in the film. The First Order tracks a Resistance reconnaissance ship back to D'Qar, discovers that it's the location of the Resistance Base, and decides to blow it up. They fail to do so.

But since the First Order now knows its location, I imagine they will be moving.

Yep, they know the resistance base is in the Ileenium system, as they track Snap Wexley's ship back there when he returns from his recon mission. So they decide to nuke the entire system.

Yes. With a helmet-less and embarrassed Kylo in the room, Hux tells Snoke that they tracked a Resistance scout ship back to their base. This precipitates the decision to use the SKB again.

This comes after a scene at the Resistance Base where Poe explains to Leia that Snap's reconnaissance ship confirmed Finn's report on the SKB.

Thanks. Well I guess that further underlines some of the wooly plotting in TFA for me. Especially when you compare and contrast it to how it's portrayed in ANH.

It doesn't have anything to do with "paying attention" (if that was directed at me), but rather the context of how that information is related in the material. Watch ANH to get an idea of how such things can be appropriately constructed.

I don't see much difference between TFA and ANH in that regard, to be honest. Remember the scene where an Imperial officer informs Tarkin that they've checked Dantooine and found the Rebel base there deserted? The scenes mentioned here are, in my eyes, very similar to that one in how they play out.

^This. We've had thirty years to understand the plot of the original films. Give this **** time, people.

i was referring to the scene, with Vader and Tarkin, where it transpires that they purposely let the Falcon escape.

Ah! Well, I suppose that plot point is a tad more simplistic in its presentation. Is TFA really hard to follow, though? I mean, obviously the OP missed a few details, but there'll always be someone who does, with all movies.
Generally, I haven't gotten the impression that people are having trouble with the plot. Most importantly, I'm not ;)

It's not that it's a tad simplistic, it's that the writing is not pacticularly thought through IMO. The cumulative effect is that there's very little drama and threat presented by Starkiller. It's treated as an aside, as is pretty much everything. And in comparison, it's not that ANH is overly complex, it's just well written to the point that there's an internal logic. The Millennium Falcon escaping, the homing beacon is an actual plot point.

Snoke: "Where is the droid now?'
Hux: "Ren assured us that the droid was no longer necessary, that the girl was all we needed. By now the droid has likely been delivered into the hands of the enemy. They may have the map already."
Snoke: "Then we must crush them before they have a chance to reach Skywalker."
Hux: "We've tracked their scout ship to the Illunium System."
Snoke: "Good, then we will crush them once and for all. Go, prepare the weapon."

(Hux gives Kylo a smug look and then leaves to chamber).

And earlier at The Resistance base:

Poe: "Snap's reconnaissance flight confirmed Finn's report."

    (Shows image of SKB).

It's all there, and it's not hard to spot. And no, it's not any less well-explained than ANH imo.

Oh I'm not saying it isn't there. I'm stating that it's poorly written and is unsophisticated plotting. They are talking about a scout ship, never seen, being tracked by something, never seen. It's just a really lazy way of writing and kind of plagues the entire film.

Since the question's been answered, and the thread is just going to become another lazy "criticize TFA here!" thread... locking.
