Is the Count's name something like John Dooku... Is there a Family of Dooku's out there (Yes I know he inheirits his family wealth)? Or is it his only name, Like Yoda or Cher? Perhaps it's a name he was given by the Jedi Like Obi-wan or Qui-gon?

    Thoughts....

I always figured it was just his name. Typically, nobility of our world (very unsure about nobility of the SW world, if there is a nobility) use just their first name after their title and then whatever number in line they are. Ex. King Louis XIV, Queen Elizabeth I, etc.

Therefore I surmised that Dooku was his first name going by that logic. His last name is a mystery to us, if he even has one.

As for the Jedi giving him a name... I didn't know they did that. I always figured Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn were their real names. I thought only the Sith renamed their followers (Sidious, Vader, Maul, etc.)

Where did this theory of Jedi names come from? I've been seeing it alot lately on the boards and there has never been anything in the movies or EU to make me thing that they get a new name. ?[face_plain]

I think it's mostly if you were taken at or near birth the Jedi would most likely name you...

It also keeps the old families from coming and looking you up. "Obi-wan... I'm your brother Owen... we used to call you 'Ben'"

How can a Jedi have a title?

I was under the impression that a Jedi can't own anything, except maybe his clothes and his lightsaber.

I'm guessing that Dooku is his last name, and while he was a Jedi his name was Dooku Gooddude or something. When he quit the Jedi, he went back to claim his rich family's estate, and he just so happened to be a Count of something.

Dooku is his name, that's it. Dooku may very likely be Dooku XXI or something, it all depends on the culture he was born into. They may have only one name and no surname. This leads me to believe that Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon are from the same planet, their names are so alike. The title "Count" was 99% likely to be added after he left the Jedi. As Jedi cannot have material possessions, Dooku was not likely to have gotten hold of his family's cash until he handed in his robes and saber. As to what he is the count of, the most common response is Serreno, but that's kind of EU. From what I heard, the only reason Dooku's character is a count is because

    a) Lucas wanted to give him a very regal personality (Tyrannus does have its roots in "tyrant" with is Greek for "king")

    b) Christopher Lee has played Count Dracula in his Hammer Horror days and Georgie-Boy thought it would be fun to have a tribute to the "good old days". Lucas REALLY likes old films doesn't he?

Is Serrano in line with the Seperatists... Does Dooku "Rule" Serrano or again is the Count thing mainly honorary? How did Dooku learn of his heritage... Is A Jedi allowed to look up his family past, or was this part of Siddious's Manipulation?

I figured the "Count" was just an honorific used to show that he was head of the Separatists, and Dooku was his first name.
The dialog points towards it being a title. When he enters the hangar, there's the "Master Yoda" "Count Dooku" exchange, which is with titles (Unless Yoda's first name is "Master" :p). Afterwards, though, Yoda refers to him as "Dooku". Since Yoda refers to Obi-Wan as "Obi-Wan", it seems reasonable he'd refer to Dooku by his first name.

It appears that in the Star Wars galaxy that most individuals do have a first and last name, for example

    Obi-Wan Kenobi
    Qui-Gon Jinn
    Mace Windu
    Jango Fett
    Anakin Skywalker
    Padme-Amidala Naberrie
    Han Solo
    Lando Calrissian
    Boba Fett

And these persons are mainly addressed by their first names.

Now with that said, there are very few individuals who as we know have only one name, or at least addressed as such.
    And they are as follows:

    Yoda
    Dooku
    Palpatine

We only hear these three addressed as

    Master Yoda
    Count Dooku
    Senator(TPM)/Chancellor Palpatine(AOTC)

In most cases, it is the combination of a title with an individuals last name that used is customary, even in the Star Wars universe.

    In the US, we say,

    President(title) Bush(last name)
    Senator(title) Shelby(last name)
    Secretary of State(title) Powell(last name)

So with these examples in mind, other than Yoda, I have to believe that Dooku and Palpatine are last names.

    Darth Sin!

Then there is Jabba... But he's got three names (and the last two are not "the" and "Hutt")
