One band to rule them all, Dream Theater.

They have been my favorite band since 1993, and I'm going to see them again in concert
    in Berkeley in July!

    find them.
    listen to them.

    Too prog.

    Good guitar solos though.

Dream Theater kicks ass. But I wouldn't call them the best band out there. IMHO their vocals could be better. But you will be hard pressed to find many instrumentalists who are better than them.

And live while they have incredible stamina there are bands that are equally tight and technical with more youthful enthusiasm. Dillinger Escape Plan for example.

Saw D.E.P. with DT in fact at Gigantour 2 years ago. DT destroyed them, and even Megadeth who was headlining the show with DT

Heavy Prog, SLG. You might like their more recent stuff.

I saw John Pettrucci and Mike Portnoy at the G3 show a couple months back. Those are two of the finest muscians I've ever seen/heard. Great playing by them.

They're on a more mainstream label now for their new album due out in a couple months. I hope that doesn't change their sound any.

Overall, they're a really cool band.

Hardly the best band today. From the same kind of genre for example Polish group Riverside is a lot better.

Matter of opinion, Valkor. Personally I've been less than impressed with DT's theatrics as compared to other bands, but I'm willing to grant you that. However I do strongly feel that their vocalist is terrible when compared to other prog metal acts like Between the Buried and Me.

Angus, the new Dream Theater album got a good review at allmusic.com. Personally I think Roadrunner is a good choice for them.

In terms of original Prog Rock, I don't think Dream Theater can come close to

I didn't know Derek Smalls from Spinal Tap was in the original Genesis...

I got to agree with r_w in that Dream Theater plays amazing live, but they're also boring as hell to watch. Well except for Mike Portnoy, who is the most charismatic drummer I've ever seen, it's really hard to keep your eyes off him.

Yeah. He's crazy and one of my favorite drummers. I'm still impressed by the intro to Honor Your Father.
