Alright, the way I say this question may not make sense, please bear with me.

Blade weapons require you to use force to cut. If you put a knife to your hand, you'll have to physically push it into your hand for it to cut. (Unless it's a SUPER sharp knife)

My impression of Lightsabers is that they cut through pretty much anything, except for a select few materials.

But the lightsaber blade does not require actual force to push it through an object. For example a Jedi would recieve no feedback when he cut through a person, it would be like the person was never there, the lightsaber would cut through them like a hot knife through butter.

    Is this a correct assumption?

And this leads into my Title question. If you ignited a lightsaber and dropped it blade downward into the dirt, would it keep falling all the way to the center of the planet? Or would the ground provide resistance to it, and slow it down untill it eventually stops?

No . . . momentum began its descent, but it's encountering some measure of friction before disolving through. Incremnetally, it'll will slow. Further more, the only weight is a negliable pommel; it can rotate as it drops. Moreover, some materials slow a saber's passage; the cut effect isn't always instananeous.

Where is a scan of a lightsaber sticking in the wall when you need one...

Also, as has been stated many times over on the Wizards of the Coast SW RPG stie, The lightsaber does indeed encounter resistance, and it does indeed require strength to force the blade through objects. Watch TPM again. When Qui-Gon Jinn is cutting through the Blast door on the trade Federation ship, he has to exert himself to force the blade through. It takes both time and effort to cut through. It isn't like a hot knife cutting through butter. A lightsaber will cut through almost anything, but is still requires effort.

Now, as for a lightsaber plunging into the ground, and continuing on forever goes, this too would not happen because the handguard would stop it. Remember, it is wider than the blade.

Vader's sabre did a good job of cutting the gangway when he through it at it in RotJ. But Yoda's sabre did stay in that Clonetroopers chest for a while

It would stop. SOme materials offer more eristance, so at somepoint the sabre will slant (Richt word?) and stop.
Apart from that, there is the handle so get stuck in the hole.
