What are the distinct advantages of wielding two Lightsabers over one? What are the disadvantages? And vice versa?

Personally, if you were to go into combat, which style would you use? Single lightsaber or two?

If I used two sabers, one would be a standard/dual phase saber and the other would be a short saber. One saber would be better overall though.

I've fenced on and off for a few years now, and kendo for about the same amount of time, I know enough to be flexible with different styles and variations of swordplay and to come up with on the play strategy.

Edit: I neglected to put the advantages and disadvantages of single and double saber, but it has been taken care of by now.

The in-universe answer versus the out of universe answer.

Using two lightsabers allows a greater defensive and offensive ability for a Jedi Knight whom has mastered the style of using two sabers. The problem is that its more limited in many respects as to what moves you can use and far less versatile. Thus, a seasoned master like Dooku can have a distinct advantage over a Jedi like Anakin even if he benefited from two sabers.

I'd have to say one would be most efficient. Two thousand or more years of armed combat on Earth would leave me to believe that one sword is the best, though, of course, in rare occurences, we see guys running around with two, like samurai. But I think even they only used the second sword when they had too.

I think the only way two swords would be better is in the hands of an absolute expert. And in that case, it's probably not gonna matter how many you have, because, well, you're a freakin expert.

Wouldn't the person, in a blade struggle with a single saber have the strength advantage over one who uses two lightsabers?

yeah, but the person with the single saber would have to be careful not the exert too much strength and throw off his/her center of balance in case the user with two saber decides to do something tricky.

I'd wager using dual short lightsabers might give a dual lightsaber user an advantage over the full sized version.

For a real-life comparison, it's like the kodachi compared to the Katana. A wielder can use two katana's at the same time, but the weight and speed is bad. Kodachi's however are a mid-sized sword, sometimes called the 'shield blade' since it's very good at defense and is very good one handed. So, two kodachi's have a chance at beating a slower, full sized katana wielder.

Yeah, the dual swords would definitely be a lot harder to defend against and attack, but a single sword would provide more strength and control. I figure.

I agree with one of the above posters: Two swords is only worth the effort if it's being wielded by an expert/master of the style. Otherwise, stick with one....which is probably what I'd do.

After all, if two sabers were so inherently superior, every Sith Lord would be dual-wielding, and a lot more Jedi would be, as well.

Yeah, you'd better be top notch with a one sword style before even attempting to learn let alone fight with a two sword style.

Two sword fighting is fun to do, and it looks cool, but it burns up a lot of energy if you aren't careful( my real world experience there). Any Jedi or Sith who does the two saber thing needs to get a quick kill hit, or have a lot of endurance if they are fighting a long duel.

Nice acronym with the kodachi and the katana compared to the short-lightsaber and the normal sized lightsaber?

Oh, and Double-Bladed Lightsabers should only be used in ceremonies, and not in real combat. Anyone know why?

Lightsaber and arm-mounted energy shield. The only way to go.

Darth Maul gives you the lie.

It's a bo staff that can't be used to it's full extent. I'm sure there are better answers than that though. It'd be cool,or interesting to have a force sensitive character with a bo staff that has been treated to withstand a saber, and take melee combat to the next level.

    against blasters - two lightsabers
against a duelist - one lightsaber
against multiple opponents - double bladed lightsaber

That's one of the answers, yeah. The Double-Bladed lightsaber is inherently inferior to the single-bladed design because the user's reach, attack power, defense, and speed are cut in half, and the user has to worry about not cutting themselves in half while wielding it. Darth Maul, if the duel between himself, Obi-wan, and Qui-gon would have been absolutely destroyed facing a single bladed user. Qui-Gon and/or Obi-wan would have exploited the Double Bladed Lightsaber's weaknesses and absolutely kicked his butt...if the fight wasn't choreographed.

The only person who wielded an DBL decently is Exar Kun, it's inventor.

    Because CBF hates them? :D

Seriously because they restrict your movement, limit you to holding the saber diagonally or horizontally and make you liable to slice yourself in half.

...no, against multiple opponents it is still the single-bladed lightsaber's game. As I listed, the Double Bladed Lightsabers speed, reach, and overall power is cut in half compared to the single hilt.

Of course Exar Kun's saber is even worse than Maul's due to the short hilt. Maul's hilt was originally the same but Ray Park asked for it to be changed.

True. Bad defense, poor thrusting ability, and a huge unprotected target area right around where your chest/throat/face are. It takes away the key advantages of a staff or lance, being range and the power to overwhelm a swordsman's block. Nevertheless, it's capable of delivering very fast cuts, and when spun overhead or across the body, is very intimidating, considering how easily a lightsaber cuts.

No offence Saiya, but Maully seemed to handle a double-bladed saber quite well, considering Ray Park has a background in martial arts.

And even though there would be a lot of moves in single saber combat that you would have to unlearn, there are things that you could do with a lightstaff that you couldn't do with an ordinary lightsaber.

There's moving each blade back and forward while you hold it by the middle, kinda like what they did in "Duel" that old show Gladiators. You can also PUSH your opponent away with the blades and push TWO people away as well.

You can also hold it vertically and fight that way and twirl it around so the blade is on an angle and the guy you're fighting has to step back, giving you ground.

As for fighting with two lightsabers, that would be considerably harder than with a single one even though you can attack with one blade and then defend with the other. The only Jedi we have seen doing this in the films is Anakin, and that wasn't for very long either time. Grevious doesn't count.

Except that's not how it works. It doesn't matter what you think, the Double Bladed Lightsaber has benefits that's aren't immediately apparent. Maybe Darth Maul uses absorb/dissapate energy or special gloves to use it like a bo staff. We don't know.

There were a few Jedi in the background that can be seen wielding dual sabers, but that was against blaster wielding droids and not against another saberist.

All in all, a single lightsaber with a skilled user behind it is the best option.

I agree, except in the rare event where two sabers(one standard and one short, that's what i'd use) is needed.
