    grr. stupid enter button.

    anyways,
If you've seen sci-fi's versions of these two films, which do you prefer?

the Children of Dune "movie" is actually Dune Messiah and Children of Dune as one flick.. whereas the first is just the first novel.

I prefer Children of Dune myself. I think the storyline with Leto is better formed than the story of Mau'dib in the first one. Although, I wish there was some foreshadowing to God Emperor of Dune.

    et toi?

yech! i thought the second one was REALLY aweful! the first one was okay...but only because of its marked improvement over the movie.

Really? You didn't like the second one? Why not?
I thought that it showed better character development compared to the original, although the transition from the first part to the second and third wasn't the greatest. The only thing Children of Dune needed, in my opinion, was background on House Corrino (seeing how not a bit was mentioned in the first movie save the Emperor).

    well several reasons really

1: i have it on my computer, and the for some reason with the video format it would randomly go to black and white for a while...which really got on my nerves

2: i could hardly recognize some of the characters from the previous movie, they had changed so much it was hard to tell...

3: there was no good way to hide paul being the old blind preaching guy (cant remember what they called him)

4: when paul went blind it wasnt like it was described in the book

and well i can go on and on, but its a whole lot of little things

2: i could hardly recognize some of the characters from the previous movie, they had changed so much it was hard to tell...
Well, true enough. I think that Gurney looked way too old in the series compared to his prior part. Then again, I don't think the same actors were used for him and H'stillgar (sp?). It took me a moment or two to realize who certain people were. And it actually took me a good while to realize who Duncan Idaho gola was. [face_blush]

3: there was no good way to hide paul being the old blind preaching guy (cant remember what they called him)
Yeah, that was pretty obvious. He was referred to as "The Preacher" in the novels if I remember correctly. There was a bit more mystery about him that wasn't adapted to the film. I think that the movie solely relied on the scene where the shai-hulud falls (or nearly) on Mau'dib to show he was dead, or make it look so. And it didn't.

4: when paul went blind it wasnt like it was described in the book
Well, yeah, I can't argue with that.

Good points. I guess I can see why.. although, as a movie, I think it followed the novels better than the first. With the first, there was so much dialog from Caladan that was either moved to the move to Arrakis or on Arrakis itself. That bothered me a lot. And, in Dune, Paul knew his father was going to die, unlike in the movie. That bothered me a lot.

I haven't seen Children of Dune (not the whole thing anyway) ... but I'd still say Dune. I caught one of the 3 parts (I forgot which) and I could barely recognize the characters.

I mean, yeah, it was cool, but I like continuity.

Despite the fact that sci-fi did the annoying thing of trying to cram two novels into one mini-series (thus giving my favorite book of the series, Dune Messiah, the short end of hte stick), I still thought COD was better than the first one. It had better acting, better character development, and the 2nd and 3rd books always did have a more moving story IMHO. The mini-series reflected that pretty well.

I had reservations at first about making Leto II and Ghanima portrayed as young adults, but thinking about it, I realized how god-awful this series would have been had they cast child actors for the roles. So, it was no big deal.

That and Jessica Brooks is hot as ****.

    Still, Daniela Amavia is teh [face_love] [face_love] [face_love] [face_love] [face_love]

    CoD...no doubt about it.

You are referring to the Sci-Fi channel version of Dune, not that David Lynch abomination from the eighties, right? Well, either way, my choice is CoD

I liked CoD better. But I also liked the original Dune movie better than the Sci Fi version, so take my opinion for what it's worth.

I have only seen Children of Dune. It was all right, but it didn't hold my interest like I thought it would. I am still a MAJOR Dune n00b so...my opinion probably doesn't matter.

I think COD is better. It had better story development, better music, better effects, and better actors. I can see how it is hard to tell the characters apart though. I had read the books and it took me a while to figure everyone out.

    I liked 'Children of Dune' better because;

    More character development
    Fantastic deep storyline
    More epic in scope
    Greater visual effects

Beggars can't be choosers. The SCI-FI channel did a pretty good job on both IMHO. At least someone out there is willing to make SCI-FI mini-series.

'Children of Dune' (CoD) is a thousand times better than 'Dune'. Good God, I still can't believe it was the same Paul and Chani throughout both mini-series. In the first mini-series, those two suck, they really need acting lessons (and Chani desparately needs an English tutor :p). But in CoD, I absolutely adore Paul and Chani. Wow, maybe they took a crash course in acting. Or maybe because now they're acting their age, so it's more natural (unlike in the first mini-series, where they try to pretend to be teenagers :p).

That said, CoD still has it's weaknesses, particular the second and third parts (which were the actual adaptations of the CoD novel). The first part though (adaptation of 'Dune Messiah') was pretty much flawless for me. I still can't believe the writer and director also saw the parallels betwen Mario Puzo's "The Godfather" and "Dune Messiah", just like me. LMAO, it felt as if I wrote the script. Check out the great Godfather refrences, like the kiss Paul gave to Irulan (similar to Michael kissing Fredo in 'Godfather part 2', I almost expect Paul to say "I know it was you, Irulan. You broke my heart!" [face_laugh]) and of course, the montage at the end when Stilgar and his Fremen kill all of Muaadib's enemies.

Speaking of that montage, lovely music, and great song called "Inama Nushif" composed by Brian Tyler, who himself is a Dune fan (the song was performed by some singer from Iran, if I'm not mistaken, with Tyler playing the percussions himself). He did all the research himself to make that song, even the director was shocked at how much effort he put into the project. Wonderful stuff, the only music in 2003 that can match Howard Shore's ROTK soundtrack :D

I also love the new actors replacing the previous ones. The new grown up Alia...sigh, Daniela Amavia is hot, enough said [face_love] The new Jessica is wonderful, even if you expect her to say "Resistance is futile!" in some scenes ;) I also love the new Stilgar, he seems like a fiery religous fanatic, unlike the one in the Dune mini-series (that guy looked like the Fremen version of Homer Simpson :p).

Thankfully, they didn't change the best aspect of the first mini-series: Julie Cox as Irulan. Whenever I read those intros to the chapters of the 'Dune' novel (the ones Irulan wrote), I always hear Cox's voice. The expanded role for Irulan in the 'Dune' miniseries was the best change made, and in CoD her role was even better (especially in the first part). Perfect, just perfect (Cox also is probably the only memeber of the cast who have read the Dune books before being casted, no wonder she looked like she knew what she was doing, unlike some of the others who looked confused. 'Course, some might be confused because they're Czech actors who don't understand English [face_laugh]).

Anyway, I'll end it here, this post is alreay too long [face_laugh] Again, I say that CoD is waaaaay better than the first mini-series.

I loved the book Dune, but haven't seen the series. Loved the Children of Dune series, haven't read the book yet.
