And they don't even do a good job of it. If you're going to copy someone, why not do a good job?

    Pearl Jam ripping off Nirvana?

    Now I'm confused.

Earshot rips off Tool so "Earshot/Tool"
Creed rips off Pearl Jam so "Creed/Pearl Jam"

    Does that help?

Tool cannot be copied. It took King Crimson to match them on stage for pure ingenuity. Earshot screwed themselves the minute they tried, unfortunatley. But hey, you never know, when Rush started they were sort of Zepp wannabe, but they evolved quite well. And who can forget Wierd Al's early Slayer-esque sound...

I love Tool... they're easily my favorite band. Coming to Florida on August 4th too!

The only thing I have against them is that their song is named Forty Six & 2, when it should've just been 42.

edit: Sorry, I just realized how lame that was.

It's purposly supposed to be 46&2, don't you know about the 46&2 thoery? It's what the whole song is based on.

I've heard of it before... something about evolution of animals from some sort of grid? I'm not an expert, obviously.

But it was a joke, sorta... do you know the 42 theory?

I have a good intrepretation of the song, i'll dig it up and post it for you. It's pretty far fetched, but still makes for interesting reading none the less.

Yes, I actually do know about the 46&2 theory. I've actually read the book that it is based on, it's called "Nothing in this book is true, but it's exactly how everything is" by bob fissel.

    Anyway, here's that intrepretation:

I don't think the majority of people really understand the depth of Tool's music. I also think their music is pretty hard to get into if you don't understand what it's about.

Now this song is probably one of my favorite songs by Tool. Before I can give an interpretation, I have to give some background information:

"Some of the ideas behind this song are based on the teachings of Drunvalo Melchizadek." All this info can be found in the Tool FAQ at toolshed.down.net. In brief, Mechizadek believes that we humans are at a disharmonic level with our 44+2 chromosomes. Supposedly, early man had 42+2. Melchizadek believes that the next evolutionary step is 46+2 chromosomes, and goes on to say that when we reach this step, all of our consciousnesses will intertwine to form a higher being and a new level of harmony.

The whole thing with the "shadow" is based on the theories of Carl Jung. Jung expanded on Freud's "ego" theory by stating that the ego, or one's sense of self, comes at the expense of certain characteristics that are rejected by the individual as being "not self". These rejected characteristics come together to form sort of a "counter-ego" which Jung called a person's "shadow". This 'shadow' "represents everything about ourselves that we fear and despise."

    Now, my interpretation:

In the opening lines, he's stating that right now he's not satisfied with life and he's beginning to look inside himself in the hopes of coming up with some answers. He mentions "muscles" several times in the song and I have yet to figure that part out.

"I've been crawling on my belly
    Clearing out what could've been.
I've been wallowing in my own confused
    And insecure delusions
For a piece to cross me over
Or a word to guide me in.
I wanna feel the changes coming down.
I wanna know what I've been hiding in.. ..my shadow"

"Clearing out what could have been" means he's forgiving himself of past mistakes he's made. He's trying not to sit there like so many of us do and feel angry with himself for some of the decisions he's made. "I've been wallowing in my own confused and insecure delusions" I think most of us can identify with this line. Due to insecurity, confusion about emotions and such, our vision of reality is clouded and we lack clarity of thought. All the lines from "For a.." to "..my shadow" is telling of how he's setting out on a mission of self-exploration looking for answers within himself; trying to sort things out in his mind. He's saying that he's trying to explore his "shadow" or all those characteristics of himself that he's repressed, or that he hides. At this point, I'd like to say that I think the shadow also represents insecurity ("confused and insecure delusions"), in that insecure people don't view themselves as the friendly outgoing type of person. Therefore, the friendly outgoing aspect of their personality is subconsciously repressed.

The next few lines basically repeat the theme of the song.

"I wanna feel the change consume me,
    Feel the outside turning in.
I wanna feel the metamorphosis and
    Cleansing I've endured within"

He's at a point where he simply doesn't want things to stay as they are. He's willing to dive into this, he wants to "feel the change consume" him. This is in contrast to Reznor's ambivalent lyrics, such as "maybe I don't have a choice, and maybe that is all I have, and maybe this is a cry for help" where he is unsure of what he wants to commit to, so he remains in a state of confusion. This state of confusion is the very thing Keenan is trying to escape. The "metamorphasis" fits in with the 46+2 concept of change or evolution.

    "Listen to my muscle memory.
Contemplate what I've been clinging to.
Forty-six and two ahead of me."

Again, I'm not sure what "muscle memory" is referring to. "Contemplate what I've been clinging to"

That is one of TOOL's best songs.

Although the theory of 42 is much more interesting, intriguing, and though-provoking.
