I just saw a GREAT behind-the-scenes show on the AMERICAN MOVIE CLASSICS cable channel about the making of Edward Scissorhands. It was beautiful to see where it came from, what it meant to Tim Burton, how it came from his teenage alienation and loneliness. He first drew a picture of the character EDWARD when he was in high school. The outsider that's misunderstood, that seeks acceptance. It's Tim Burton's most personal movie.

    After BATMAN's success,
Burton got to make the movie with total freedom. Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. were originally considered for the lead role, but Burton went with Johnny Depp who instantly identified with a character that was misunderstood because of his appearance. The legend of 50s horror, Vincent Price played the part of Edward's creator and since Burton had idolized him since childhood, he was thrilled.

It was hilarious to see Johnny Depp talking about the problems he had going to the bathroom wearing that suit and those big, heavy scissorhands!!! [face_laugh]

Danny Elfman's music, which he at first thought was a failure, has turned out to be his most celebrated and imitated soundtrack score.

I love EDWARD SCISSORHANDS. Goofy, but fun and touching. A great fairy tale from Tim Burton.
    :)

Yeah, they mentioned in the TV show that when the movie first came out, some people saw the poster with the sharp scissored-hands and thought it was some kind of a gothic horror film. There was some confusion on the part of the public about that.

They had footage in the TV show of Winona Ryder being interviwed. She was 18 when SCISSORHANDS was filmed. She said it was a unique experience. The fact that she and Johnny Depp were a couple at that time made for PERFECT casting and chemistry. :)

I had just got my driver's license when the film came out and one of my first dates was to take a girl to see EDWARD SCISSORHANDS.
She loved it and got caught up in the romantic fairy tale aspect of it. Made for a great evening. :)

Thraxwhirl, lol, it's funny you should ask that question. Caroline Thompson, who wrote the script for the movie, said early on when Tom Cruise was flirting with the idea of playing EDWARD, he brought up this question. Caroline and Burton didn't want to deal with this, didn't care about it, "didn't want to go there." It just didn't seem important to the movie. I think it's one of the reasons Tom Cruise didn't get the role.

I would never watch anything with Depp when I was little because I was so afraid of Edward. It completely ruined my childhood lol. I would never go into a Blockbuster because I didn't want to see the box cover.

It [How Ed goes to the toilet] just didn't seem important to the movie. I think it's one of the reasons Tom Cruise didn't get the role.

I disagree, and agree holehartedly with Tom Cruise. It's bloody important.

Sorry, I don't want to be seen as flaming - I love Jonny Depp, he's one of the finest actors on the PLANET - but that film just didn't hold water for me. I couldn't get my head around the notion that some burk had not only designed a guy with scissors for hands, but that the poor individual had to wet his pants five or six times a day for fear of emasculating himself, and apparently that's unimportant!!! Were I in his place, I cannot think of a single factor in my life that could POSSIBLY be more important.

It's just a movie, and not a particularly realistic film either, it is a fairy tale. ;)
Lighten up! The end of the movie has an explanation for snow that probably wouldn't pass muster with any meterologist, lol.

    According to the story...
    The scisssors were temporary,
    but the creator died before
he could give Edward his hands.

It's okay if you don't like the movie.
Every movie isn't for everyone. :)

This was such a bizarre movie, but in a good way. I love the character, how he is a mute and has scissors on his hands. Totally illogical.
