Does anyone have a good idea for doing the endor poncho? The biggest thing is trying to figure out what type of paints to use. Do they make a spray fabric paint? That seems to be the easiest way to do it. Thanks. -Dan S_S edit -- just unlocking!
An Endor poncho would be cool. I would start with a tan or light olive-drab for the poncho itself. And yes, they do make spray fabric paints. Good Luck!
Another way to do it, and then you don't have to worry about the spray give away, is to sponge dye it. Materials: Rit Dye (or whatever kind of cloth dye you want) Sponges (you won't be able to use them for anything else again, ever, so make them pretty cheap) Large Sheet of Plastic (bigger than cloth) Rubber Kitchen Gloves (unless you want camo hands) Vinegar Big Plastic Pan/Bucket (might stain so be careful) Basically, it's like tie-dying. You just spread the plastic out in the grass (I wouldn't do this indoors because of the likelihood of mistakes/accidents) put the fabric on it and use the sponges w/ the various types of dye and sponge the pattern onto the fabric, let it dry a while, use the vinegar and water to set the dye for about 2 hours, rinse it out real good and then wash it (w/o anything else) a few times in the washing machine.
I was considering doing this poncho as an "easy" costume to wear when maybe I didn't want to be in such a formal costume. Does anybody know if the poncho is cut in a circle or is it more of a square? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
I was planning on making this as well, to make a 3rd costume out of my Luke ROTJ! Is there a pattern for this? I'm also trying to figure out what type of belt does Luke have over it. It looks like some sort of military-type that I've seen at a surplus store before. I'm also contemplating what the best material to use. I'm thinking cotton canvas, or something along that line.
Cotton Canvas does sound good. I'm not sure about the belt. I'll have to look at Luke's more closely. I've bee researching on the princess leia one. The colors are very drab olive very camo. I think the "hood" or the neck thing is just a tube that is scrunched around. It just gives it the illusion of a hood that could be used, even though we don't see that. On to more research.
I seem to remember a photo of George with Carrie as she tried on the poncho BEFORE it was painted, and she had the hood on over the helmet. I guess to see if it was big enough to put over the helmet, just in case they needed it for some scenes. Anyone have that pic?
I tried this one before, but I'm going to redo it because I wasn't as skilled when I did it so it was a bit crappy, but... The hood is actually a regular hood, it's best to fit the hood, smaller around the neck, not gathered, and it must fit over the helmet. There is a circular piece that is sewn around the traditional opening of the hood front and there'd a hole in that that goes over the head. Note that you can see a seam along the 'flat' circle that rests along the top and everything underneath gathers up because it's more volume. http://rebelshaven.com/Images/Leia/Leia07.JPG As crappy as this quick illustration is, just gives you an idea about the "circle": http://rebelshaven.com/VersCorner/images/starwars/endorponcho/hooddrawing.jpg Also, a cotton poplin works best for this. If you wet the poncho fabric so it's damp but not soaking, and you take a spray bottle filled with a dye mixture (I used two shades of green and two shades of brown) spray onto the wet fabric. The fabric being wet will allow the dye to 'creep' or spread out, so it's a mottled splotchiness. I'd say do one color, let dry, wet again and go to the next so it doesn't all blend into one mottled mess. http://rebelshaven.com/Images/ROTJ/ROTJ027.jpg Note there is also a seam near the arm. Hope that helps! I'm going to be doing this one myself sometime in the next year or so, wish I kept the first draft of the poncho I did.
Thanks for the great pictures. I might be going to get the fabric for this over the weekend. It depends on what is going on around the house. So there are seems on both arms then? I would think so due to the fact that it's pretty much a symmetrical piece.
I second the poncho pattern question... can anyone tell me what color the trim is on the side of the pants? Is it a light yellow or blue?
