Trying to introduce future wife to Star Wars (she was born after ROTJ). So, as we were watching ESB, I was just wondering if he believes Luke lived or not given that Vader's "body language" and tone seemed to suggest that he was very disappointed. Sure he knows that Luke is a young Jedi, but as we see in ROTJ, Sidous is thrown into what appears to be a bottomless pit within the Death Star that obviously kills him.

If he does believe that he lives, wouldn't he use his countless storm troopers search a now vacant cloud city?

Then Vader obviously senses him while Luke is recovering on the Falcon.

While he is on the star destroyer, Vader says, through the force, "Luke come with me. It is your desssssssssssssstiny." I think its fair to assume he knows Luke survived, and he and the emporer discuss that it will take the two of them to turn Luke.

Vader would have felt his death in the Force. He didn't though. He knew Luke would attempt to meet up the Falcon. Vader regrouped and attempted to capture the Falcon on his Destroyer.

Exactly. Vader would have known if Luke had died and therefore began searching for him in the most likely place for him to be.

Not to mention that the TIE fighters probably at least reported the Falcon diving under the city. Donno if they were close enough to see Luke get picked up, but they obviously up to them bare moments later.

Vader would be able to tell within a second if Luke died or not through the force. His dissapointment body movement merely suggests that he was hoping that Luke would join him after his confession. Instead he sees Luke does not take the news so well and instead flings himself as far as he can from Darth Vader.

As others have said, Vader knows Luke survived because he communicates with him throughout the force. Also, he believes Luke has a destiny, and therefore it is the forces will that he completes it. The force finds convienent ways of keeping people alive until their destiny is completed. It just so happens Luke is pulled into one of the escape vents and falls directly onto the small hangers instead of falling into space.

And where would he look if Luke was dead?

But yes, Vader would have felt it in the Force.

Luke's fall was unnatural...if Mace Windu, a Jedi Master with many years of experience, cannot concentrate enough to adjust his fall when his hands are cut off, Luke certainly couldn't when he was missing a hand, and having to deal with the single greatest cliffhanger in movie history, regarding his parentage...Perhaps Vader assisted Luke's trajectory so that he landed relatively safely in that trash tunnel, which would obviously indicate that he knew Luke survived his fall, at least temporarily.

Don't you think that Mace was stunned/paralyzed/already dead when he got pushed out of Palpatine's office window? We just don't see the *splat* on screen.

Luke chose to jump, unassisted by Vader.

We don't know which way the currents were blowing in the shaft - coulda been blowing upwards making Luke's fall slower. Luke coulda been flaling about like a plastic bag in the wind.

Lukey is a teensy bit heavier than a plastic bag ;)

Doesn't the ESB novel mention that Vader guided Luke into the hatch? At least I think I've read that somewhere.
