A few of us have discussed this elsewhere-but I think it deserves it's own thread.

While watching the Emmys last night I was shocked to see how reminiscent Oprah's dress looked to Padme's Picnic dress. Granted not exact, but the overall color and style is VERY similar. MrsMayim has a great pic, I'll get her to post it on this thread :)

Kay_Deenoted that Gwen Stefani's wedding dress was quite similar to Padme's Pastel Lake dress. Gwen's Gown

Maggie at the Padawan's Guide has posted a few more Celebrity Similarities to Padme's fashions.
Queen Mum's Wedding Gown looks like Padme's *Granted this may have influenced the costume, and not been inspired by :)

Shania Twain dresses like Padme, too

She had a pic of Mandy Moore at an awards show wearing a dress like the Pastel dress-I can't find the picture, but when I do I will post it.

What do ya'll think? Do you think that the celebrities request their gown reflect the style and feel of a certain movie gown, or are movie costumes influencing fashion? Or do you think, like in the case of the Queen Mum's dress, more often movie's costumes are inspired by star's fashions?

If you have any other examples Please post the pics or links here.

    Ferd :)

Jedi Dragon I do agree that the Shania Twain one is not very close--but the color, mock turtleneck, headband, and skin showing are what makes them seem similar. Out of all the ones I mentioned that is probably the farthest stretch. You should check out the others.

Here's the link to the Mandy Moore dress that I mentioned above

I have a feeling in the case of Mandy Moore and Oprah it may have been the designer that was inspired by the costumes in the movie. Gwen seems like she's a little more adventerous with her fashion, so I wouldn't be surprised if she requested that her wedding gown was dyed this way.

I have also noticed that the fall collection at the clothing store bebe features a lot of peasant blouses with corsets over them. (a la picnic dress) Unfortunately I think I threw out the ad so I don't have a scan. I wonder if the movie infulenced the fashion here?

Glad I wasn't the only one who thought that about Oprah's dress. That was my very first impression of it- It's the Picnic Dress!

I have thought it funny that there have been some either Star-Wars inspired
Celerbrity outfits. Though maybe it's the other way around! I think Shania's blue outfit was pre-AOTC. The color, turtleneck, and headband are remarkably similar to Padme's blue outfit!

    And here's Mandy's dress:

It's different from the Pastel Lake dress,
    but reminiscent nonetheless!

I have to say that I have doubt that most were inspired by starwars, but perhaps inspired by the same thing starwars dresses were?

As hard as it is to believe to us since SW is so huge to us, it doesn't mean jack squat to most of the rest of the world, and I have a hard time believing so many designers are being inspired by it.

Maybe that's just me being negative again though...*shrug*.

Oh my Gosh! It's true, film does influence fashions. All I saw in the shops last summer were not so usual versions of Padme's Ep2 dresses. I kept on seeing tones of dip dyed chiffon numbers, little yellowy embroidered corsets and I even found my self buying a white linen dress that looked surprisingly like Padme's Naboo night dress. I still can't walk into Debenhams without seeing some gold flower dress style embroidery on a nightdress.

If you look it's been happening a lot lately, when LOTR was first out lots of gypsy style tops and cropped trousers started to appear in high street shops and after Moulin Rouge there were corsets everywhere.

Films definitely influence fashion. I also noticed the 'Moulin Rouge' effect everywhere, and it doesn't surprise me to see Padme type dresses turning up. After all, movies are hugely popular, it's not like this was some little cult flick that nobody saw, or that had totally unremarkable clothes!! :)

Movies and TV influence a lot of things. Certain styles like the Leia Buns, or a woman wearing a necktie like in Annie Hall, or the Jennifer Aniston haircut in the first season of Friends become HUGE iconic styles that can be traced back to a movie or TV show. Heck, my name, Jennifer became hugely popular in the 70's when I was born, because of a certain character in the hit movie Love Story. I always had at least 6 Jennifers in each class. But now names such as Aerial, Jasmine, Emma and Rose make the list in Elementary schools.

Movies DO influence fashions and haristyles.
Even if a star doesn't know it as Padme's Flowered Naboo Picnic Dress costume P-19 in AOTC, they do know the renaissance reminiscent style that Star Wars did churn back up into popularity.

Just wait until Prom season, it will all be very Star Warsish this year.

Any Movie that makes money like Star Wars will be seen by all sorts of people, and those people design clothes, and give haircuts, and make fabric etc etc etc. That's how fashions trickle down into popularity.

    Ferd :)

Even on the MTV Movie awards (err something like that) I remember natalie Portman was there and they were criticizing every celebretie's clothing and other celebreties were talking about each other's clothing. When they go to what Natalie Portman was wearing they made good reviews and some of the celebrities said "Yeah I like what she wears especially in the Star Wars films" and guys were just going crazy for the Battle Outfit after it got scratched by the Nexu!

Natalie is indeed one of the best dressing celebrity people, that even other celebrity women want her wardrobe!
