Crash leaves 4 dead, 1 injured student
The youths, from Sahuarita High, collided head-on with another vehicle, officers say.

    Feb. 11, 2003
SAHUARITA - Four Sahuarita High Schools students died and one is in serious condition after a two-car, head-on collision here yesterday.

Five teens from the school were in a Toyota Camry that collided with a Suzuki Vitara driven by a woman authorities described as elderly.

Three of the youths - two boys and a girl, were pronounced dead at the scene, and a girl died later at University Medical Center. The three who died at the scene were ejected from the Toyota.

Student Jesus Amador, 19, the only survivor, was listed in serious condition at UMC. Amador's condition was upgraded from guarded to serious condition at about 7 last night.

Amador's father, Jorge Zaragoza, a Tucson construction worker, said his son had a broken arm, bruised ribs and a punctured lung.

"I didn't know what to feel when I was told about the accident," Zaragoza said. "I felt desperate. Suddenly nothing else was important."

The names of others involved in the collision were not released by the Pima County Sheriff's Department last night.

The elderly woman was in fair condition at Tucson Medical Center.

The collision occurred at about 3:15 p.m. on La Cañada Drive about a quarter-mile south of Helmet Peak and Sahuarita roads, said Chief George Good of Rural/Metro Fire Department. The accident was on the western boundary of Sahuarita.

It is unclear what directions the two vehicles were travelling, but Good described the collision as a "head-on type."

The scene of the head-on crash, in the middle of La Cañada Drive, south of Helmet Peak Road.

Sahuarita school district officials confirmed that the teens were Sahuarita High School students.

The posted speed limit is 50 mph, and Rural/Metro public information officer Corey Reed couldn't say whether either vehicle was speeding. He also couldn't comment on whether those in the two cars were wearing seat belts or if alcohol was involved. No citations have been issued in the accident.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Jay St. John, superintendent of Sahuarita School District, said last night that although he was told the teenagers were Sahuarita students, police had not confirmed the names for him.

"We're gathering counselors right now to help our students deal with this," St. John said. "We've had to deal with a fatal accident of a student before. About six years ago a student was killed in a car accident, but in that case we had a weekend to prepare to assist our students with the grieving process. This time we only have 12 hours, but we'll get through this."

St. John said Sahuarita's emergency response team is made up primarily of guidance counselors who have grief counselling training.

    The teens that were killed:
    Angelique "Angie" Redondo, 16
    Marc Briones, 18
    Andrea Burruel, 17
    Micheal "Mike" Barreda, 17

I had Angie and Marc in my classe. Marc was graduating this year after a struggle with drugs and being arrested.

Jesus "Chollo" Amador is paralyzed for the time being. He's going to have surgery. He has been moved down from ICU.

I can't cope with this. I loved Marc because of his humor and knew Angie. I just can't come to terms with this. I saw them just yesterday... I just can't believe this. No one could. At school, it was dead. We were all in the library, trying to cope. I just can't believe that they're gone. I can't think of Marc without wanting to cry.

They were not all ejected from the car. Only Andrea was.

Please pray for their families and the ones left behind.

    EDIT
    Here's another article:

Four Sahuarita High School students were killed Monday afternoon in a two-vehicle collision about a mile from campus.

Sheriff's officials said late Monday that the car with the students in it was traveling 20 mph over the speed limit and attempting to pass another vehicle when the crash occurred.

    The driver, Mark Briones,

Krystal, it is horrible when something like this happens...especially when it is to young people who have so much to look forward to in their lives.
This type of thing has happened a lot where I live because of a windy road that teenagers seem to think they can negotiate without trouble. We've had a star running back killed, a homecoming queen serioulsy injured so that she isn't the same any more.

I will keep the families in my prayers. Also, Krystal, feel free to PM me to talk about it. :(

I've had two friends killed in car accidents, one in 1999 and one just a few months ago. It's pretty rough.

And I'm going to tell you one thing: I hate reporters. They were swarming us, trying to get an interview while we cried.

I'm sorry about that too. The media can be total asses at the worst times.

The Camry was traveling 71 mph in a 50-mph speed limit zone

    mistake one

The force of the impact ejected two of the students from the Camry

    not wearing seat belts?

Part of a marijuana pipe was found inside the vehicle and the other part outside the car

    puffing and driving dont mix.

sorry to be cruel, and it is a terrible event to have happened. almost all the blaim lands on the driver, and i have no compassion for a person that would endanger others in such a way.

"Part of a marijuana pipe was found inside the vehicle and the other part outside the car

Nothing ever indicated than anyone was high. Don't make that assumption. Quite frankly, people who drive high usually do about 10 under the limit and are way more cautious whild driving. It's alcohol that inhibits wild, speedy driving.
