In the arena fight, two Jedi throw Anakin and Obi-Wan new lightsabers. Where did these extra lightsabers come from? I thought a Jedi made his own, personal weapon. I also thought it was one of the final tests of a Jedi to be able to make a lightsaber. So who made these extras and why?

Maybe they brought the lightsabers with them... or maybe they got it off one of the Jedi who were killed...

It's a safe bet that the younglings don't make their own, since the construction of sabers seems to be more of an advanced skill. If so, one could infer that there is a process for their manufacture.

Important lesson in life - always carry a spare.

Or maybe they were both really looking forward to some double-lightsabre swinging, but were ordered to give up their second sabres to Anakin and Obi-Wan ;)

I think it's safe to say that there are lots of extra lightsabres around, just in case they're needed. They're probably manufactured for a rainy day.

I would think that the lightsabre a Jedi carries around would be the one he/she put all the effort into, the one he/she loves best.

I agree. It's good to carry spares always which is what Anakin should have had in the factory when it got ruined. lol :D

It has always been my assertion that the concept of each Jedi having to design and create his/her own lightsaber is a romantic notion of swordsmanship created by modern Star Wars writers (WEG, Ballantine, Lucasbooks, etc) who latched onto the Vader's statement that making one's own lightsaber demonstrates a Jedi's skills are complete.

Artisans create weapons, while soldiers fight with them. Think of all the time wasted were each Jedi to reinvent the wheel in order to create their own lightsaber. A more realistic way of procuring lightsabers is to have them crafted and made by specialists: either Jedi artisans or an outside manufacturer. Besides, were one a Jedi, wouldn't he or she consider one made by an expert to be of superior quality than one of his own hand?

It's silly to think of a lightsaber as some magic wand, when, in fact, it is a rather basic instrument. Why else would Mos Eisley Cantina patrons barely blink an eye when Kenobi weilder his saber defending Luke.

There are a few Jedi in the arena with 2 lightsabers, the Jedi who threw their sabers probably also used 2.

Do Jedi's use two lightsabers? I know Anakin did, but is that normal?

I've seen many different sabers on web pages, based on EU, for each Jedi. Maybe these two brought their old padawan sabers just in case? I also like the idea that not all Jedi are too stupid to not carry a backup weapon... just in case :D

Having an extra lightsaber wouldn't be a good idea. If the extra saber somehow got unhooked, and fell into the wrong hands, it could be a dangerous weapon. I'm under the impression that Jedi rarely even have to use their lightsabers.

The wrong hands? Come on, who besides a sith could weild a lightsaber as well as a Jedi? Besides the fact a Jedi could take them in a fight, they could just force-pull the saber back to them. With all due respect...

I agree with about one thing, though... I'm also under the impression that the jedi don't often have to resort to violence.

Well, the Jedi know that the Sith have reappeared. If a Jedi had an extra lightsaber, a Sith could easily use "Force pull", and the Sith would now have an extra weapon. I don't think Jedi lose their lightsabers too often, and having a spare on hand seems like it'd be more of a hassle than a help.

I think it was just a bit of inniative on behalf of the Jedi to bring a couple of extra sabers knowing that one Jedi was there and they were about to enter into a huge battle.

Or how about they took the lightsabers off a few of the fallen Jedi in the arena?

The lightsabers were given to Obi-Wan and Anakin at the very start of the area battle. I didn't see any Jedi go down when they charged the droids.

Does it say anywhere that Jedi only build ONE lightsaber?

I could see part of the training as building multiple lightsabers to teach patience & consistency. Or they may have a small group of Jedi that just make lightsabers (kind of like a custom rifle maker today). The Jedi probably have an armory of spare lightsabers on hand for a SHTF scenario... :D

I think it's quite obvious the lightsabers Obi-Wan and Anakin were given were stolen from two other Jedi whom they didn't like much.

Bob and Jerry were their names. They didn't survive the arena battle ;)

That would suck, here you are deflecting enemy fire, then, someone pulls away your lightsaber...

-"oh, d*mn... Jerry, what happened to our sabers?"

-"I told you we should have brought spares (gets shot) Ughh..."

    -"poo doo....

I agree with what The_Anakin_Wannabe said. They probably brought a few spares because they knew Obi-Wan was there and in case they lost their own in a possible battle.

The extra lightsabers were actual replicas from the OT that Yoda had bought from Ebay. Good thing Mace didn't object to spending a small part of the Jedi budget on those extra lightsabers!

Does this really even need to be a topic?
Maybe you should change the name of this topic to "Sabers do what?!"

Nobody can force-pull an opponent's lightsaber away from them, or else that'd be the first thing they did in a duel.

"Nobody can force-pull an opponent's lightsaber away from them, or else that'd be the first thing they did in a duel"

Sure, if it's in their hands, it'll be hard to pull it away. However, if it was a spare that was dangling on their belt, I think it'd be easy for an opponent to pull it away.

I'm guessing the Jedi knew that if Obi-Wan et al had been captured, that they would not have been allowed to keep their sabers, hence, spares.

Also, if you look carefully in background shots of the arena battle, you will see other Jedi wielding two sabers.
