Greetings, messa new to the Boards, so if this was already discussed, please lock it up.

-In TJK Luke uses an extreme amount of Force to cloak their ship and then starts turning old and wrinkled, like Palps in ROTS
(it's still debatable if that's because of the reversed lightning by Mace, but that's oftopic).
-In NJO Onimi was a YvShaper who used the Force to control YV and stuff (again, how he became force-sensitive is oftopic), which altered him permanently (IMO like Palps)
-Anakin(Solo) again used Force battling hordes of YV super saiyan style, and in the end practicaly gloved/burned.

So I was thinking; does that happen to a being because there is to much force-enery used at once and the body can not control it (so it burns and/or ages), and if so, does it depends of force-potential (midiklorians and whatnot)? Like, maybe AnakinS wasn't powerful enough to survive, Palps aged and Luke(being the strongest) only suffered temporary demage.

    Discuss.

It probably depends on how the force is being used. If its being used for defence or subterfuge the power probably doesn't affect the body. When its used in an aggressive or dark side manner it would have body alterating qualities. But with Onimi, his disfiguration is caused by failed shaping of himself (or maybe YV react differently to use of the force.)

eg. Luke and Kyp in NJO both used massive amounts of the force to move singularities to destroy YV ships. Whilst tiring them out it did not affect there physical appearance (Probably because it wasn't a direct attack on an opponent IMO)

remember the Jedi Academ Trilogy? to force push a star destroyer fleet out of the Yavin System Lukes students acted as one, joining in a force melt and one as focus, Dorsk81 fired the push with the combined power of all students and luke at the stardetsroyers. they were successful but Dorsk81 diedbecause of that huge force use, burning out/up. this is another example of the force overuse.

it seems if, like with energy, the body can only take a certain ammount of energy, no matter if it is force energy or normal energy. like lightning kills a body or electricity, so does force overuse. depending on how much the being can take. thir soul can take lots more, but their body is limited, that´s why Obi Wan said, when letting go of his body in ANH that he will get more powerful than vader when joining the force. he can for some time stay a ghost and without any restrictions of the body (because he is only soul then) use the force in much greater ammounts than before. though most ghosts didn´t do that, but that has other reasons, I think, moral ones maybe.

PS: welcome to the boards and this is a nice topic you started ;)

    Great topic!!

Maybe I misunderstood what the writer was getting at in TUF, as I thought that Onimi shaped himself to be able to move stuff around & control the mind of Shimrra as in using heretic shaping tech - not by becoming force sensitive!!

My understanding of it was that he was using shaper tech to give himself telekinetic abilities & that he had shaped Shimrra to be under his control. I think I'm going to have to go back & re-read that part. Guess I was getting too excited by Jacen becoming uber powerful, Luke kicking ass & worrying about why Jaina was ignoring Jag!!

As for Anakin, I do think he burnt himself out - it was a very sad moment - I actually shed a tear or two over that one. I don't think it was down to him not being powerful enough, more that he was too young to be able to properly harness & control that much power.

I found the whole Luke looking like the emperor thing a little uncomfortable if I'm being honest. I hope they won't continue down that line. But, along the same lines as above, I don't think that Luke is not powerful enough to do that trick, more that he doesn't truly understand how that particular avenue of the force works, so therefore is not able to harness the power correctly, hence he ends up altering his appearance, albeit temporarily. He doesn't burn out because he has more experience of using the force & is more disciplined than Anakin would have been.

    Welcome to the boards, Astral_Bug!

I was watching the last episode of the new series of Doctor Who a month or two ago (I know this seems random at the moment but it does have relevance) and there is a point when Rose looks into the Time Vortex and absorbs its power, something that no one is meant to do. She starts to glow with a golden aura around her, and the energy starts to burn her up from the inside.
I think that when you absorb a lot of energy (whether it be the Force or the Time Vortex) the only way to handle this immense power is to act as a conduit, and not absorb it. Maybe this is what is meant by becoming one with the Force- channeling this energy like Jacen Solo did in TUF. Jacen knew that by surrendering himself to the Force, he could control the ravishing energy- and that he could not afford to tip the balance in this moment. He absorbed all of Onimi's venoms and neutralised them, acting as the lightsaber. But maybe absorbing it and acting with this incredible power (i.e using the Dark Side) can make you burn up inside, as you're supposed to be the conduit and not the vessel.

Those are just my thoughts on it, anyway.

The thing about the "new" view of the Force that bothers me is, why are the Jedi concentrating on harnessing their Darker emotions for power? I understand that Anger and Hatred will give you a quick boost of power (ask anyone who has ever been picked on in school and went off on his tormentor-;-)) BUT are not the positive emotions of Love and Compassion just as powerful?

Has anyone heard the story of how a mother gained superhuman strength and lifted a car to save her child?

    THATS what I'm talking about.

It seems to me the OJO's problem was that they didn't use their emotions AT ALL, or at least discouraged them.

I don't have the ROTS novel, but isn't that basically what Qui-Gon teaches Yoda at the end?

I agree, you are right. the new force view is right, there lies danger in darkness, but you can use it if needed. but if you can do the same thing with good emotions, then prefer to use them instead of anger. the jedi will have to realise this, like jacen did already before them. good point

It seems like the ideal philosophy of the NJO is supposed to be that to be the best that they can be, the Jedi shouldn't necessarily be more inclined to darkness per se, but simply being more human. One point that I agreed with Vergere (yes, I know, the Chicken, so sue me) is how anger is a natural thing and can sometimes be useful in certain circumstances. The OJO was too impersonal and indifferent, more concerned with looking at the big picture. Controlled anger can provoke action that will ultimately solve the problem, even if the anger itself isn't what does the job in the end.

Of course, the problem with this is that most people don't know when to call it quits, and they get carried away. Harnessing your darker emotions as part of your Jedi ways is just like Mace with Vaapad--it takes a true Master who knows what he's doing to handle it properly.

Did it occur to anyone else that Jacen is basically pulling a Bruce Lee in regards to the Force?

Bruce Lee saw the limitations of the style of Kung Fu he was taught, so he studied other martial arts and combat forms and "absorbed what was useful".

The result was Jeet-Kun Do, a combo of Kung-Fu, Western Boxing, and Fencing (iirc)

I could swear Dorsk 81 was still alive and appeared in an NJO novel trying to save a bunch of droids.

    Off to the bookshelf...

I thought that the reason why Luke ended up looking like Palpy in TJK was that he was using his anger and fear to fuel the illusion, and his looking like Palpy was symbolic of the path he and the Jedi were on with this new philosophy. It seems to me that the simple act of what he did, creating the illusion, didn't necessarily need to have that sort of reaction. It sounded a lot like that Fallanassi trick that was pulled at the end of the BFC, and that woman didn't end up looking like a nightsister. Not to mention that Palpatine was mentioned by name when simply a description of Luke's appearance would have sufficed if the allusion wasn't included for a reason.

That having been said, it does seem that if there's enough Force energy used, the Jedi (or whomever) can basically become an overloaded circuit. Even Jacen, when he became one with the Force ostensibly so seamlessly, seemed to age five years immediately afterwards.

I really want to see Luke go crazy. Say Ben gets killed by a Gorog, with Mara captured.

Luke storms through the nest, with bugs foolishly attacking. He is slashing and releasing all of his anger. Nothing stands a chance.

He makes it to Raynar and engages him in a fierce duel. He begins to tire, when Raynar tells him that Mara will be Joined as Raynar did, or perish if she rejects.

Luke loses it and attacks Raynar so fiercly, Raynar is forced to fall back. The duel ends with Luke stabbing Raynar through the heart with his lightsabre.

Luke expects the bugs to go crazy without a leader, but they remain calm. He hears a cold, cruel laugh and turns to see what was once Lomi Plo standing at the opposite end of the room.

She informs him that she was behind the nest, Raynar was a decoy (like Shimmra and Onimi). She engages Luke in a lightsabre duel. While fighting, he senses one of Lomi's minds is elsewhere and suddenly endures unconceivable pain and loss.

    Mara has been killed.

He falls to the floor in anguish, and can't think straight due to grief.

Lomi taunts him, saying how weak he is and how he could ever be the Son of Darth Vader.

Luke slowly begins to simmer with anger as the taunts continue.

Lomi offers him the chance to live, or his remaining family get killed to.

Luke whirls around and sends a bolt of Force lightning at Lomi. It hits her and send her flying across the room (like Dooku to Anakin in AOTC, only much, MUCH more powerful).

She picks herself up and runs at him with her 'saber ignited.

She slashes, but Luke steps inside the attack and lifts her up by the throat. He grabs the lightsabre and shoves it into her stomach and deactivates it.

    It is stuck.

Then, he lifts her up with the Force to the top of the room and unleases more lightning. The lightning finds its way to the lightsabre and the 'sabre explodes, sending Lomi plummeting to the floor.

    Dead.

He stands where he is, contemplating for a long time.

A few hours later, Leia and Han rush into the chambers, having been out-system before the duel. Leia says she felt a tremendous disturbance in the Force.

Luke announces he must destroy the nest, and those who have been Joiners. Including Jaina and the others.

He pulls his cloak over his head and starts off towards the exit, but Han runs up to him and grabs his arm to try and talk sense into him.

Luke responds by picking Han up and throwing him against the far wall.

Leia rushes to Han's side and then glares up at Luke.

She ignites her 'sabre, ready to strike down her brother and save the galaxy from his twisted mind. However, Luke raises his arms and pulls down the ceiling, trapping Leia.

Luke leaves and Leia faces the realisation she may have lost all that remains of the Skywalker line...
