I used to think only farmers and the anti-technology survivalists living in bunkers in the middle of the wilderness do this, not the founder of Facebook

Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg eats only what he kills

When he's not too busy connecting people across the universe, Mark Zuckerberg is pursuing a new "personal challenge," as he calls it. "The only meat I'm eating is from animals I've killed myself," says the Facebook founder and CEO.

It's an odd dietary direction for the 27-year-old Internet billionaire, but since he has taken to killing goats, pigs and chickens, "I'm eating a lot healthier foods. And I've learned a lot about sustainable farming and raising of animals," he says. "It's easy to take the food we eat for granted when we can eat good things every day."

Zuckerberg's new goal came to light, not surprisingly, on Facebook. On May 4, Zuckerberg posted a note to the 847 friends on his private page: "I just killed a pig and a goat."

Wow... so not my thing. If I had to do that I'd probably become a vegetarian.

It's an interesting statement to make but it won't change anything.

I don't see what's so great about killing the animal yourself. An amateur probably does a much worse job of "humanely" slaughtering an animal and, really, it's dead either way. And it's just as "sustainable." Unless he thinks of it as a weird way of scaring him into becoming a vegetarian or vegan, there isn't a point to this except being an eccentric billionaire.

Is he going to become Howard Hughes?

Oh I'm sorry, *we can't all be billionaires and have a sustainable farm where we can kill what we want to eat. Congrats on appreciating what you eat Vinegar Fresh Session.

Suddenly Farmville makes a lot more sense to me now. It's not a game, it's a dietary simulator.

If only this was covered by an east asian news agency that perpetuated their dementedly distorted view of western culture via video game graphics...

I've been wondering if the Mark Zuckerberg version of THE SOCIAL NETWORK was just a bit too out there. Now I see the real thing isn't so far off the mark. Goddam loon....

This is just the first step of geek crazy. Matter of time before we hear about him graduating to killing hookers.

That was my rule when the boys were little and decided that stomping bugs was fun:

"If you kill it, you have to eat it."

    worked like a charm.

I dunno, I don't think it's that big of a deal. If you've seen any of the documentaries about our meat industry, you know it's absolutely disgusting. I've changed only to eating grass fed beef and free range chicken. I'm actually looking into buying meat from a local farmer and storing it. So him having animals and doing it either himself or having someone on his staff who does it seems like a fairly 'non-crazy' thing. If I could keep my own chickens and cows, I'd do the same thing.

I want to carry Kate's babies for her.

I'm not saying it's by any means practical for everyone to kill their own food, but if you can't stomach the thought of killing your own food or watch someone do it for you, you should perhaps reconsider your diet. I don't agree with most hunting, but my mom is always so saddened to see my brothers bring home deer they've shot and I have to remind her how the hamburger she's munching on was treated far, far worse in life than any animal living in the wild.

So, yes, he's eccentric and a bit of a vinegar fresh session for plenty of other reasons, but this I can admire. If he wants to harvest his own meat and treat the animals it comes from with a little respect and he has the ability to make it happen, I don't see why he has to be mocked for it.

I understand vegetarianism and veganism and I understand and agree with many arguments in favor of humane treatment of animals. What I don't understand is the idea that one should be able to "stomach" the slaughtering of their meat. I get it, it's a sentient creature, but there are many, many things people delegate to others in part because they cannot face it themselves. Would you want to work at a sewage treatment plant?

I think a sentient creature's life being taken makes a huge difference, honestly. I'd never work at a sewage plant, but I'd never feel guilty for not treating water myself.

Same with war-mongering politicians. If they wouldn't put their own lives on the line or have their own children serve, they have no business sending other peoples' children off to war.
