Rather a random question but it's something that's bugged me for ages and I figured it's time to try and find an answer.

Has there ever been a male Falleen with normal hair, not done up in a topknot?

My RPG character is Falleen and it's always bugged me. The females usually are written/drawn as having a full head of a hair but the males have that more alien looking face and as far as I know I've only ever seen or read them described as having the single tail of hair.

So, is it a species trait that it only grows out of one spot or just a cultural thing and they just shave the rest? If there isn't a definitive canon answer, does anyone have an opinion on it?

I'm going to say cultural since as you said, females can have a full head of hair (though to my remembering, female Falleen just look like chesty Xizors)

perhaps male-pattern baldness is so widespread among the Falleen that they fashioned this style to avoid patchy green heads.

Out of Universe...it's likely a trait that has been assumed by writers and artist to be a species trait...now this isn't written in stone, but it's another characteristic that differentiates between them and other species. There may be no rule against a Falleen with a full head of hair...but don't expect to see one in EU just because you could.

I don't think there's a canon answer, but others would be better placed to give you a definitive answer.

But while I have no problem with the idea that it's cultural, there's no reason it couldn't be a gender-difference either. I mean, I know it's not typical of humans, but it could be comparable to facial hair differences among humans. And there are some pretty extreme examples of plumage differences between genders in nature.

It is part of a Falleen's repertoire to look attractive to the members of other species. Since the dominant species of the galaxy are humans and human males consider bald females unattractive full-haired Falleen females have an advantage.

Wigs. They're reptiles, they shouldn't be having hair at all.

The Top-Knot hairstyle used on SW characters like Prince Xizor & Aurra Sing are aesthetically pleasing, i.e. they look pretty damn cool, but I don't think anyone's ever tried to explain why they have them. Aurra Sing is still listed as an unidentified species & with the Falleen we've only got Xizor & his sister adding that every other Falleen that they would've known of were killed by Vader.

Falleen didn't immidiately fall into the coolness range of Zabraks like Darth Maul, spawning tons of examples of his species in the SWU all with a variety of hairstyles or lack thereof, horn styles & skin colors.

Anyways, I like the whole concept of Falleen & really wish they'd get used more in the EU. For the crazists reasons I'm re-reading the Bounty Hunter Wars right now, Xizor is awesome in there!

So why don't Twi'lek females wear wigs? O:)

Does you hypothesis work the other way though? Do chicks dig the shiny dome with a lonely pony tail?

Could the male falleen grow out the pony and then do a Donald Trump comb-over?

I think Falleen pheromones are more advantageous then the hair on the head. I think hair has more to do with Style then Sex appeal, but it's not out of the realm of practical use as such.

Here on Earth, the line between mammals and reptiles wasn't always that clear cut. It's not hard to imagine that on thousands and thousands of diverse worlds, things would end up differently.
