Too bad the thread I wanted to post this in has been closed. There was just this I had to say on the general topic of fan edits. I find the topic as such interesting and thought I could hear some more opinions on it. We don't have to limit this to TPM but can share general opinions on whether those fan edits are a good thing or not. It seems they are pretty popular among some fans. I myself have never watched one nor am I planning to. I prefer to watch a work of art the way the artist intended. Thoughts?
Well, I was only repeating what another user wrote, assuming he had valid sources for his statement. But even if it's not actually illegal to butcher a movie and release your own version - without the artist's approval - to the public, practically for every single viewer worldwide to watch, for profit or not, to me it's just not a legitimate act. We are not talking about a few friends getting together at home and have some fun with their homemade movies, we are talking about a worldwide publication of another person's work, in a form not intended by that person. For all I know, more people may even watch those fan edits than the original work approved by the creators, simply because those are more easily accessible than the real thing.
Now I'm not a lawyer or anything, but in my opinion cutting a movie in any way you like without authorization, and make that version available to the general public, is a much worse copyright infringement than some guy downloading a song for private use. But maybe that's just me...
    My opinion exactly!

I don't think anyone has the right to share a fan edit though. Unless you are talking to people who have been to your home and seen your fan edit then it's like asking people for their opinion on how the inside of your own eyelids looks to them.

It's only if you ignore the illegality that the discussion can really take place. Otherwise one can simply discuss the pros and cons of the movie itself, in part or in whole. And for which there are several threads which cover the topic, without the need to refer to an extant re-edit of the film or films.

The justifiable policy of the admins does not prevent discussion of the movies which could be manifest in a fan's re-edit without the need to promote the grey areas of copyright infringement.

I agree. I have no problem with people editing their own DVDs, songs or whatever for private use. But in this case they publish their products, on a website that has a vast number of viewers worldwide. Some of them may not even know which version is the official one and which fake. If I make a home movie but use material from existing movies without permission, and show that in public, I'm pretty sure I'd be in trouble really fast. Same as with a movie theater owner cutting scenes from a movie to make it shorter without permission, I'd feel cheated as a viewer. Do whatever you want with your private movie or music collection, but don't make it look like or trick viewers into thinking those versions are equal or even superior to the official versions. It's not really a matter of making a profit or not. It's taking a work of art, changing it without approval of the artist, and then "selling" it as the real thing. It's cheating, no matter what. If you think you can do better than the filmmaker you are free to make your own movie. But leave others' products alone. It's totally different when the artist himself makes changes to his own work, though some people may not like it.

Personally, I love them. I have a lot of them and love to trade. I'm sure I'll get flack for that (I usually do), but it's true.

Depends on the fan edit sampling.
    Grandmaster Flash = fresh yo
    Vanilla Ice = thanks no

Just cutting up an existing movie and maybe throwing in a deleted scene isn't all that creative. But taking the time to incorporate new scenes that allow a larger or even different view of other scenes is great. Even if they don't have the technical experience to create their own scenes (CGI or properly filmed), I'd even appreciate stick figure drawings with voice overs. The creativity is what captures my attention. Not a cool star wipe that adds nothing (or even distracts) to the original.
