My choices for best death scene 1. Solo TFA 2.Yoda ROTJ 3. Obi wan ANH 4. Vader ROTJ 5. Jyn snd Cassian RO 6. Palps ROS 7. Leia ROS 8. Luke TLJ 9. Chirrut R0 10.Dooku ROTS 11.Qui Gon TPM 12.Ozzil ESB Honourable mentions.. Jango Fett Ki adi mundi Nute Gunray.. Very nearly in top Darth maul (rebels) Admiral Pryde Beckett Biggs Red Leader Rebel who vader kills through door in R0 Dissapointing.. Jabba, shmi,
Obi-Wan's death in ANH has always been very moving to me just because of how calm and at peace he is when he knows he is about to be killed by Vader. "If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine." Deep words that would only come from someone very spiritually wise. Vader's death in ROTJ when he wants Luke to remove his mask so he can look on his son's face with his own eyes just once is very heart-breaking to watch. Qui-Gon's death in TPM always makes tears come to my eyes. The way Obi-Wan cradles him and weeps. The way he reaches out to touch Obi-Wan's face in unspoken affection. How he asks Obi-Wan to promise to train Anakin, and how determined Obi-Wan is to fulfill that promise. Jyn and Cassian's death in Rogue One is also impossible for me to watch with dry eyes.
Kanan in Rebels is my personal favourite. I honestly start sobbing uncontrollably every single time. Qui Gon in TPM. It was sad anyway, especially seeing obi wan cradle him, but now having watched the rest of the saga countless times it becomes all the more sad as we know he would have been a great mentor for Anakin Maul in Rebels. There’s just something so tragic about this. He’s wasted years of his life hunting for revenge, been cast aside by the sith, killed by the Jedi he has been wanting to get revenge on for so long. While those last words about ‘he will avenge us’ show that him and Kenobi have something in common, they have both been played by a Sith Lord and they were just tiny parts of the grand plan. Vader RotJ. Just great seeing the mask come off, the music is brilliant Ki Adi Mundi ROTS. I don’t even particularly like Ki Adi Mundi, but when the order 66 score starts playing and you see him look back at his troops..it just really hits you how this is the end of the Jedi order
1. Anakin's Death in ROTJ: Mostly thanks to the PT. Seeing Luke light Vader's armor is a cathartic goodbye to such a tragic and dynamic character. And to see the ghost of Anakin (for me, Hayden Christensen) give one last look at his son in the Saga never stops to hit me in the feels. 2. Qui-Gon's Death in TPM The tension leading up to it is scary. Seeing the helplessness on Obi-Wan's face as he watches his master tire out. Ewan McGregor's "Nooo!" is the best of the saga. And the cradling of his body by Obi-Wan just adds a level of despair to a otherwise light-hearted film. 3. Padme's Death in ROTS God, this one gets me emotionally wrecked everytime I see it. The last breath combined with Vader's first and the moment she dies, the baby (not sure which one it is), cries in Obi-Wan's arms and Obi-Wan looks devastated. Then the beautiful shot of Naboo's people mourning her as her casket is carried through the street. The final shot of the japor snippet is incredible filmmaking. 4. Jango Fett's Death in AOTC Just brutal. Mace charges Jango making a last stand only to get his blaster and head sliced clean off. The gratuitous shot of Jango's headless body slumping over is quite graphic for a PG film. 5. Ki-Adi Mundi in ROTS Even with prosthetics, Silas Carson does this moment perfectly. Anakin's Betrayal playing with Ki running down the bridge, urging his troops to push forward only for the clones to slow down. The look of shock and confusion on Ki-Adi's face and the noise he makes when he gets shot is heartwrenching. At least he killed one Galactic Marine before dying. 6. Anakin's "Death" in ROTS The most emotional moment in the saga. Anakin, screaming in anguish as he tries to keep himself from sliding too low into the lava. The transition of Anakin's blue eyes turning yellow. Obi-Wan's passionate "You were the Chosen One!" monologue topped off by Obi-Wan's anger and guilt and his questioning of why Anakin would join the Sith and do so much evil.
Best Ranked: 1. Yoda - ROTJ 2. Anakin/Vader - ROTJ 3. Padme - ROTS 4. Admiral Holdo - TLJ 5. Han Solo - TFA Worst Ranked: 1. Leai Organa - TROS (horribly done) 2. Ben Solo - TROS (horribly exectued) 3. Boba Fett - ROTJ (LOL) 4. Kit Fisto - ROTS (WEAK SAUCE) 5. Palpatine - TROS (just dumb)
1. Shmi Skywalker (Attack of the Clones) 2. Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor (Rogue One) 3. Mace Windu (Revenge of the Sith) 4. Palpatine (Return of the Jedi) 5. Anakin Skywalker (Return of the Jedi)
TLJ made $1.3B and TROS made $1.1B. There still plenty of fans, your just hanging out in the wrong areas. Were you not around when the prequels came out lol, it was even worse. Clouded by darkness you are.
We get the point about the so-called "Death of Fandom" but the thread topic is "fave-death scenes". Stay on topic please. @anakinfansince1983 @cubman987
I am super sure I forgot some death, but all in all this is my list of the most emotional (touching/sad/satisfying/peaceful) deaths in the Star Wars Saga. 01. ANAKIN SKYWALKER (ROTJ) For me the most touching death in SW history. Captured in pain and darkness, he chosed to sacrifice himself to save his son's life and to free the enslaved galaxy from the inperial tyranny - just as he dreamed of as a little boy. 02. PADMÉ AMIDALA (ROTS) Without words. To see this young, strong woman die of a broken heart is soooo sad. The montage with Vader and later the funeral.....oh my gosh. No mother should die on the birth of her child(ren). What a tragic end. 03. KI-ADI MUNDI (ROTS) To see the disappointment and especially surprise on his face in combination with the music still gives me a tear to my eyes. So representive for the order 66. 04. HAN SOLO (TFA) The enlightment, the acting, the tension - wow!!! In cinema this death kicked me like a train. Soo cruel and sad. 05. QUI-GON JINN (TPM) My stomach still crunches when Maul drills his red saber through Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan shouts out his big emotions. Early goodbye to a wise jedi master. 06. SHEEV PALPATINE (ROTJ) Anakin kills his dark master to save his son. So satisfying to see Sidious' face after Vader's betrayal. Nicely filmed also. 07. SHEEV PALPATINE (TROS) What a satisfying moment when all the jedi reflected the sith's anger and Sidious finally swallowed his own “medicine“ to the last drop! Goosebumps! 08. BEN SOLO (TROS) The last Skywalker, manipulated by Palpatine aswell, sacrifices himself to bring Rey back to life. Really, really touching to me - even though I know that his character had to “pay“ for his sins. 09. SHMI SKYWALKER (AOTC) Very emotional, sad death in the arms of her son after long, major pain. Anakin's eyes after her passing by tell the spectator of Shmi's meaning to Anakin. 09. MACE WINDU (ROTS) I always liked him. He had his idea of solving things, like in the chancellor's chamber. For me his death feels like the “end's beginning“. 10. YODA (ROTJ) What an emotional, calm death in the lonely swamps of Dagobah. One of the most iconic characters in the saga falls asleep forever after telling Luke some last, meaningful words. 11. OBI-WAN KENOBI (ANH) A mature 'Bye' to an old, beloved character. It was expectable and sort of a “clever sacrifice“ but in general it still makes me a bit sad. 12. LUKE SKYWALKER (TLJ) In the beginning a very disappointing death to me. But later I learned to find it peaceful and inspiring to the whole galaxy. Episode IX upgraded this scene. 13. LEIA ORGANA-SOLO (TROS) Maybe not the very best executed death in SW history but for me the setting really worked and mirrored the death/(re)birth scene in Episode III in an interesting way. Also respect for the use of the Leia footage - well done. 14. GIAL ACKBAR (TLJ) Off-Screen-Farewell to this fan-favourite. Sad, realistic, in the face. 15. WILHUFF TARKIN (ANH) Stunning editing and use of music when Death Star One was destroyed and we saw this glimpse shot of the proud, evil, tacticing Tarkin short before this gigantic battle station exploded into a thousand pieces. 16. OWEN & BERU LARS (ANH) A horrible scene! Even though they were just introduced as “farmer adoptive parents“ for Luke, this was pretty tough to see - not only for young Luke. 17. BIGGS DARKLIGHTER (ANH) Luke could not even reflect on his best friend's death....very brief but sad. 18. JANGO FETT (AOTC) I think his violent death shocked me a bit because we were introduced in the strong father-“son“-relationship. 19. COUNT DOOKU (ROTS) Less people have mercy with the villains but I really felt with him; look at his confused eyes short before his decapitation. 20. PAIGE TICO (TLJ) She was a big fighter with heart. Good that she made it to get the “red button“ to bring this mission to an end. 21. PLO KOON (ROTS) Just a guy I randomly always liked. Cool design. I hate spaceship-deaths; they feel so quick, horrible and unpersonal. 22. JABBA THE HUTT (ROTJ) To see this criminal coloss of an alien getting choked to death was satisfying and great acting by Carrie Fisher. 23. GENERAL GRIEVOUS (ROTS) Reminded me of how vulnerable even the dangeroust battle cyborg can be. Simple but ironic death. 24. LOR SAN TEKKA (TFA) So much dark energy in this kill of an unarmed, old man. 25. GREEDO (ANH) Iconic, western-style death in the 1977-beginning of this big ride.
This is actually tougher to answer than I thought. I can't say the deaths of the characters are favorites, so to speak, but more along the lines of those that impacted me the most. There are some that were executed well. Some executed poorly. Some more touching and tragic than others. Leia's passing was made that much more heartfelt and tragic know that Carrie Fisher had passed in real life. Her death in Rise of Skywalker was executed about as well as it could have been under the circumstances, and it has me in tears every time I see it. It felt like a chance for all of us fans to be able to say good bye to Carrie. Luke's death was befitting of a Jedi, and a legend. Sacrificing one's self in an attempt to save the masses. Han's death was hard for me, as his showed his true colors as a person. Showed Han truly cared despite the gruff exterior, and truly just wanted his family back. Wanted the ones he loved together again. Chirrut Imwe's and Baze Malbus' deaths had me tearing up in the theater. Their deaths were also very fitting for their characters. Jedi-esque heroic actions from one so wholeheartedly devoted to his belief in the force, and one so devoted to his belief in their friendship that it restored his faith in the force. Vader/Anakin;s death was always bittersweet for me. Anakin's redemption by sacrificing himself to save his children, directly and indirectly, is very touching. The atrocities committed by Vader kind of wipe some of the redemption away. I don't mean to make it sounds like I'm putting a price on Anakin's redemption, but it always kind of felt to me that Vader got off a little too easily to be redeemed. Kit Fisto's, Agen Kolar's, and Seasee Tin's deaths were horribly executed. Made all three of them inept just so they could make Palps look powerful. Their deaths have always irked me. I wasn't happy with Padme's death. The whole scenario, to me, felt forced and contrived. The dialog on the landing platform on Mustafar was so over the top it felt as if they were trying to force the emotion into the scene instead of letting it happen naturally. And her losing the will to live felt overly contrived. Yes, I am fully aware this is common place among old couples when their lifelong spouse passes on, they cannot go on alone and pass shortly after. I am not attempting to discount that it is possible, but it was a little too much for their relationship to have progressed to that point that Padme would lose the will to live after Anakin turned. Obi-Wan's death was a happy death. I don't mean in that I was happy to see him pass, but his death had purpose and meaning. Not only did he maintain living up to the Jedi code and sacrificed himself so Han, Luke, and Leia could escape, but his death was the moment that set Luke upon his journey through the force. Obi-Wan's death also feels like a dig at Vader in that he was able to take away some level of Vader's revenge by allowing himself to by struck down. Qui-Gon's death was done well. Heroic death for an admired mentor. It always felt a bit on the cheesy side for him to stay alive long enough for Obi-Wan to be able to hold him in his arms, but otherwise well down. Quite impactful, as well. We see how much Qui-Gon meant to Obi-Wan in some of Obi-Wan's actions and comments in later movies. Maul's death was cheap and unfulfilling. The Twin Suns episode of Rebels should have been an examination of the hatred Maul still harbored for Obi-Wan. We should have gotten Maul struggling through the Tatooine desert searching for Obi-Wan, driven by his blind hatred and lust for revenge. This could have been a phenomenal exposition on everything that was driving Maul, and making him tick, at that point in his life. Instead, we got Ezra jacking off in the desert for 20 minutes. Completely deflated what could have, and really should have, been one of the most poignant moments in Star Wars history.
1: Anakin (ROTS): Yes I’m cheating by using Obi-Wans “certain point of view” bull, but the Immolation Scene is the most moving scene in the saga for me. “You were the chosen one!” 2: Jyn/Cassian. Between the visuals, score, and the characters’ stoic acceptance of their fate, easily one of the most beautiful scenes in the saga. Hit me hard when I saw it in the theaters 3: Han Solo. The tense buildup, betrayal, and final “forgiveness touch” were perfectly executed. The cinematography of that scene was outstanding as well
Love these for all the reasons you listed. I'm adding Shmi Skywalker to this list. For me, the entire emotional reunion of Anakin and Shmi was heartbreaking but then Hayden's facial expressions running the gamut of everything he feels from moment to moment is just perfect. The soundtrack build up behind the scene gives me goosebumps.
Palpatine ROTJ Dooku ROTS Mace ROTS Qui-Gon TPM Order 66 ROTS I didn’t think of Shmi, but I agree that that scene was powerful and raw with emotion. I feel that was Anakin’s biggest turning point, but obviously not his last.
Shmi's death is another one that never sat well with me. Like Qui-Gon's death, hanging on long enough to die in someone's arms is cheesy, and generally contrived story telling. This is not to say her death wasn't meaningful, but it lost it's impact by having her stay awake long enough for Anakin to get there, then suddenly dying. As a result, this makes any action taken by Anakin again the Tusken Raiders reactionary, and sets up as if it's looking for a way to make people sympathetic of Anakin in spite of his slaughtering the sand people. Being done this way also takes away from the impact of what should be the first major step in Anakin's turn, especially considering the whole moment is dropped so Anakin can chase Padme with a Force boner. I think Shmi's death would have been better had she already died by the time Anakin and Padme got to Tatooine. It would have been just as tragic, and just as meaningful, but now any action Anakin takes is no longer reactionary. Anakin going to slaughter the sand people now becomes premeditated. It removes the sympathetic angle, other than in his losing his mother, and shows a strong draw towards the Dark side, and truly impacts itself as his first big steps in becoming Vader. Anakin's line, "I'm a Jedi. I know I'm better than this." now carries far more weight to his inner struggle between good and evil. As the movie is written, that line falls flat, and carries little weight because there is sympathy and a justification for Anakin's actions.
Darth Vader "Nothing can stop that now, just for once let me look at you with my own eyes" "You all ready have Luke, you were right, you were right about me, tell your sister, you were right." Always gets me in the feels like no other character. Kanan Jarrus (or Caleb Dume) would be the next one. His buildup from a scared runaway padawan to a legit powerful Jedi Knight was satisfying to watch. Then for him to die for his family and yet still find peace and his sight again was an incredible melancholic watch for me. The last thing that he sees being Hera, the love of his life, is what really makes even sadder.
