Who is your favorite Sith lord from either cannon or Legends and why? While Darth Vader will probably always be my favorite, I've begun reading the Darth Bane trilogy which has sparked an interest in some of the ancient Sith lords of the old EU.
I mean he plotted behind the scenes and took over the galaxy and was basically in control of the whole course of events throughout most of I to VI. Vader by comparison whilst an interesting charecter was never more than an underling. As someone once put it, power corrupts, absolute power is kinda neat.
Palps is a cool villain, the conniving, the two-facedness, the weird hammy villain shtick. But he isn't much of a character. One could argue the interest in his character depends mostly on Anakin / Vader's story and the roles he serves in it. Also that underling killed him by grabbing him and tossing him away into an abyss. Absolute power? Eh, not so much.
Sidious/Palpatine. that is not true in my case. In fact Palpatine is far more interesting without the whole Vader stuff. has any villain really had a jaw dropping death? I can't recall any.
While I really adore Palpatine, with his both his intelligent planning and the payoff of letting him go full ham as a cackling despot, there's really only one Sith Lord I can choose: Be it his striking appearance and dynamic fighting style, his overcoming of the odds, his strict adherence to a hierarchical worldview even after abandoning his master, his legitimately convincing arguments at times without losing his utter black-heartedness, Maul's gotta be my pick. I really admire how he works both as a silent menace and a Machiavellian schemer (though always on a smaller scale than Sidious). He may just be my number one favourite Star Wars character overall thanks to Clone Wars and Rebels layering such nuance and trusting the audience to view him as an anti-villain protagonist.
Well, I'm not speaking for everyone. But Anakin/Vader is pretty much the reason he's even in the story as much as he is. Point wasn't having a "jaw-dropping death", it was that Palps obviously didn't have "absolute power" like another poster said. Because yeah, Palpatine's death was especially lame.
I’m gonna go with Vader. Yes, the armor is mesmerizing and it’s hard to not be immediately drawn to his presence when on-screen, BUT the combination of his tragic, sprawling, and complex backstory as Anakin Skywalker, his final redemption with the beautiful imagery of a funeral pyre under the fireworks of a night sky, and the sheer disturbing complexion and corruption even a pre-suit Vader portrays is what makes him so unique.
I couldn't have said it better. I do love the Bane trilogy and it would be really cool to see him in live action.
Darth Marr is my pick. He was the only sensible one on The Dark Council aside from Lord Malgus, and he had the wisdom to embrace the Jedi maxim, “There is No Death, There is The Force,” and became a Force Ghost and good friend of Jedi Master Satale Shan. To me he is the wisest Sith because he was not blindly dogmatic, he embraced Truth, even if it came from The Jedi Code.
Sheev Dude upended a thousand-year long status-quo, and reshaped the entire galaxy in his own image. The best part of the PT is the way he manipulates those around him.
Darth Plagueis. Besides the meme, the way he was able to manipulate power players at every level of the galaxy's business and political spectrums was absolutely incredible to see in the Plagueis novel. And he was evil, but he wasn't completely sadistic like Sidious was. Every so often he makes a point where I find myself nodding and going, "huh, he's not entirely wrong." Of course he usually ruins it by doing something Sithy later, but what a complex and fascinating character. As much as I enjoy Sidious, I honestly would have rather seen Damask as Chancellor and chief adversary of the Jedi instead.
It's a two way tie between Darth Vader and Darth Bane for me. Vader is my favourite fictional character, and the only reason he isn't a clear #1 is because a lot of why I love his character is because of who he was during the Clone Wars and because of his ultimate redemption. In other words, the Jedi part of him. The Sith part is also awesome, but so is Bane's studious quest to reform the Sith into the Banite Sith we see in the movies. One way of looking at it is Vader is the best Sith on the screen. With his intimidating presence, his mask and armour, and James Earl Jones' iconic voice, he is pure cinematic magic. Bane is the best Sith on the page. His delving into ancient Sith lore and his philosophical development works wonderfully in a book.
Would the Inquisitors be considered Sith? I liked the arc of the Grand Inquisitor and his being redeemed in the temple. Otherwise, nothing beats Darth Vader done well. Certainly not Palpatine, he's always cackling like a deranged muppet.
Been thinking on this for a couple of days, and I reckon my answer depends on the criteria. Maul is my favourite to watch (striking visual appearance, spectacular fighter, etc.) and I love how he's brought to life by an amalgamation of multiple talents... but then there's Sidious, who has the most interesting and wide-ranging impact on story and character with all of his scheming, and who is perfectly portrayed by Ian McDiarmid right the way through the saga. Funnily enough, I never once considered Vader, despite the fact that Anakin is one of my top three Star Wars characters. I think that, as a Sith Lord, Vader comes with too much baggage to judge alongside the others, and so my brain must've disqualified him. So yeah, from a visceral / visual perspective, I'd say Maul. From a character / plot perspective, it's Sidious.
Vader is the undisputed sith lord. His black helmet, the voice and the breathing are the great things that gives me goosebumps while thinking about Sith lords. Yep! The one and only
it's like he's inspecting the precision of storm trooper fire. "Yup....and yup....you actually hit them this time, they are indeed dead and not pretending, I'm impressed"
David Prowse didn't get enough credit for his physical acting ability. The body language there is most impressive.
