You could just do it all in post, for certain kinds of hits and ricochets this could be relatively easy even for a beginner, with a program like AfterEffects. Or, you could just do physical effects--make some small--VERY SMALL--charges, and set up a nail box.

Shadow - that's a great way to ruin your paintball gun. Paintball gun barrels are bored to a very specific diameter, just large enough to accept a spherical paintball. Unless you know of chalk that comes in smooth balls the exact size of a paintball, you're out of luck. Besides, chalk could damage the barrel, which is designed to have soft paintballs slide through its length.

A much better, cheaper, and safer alternative is to use a slingshot. Then you don't have to worry about the size or shape of the chalk.

well the one look im really going for is the dirt flying up trick, I want to have the effect of bullets hitting the dirt and little peices of dirt flys in the air you know like that spot os where the bullet hit it.

I don't intend to use a paintball gun probably either cause i know that won't work and you can see the paintball anyways.

If you are having somebody run away while they are being shot at, there is a very simple and effective way to make dirt "pop" up...

Simply bury or put some pieces of wood on the ground, with a very small fulcrum in the middle. Put dirt on one end, and have your actor step on the other end as he runs by. Multiply as needed, and you could even have other people doing it as well off to the sides, and edit them out in post.

    Presto!

ummm i think that he would be using a far smaller caliber weapon by comparison

good if you using guns (guns are acctuly big bloody things) not so good for simulationg a rifle or pistol shot

i would do it in post of you can get those party poper things fill with dirt and sit it on the ground have a guy pull the sting and edit him out

Indy, thats what I wanted to suggest. On the making of DVD of Saving Private Ryan, Steven Spielberg explains how he made his first war movie with a bunch of friends in the desert, when he was 16. He did it exactly like you said.

You could use a program like Blender and simulate particles. Then you could overlay it and position it.

I would advise AGAINST using this on your actors though. And only do this if you think you can handle it.

Well, if you're talking squibs, there's always the Insecticide-pump squib. Just fill a short length of tube with debris (Or blood) and pump up the tube. Let the pressure go, and BAM! Pyro-less explosion of debris or gore.

or of course you could always use fireworks like you said. Every package of firecrackers have one with an extra long, non cloth fuse. Those take about 3 seconds or maybe a little more to go through. If you bury it a little bit and time it just right it'll look great.

But it'll prolly take a lot of takes to time just right, and since there's only one usable firecracker per twelve, it'll take a lot of packs of 'crackers.
