    Even though they both got blown up, the first Death Star seemed to be a lot better built than the second Death Star. The first Death Star had that trench with all the guns, and only a one manned ship could get close enough to destroy it. The second Death Star had that huge unprotected core that two big ships could get to and easily blow up. There was the shield, but suppose the Death Star needed to move and there wasn't a shield...Sure it was unfinished, but it looked to me like the center was completed and only that one chunk up top needed to be finished. Heck, they could have at least installed a shield generator near the core to protect it from hostile fire.

    ...I guess they don't build Death Stars like they used to...

    The second Death Star still had plenty of guns on the surface, but the lousy contractors never bothered to seal their construction tunnels even though a battle was coming up (No wonder the professors in my school hate contractors).
    In a battle, the second Death Star would win because it can charge its superlaser faster than the first one. I think it can also move faster.

    The Death Star wasn't done yet. The only reason there were shafts large enough to fly ships through was because maintenance still needed to be done inside.

    Once it was finished, it would have been practically invulnerable.

    also you must understand that the second death star wasnt finsihed (as already stated above i belive) so it would be easy to siege a castle that had no moat or front door but sill a trebuchet.

    IMO the second deathe star was better even unfinished. And as Luke stated. "your overconfidence is your weakness" or something to that nature. The second got desytryoed because of the pride of the empire.

    The entire point of the second Death Star was to be a trap - to start building it, allow the Alliance to know its location, lure them into thinking it was vulnerable, not operational, and get them to mount a full-scale attack on it. Then you sic the Imperial fleet on them, and the operational superlaser, and you wipe out the entire Alliance in one shot.

    I agree. You're slipping, Bib. 8-}

    Actually, an argument could be made that the second Death Star was meant to "show up" the Imperial Fleet, as they "only had to keep them (Rebels) from escaping."

    The Second Death Star was 50% larger than the first and the design flaws(i.e. exhaust port big enough to shoot a torp through, long superlaser recharge time, poor superlaser aim) were fixed, IIRC. The initial purpose of the DSII was to lure the Rebels into a trap, though Palps would've used it as a terror weapon after defeating the Rebels at Endor. Had the Death Star II been completed, the only way to destroy it would have been to shoot it until its shields collapsed(which would take a long time) then bombard its surface until its basically reduced to a giant piece of metal; of course, the Death Star II wouldn't have gone quietly, and it probably could've inflicted massive damage upon an attacking armada before being destroyed itself.

    With the shield up, the only way to destroy the DSII was with another superlaser.
    It'd be funny if instead of sending a strike team to disable the shield, Rebel engineers tried to build a superlaser of their own.

    Didn't they say DSII was larger and more powerful?

    One thing that bothers me about the DS II is that we see so little of it! I think there were only two interior sets built for it -- the Emperor's throne room and the hangar bay. Everything else is either outtakes from ANH or another ROTJ set doing double-duty.

    Yeah, I always thought it was lame to the extreme that the EXACT same shots of the Death Star gunner crew were re-used for ROTJ. Would it have killed them to put some helmets on some guys and show them pushing buttons from different angles?

    By the time the 2nd Death Star was complete, it would have been much more powerful.
